Chapter 72: Chapter 71: Preston U18 Vs Tranmere U18 II

(Jamie POV)

Mercer’s finger was still on the right side of the board.

The half-time room was hot and close. Shirts stuck to backs, and boys were drinking water too fast, half of it running down their chins. Callum sat breathing through his mouth, hands on his knees. Noah leaned forward with his elbows on his thighs, listening.

Jamie stood near the front, close enough to see the marker line Mercer had drawn down Tranmere’s right.

"We’re not changing much," Mercer said. "We’re fixing the timing."

He tapped the middle of the board first.

"Shaw’s still living here, between our lines. That has to stop. Someone’s touch-tight the second it goes in, every time, no excuses." Then he dragged his finger to the right. "But this is our way in. We nearly scored off it before the break."

He drew it as he spoke.

"When we win it and Noah can find this side early, Finn pins Bennett. Holds him. When Finn pins him, Jamie goes outside. And when Jamie goes," he looked around the room, not just at Jamie, "Noah slides across so the space isn’t empty. All three, or none of it."

Jamie took it in and said nothing.

He was not being asked to win the match. He was being handed one job inside a bigger machine, and the machine only worked if everyone moved together. Preston had already shown they could punish a single loose gap.

They went back out with the plan and not a speech.

Boots knocked on the concrete of the tunnel. Boys pulled their shirts straight and rolled their necks. At the doorway Mercer caught Finn and said one last thing, quiet, "Pin him, don’t drift," and then the noise of the ground came back as they stepped out into it.

Preston were already waiting, and they did not look rattled.

Riley Shaw was talking to Harvey Cole, low, the two of them nodding. And Archie Bennett was pointing across at Tranmere’s right, at the space where Jamie had hurt them before the break, telling his side to watch it.

They had seen the same thing Mercer had. Jamie noticed it and filed it.

Preston started the second half smarter, not softer.

Kieran Doyle held a few yards deeper now whenever Tranmere had the ball, ready to run back with Jamie instead of standing high. Archie Bennett stopped throwing himself forward on every overlap. And Harvey Cole kept dropping in beside his centre-backs to take the ball and slow everything down, killing any momentum before it built.

It was clever. They had a lead, and they were making Tranmere work for every yard of the pitch.

For the first few minutes, Tranmere were better, but they did not take over.

Noah started asking for the ball earlier, getting on it before the press could set. Callum threw himself at Preston’s centre-back the second he received, snapping at his heels. And up top, the striker finally started holding Lucas Hartley off with his body instead of chasing lost causes on his own.

Jamie got one early sight of a run.

Finn had it wide, and Jamie pushed up outside him, calling for it. But Kieran had tracked back exactly as Preston planned, and the passing lane closed before Finn could play it.

Jamie pulled up, checked his run, and dropped back into his position without forcing it.

Not yet. The plan needed the whole thing to line up, and it had not lined up.

The match ran back through the middle, and Preston reminded everyone why they were second.

Harvey Cole dropped between Fielding and Hartley, took the ball, and turned away from Callum’s press with one smooth touch like Callum was not even there.

He fed it into Riley Shaw.

Tranmere’s midfield got to him quicker this time, a body closing from each side. But Shaw was too good, and he still wriggled one clean turn out of it and slid Isaac Monroe into the box.

Jamie’s heart lurched.

Mason read it just in time. He stepped across the striker and threw a leg in the way.

THUD.

The block sent it looping up and behind for a corner, and Jamie let a breath go he had not known he was holding.

He saw the cost of it written all over his teammates.

The centre-backs were gesturing at the midfield, telling them to stay connected. Noah was shouting the same, waving them back into a tighter block. Mercer clapped once, sharp, and cupped his hands, telling them not to drop too deep and invite it all on themselves.

Jamie’s thought was not dramatic. It was just true.

If Shaw kept turning like that, the right-side plan would not matter. Preston would kill the match before Tranmere ever got to use it.

Tranmere’s first proper response came from playing out, not hoofing it.

The keeper rolled it short to Mason. Mason waited a beat, drew a Preston man, then found Noah under pressure. Noah took one touch away from Jude Whitaker’s lunge, half-turning out of it, and suddenly Tranmere had escaped the first wave.

Noah looked right, early, the way Mercer wanted.

Finn stayed wide and pinned Archie Bennett to the line. Jamie started his overlap.

But the pass came half a second late.

That half-second was everything. Archie recovered, got his body across, and blocked the cross out for a throw before Jamie could get his head up.

So close to right. Not quite right.

Mercer did not lose his head on the touchline. He pointed, quick and sharp, at Noah and then at Finn.

He mimed it. Earlier pass. Wider pin. Runner going outside.

Jamie only caught pieces of it over the noise, but he understood enough. The move was there. Everyone could see it now. The timing was the only thing between them and a chance.

Then Preston went straight at the space Jamie’s runs left behind.

Tranmere lost it cheaply near the right corner, and Harvey Cole picked up the loose clearance and switched it fast, out toward Kieran on the left before Jamie had fully recovered.

Jamie turned and ran.

Kieran was already moving, and Jamie’s legs had to eat the gap from a standing start. He got close, close enough to lean on him and slow him, but not close enough to win it clean.

Kieran cut inside off him and laid it square to Riley Shaw at the edge of the box.

THWACK.

Shaw’s shot bent up and just over the bar, and the away lads all breathed at once.

Jamie put his hands on his hips.

His forward runs were useful. But every one of them cost something, and Preston were smart enough to charge him for it.
