Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Too Much White
Rosalind’s white tail gave a sharp, amused flick at his suggestion.
She looked at him for a quiet moment, her chin still resting in her palm, before a soft chuckle vibrated in her throat.
"A walk to digest your food?" she purred, pushing herself up from the couch with effortless grace.
"Very well. If my little monster wants to inspect his house, I suppose I can play the guide. Just don’t blame me if you get lost, this estate was built to survive sieges, not just look pretty."
As she stood, Azriel’s eyes instinctively traced the long, toned lines of her legs, accentuated by the casual black shorts.
Rosalind noticed his lingering gaze and offered him a smug, knowing smirk, but she didn’t call him out on it.
Instead, she wiped the tiny smudge of powdered sugar from her lip with the back of her hand and gestured toward the grand double doors.
Stepping out of her private sitting room, the sprawling scale of the Bastet Matriarchal Estate truly began to hit him.
Rosalind let out a soft, amused hum, unfolding her long legs from the sofa.
"A tour it is. But try to keep up, Azriel. I won’t have you getting lost in my corridors and causing a security panic."
As they stepped out of the private sitting room, Azriel finally had the chance to truly observe the architecture of the estate.
The design philosophy of the mansion was stark, elegant, and borderline minimalist.
The walls, ceilings, and floors were made of a pristine, pure white stone that seemed to catch and softly reflect the ambient magical light.
There were no gaudy golden ornaments or colorful tapestries. Instead, the entire structure was stylized with razor-sharp, ink-black accent lines tracing exclusively along the edges, pillars, and corners.
These subtle black borders served a singular, brilliant purpose, they perfectly defined the boundaries of the stark space, giving the massive halls a hyper-stylized, crisp, and high-end aesthetic.
They strolled through the grand corridors, passing the training hall entrance and the reinforced library doors that Azriel had frequented over the past two days.
From there, Rosalind led him through the upper residential wings, past silent guest quarters, and across vast indoor balconies overlooking manicured courtyard gardens below.
Eventually, she stopped before a set of massive double doors and pushed them open.
"And this," she said, stepping inside, "is where the actual work gets done."
It was her private office.
True to the rest of the estate, the room was a masterpiece of pure white stone, bounded tightly by those same distinct, sharp black accent lines that defined the room’s geometry.
In the center sat a colossal, pristine white executive desk, completely devoid of clutter except for a few neat stacks of documents.
Azriel slowly walked into the room, his violet eyes sweeping over the immaculate, colorless environment.
He turned to her with a dry, teasing smirk.
"You know, Rose... I noticed it before, but looking at this room, it’s undeniable. Are you, or your entire clan for that matter, just completely obsessed with the color white? It’s like living inside a cloud."
Rosalind walked over to the desk, running her fingers along the edge. She smiled faintly, her feline ears shifting back.
"It isn’t an obsession, Azriel. White is the ultimate form of our clan. It represents the literal progress of the people of Bastet."
"Progress?" Azriel tilted his head, genuinely curious.
"Yes. Every member of our lineage is born with pitch-black hair and matching traits," Rosalind explained, gesturing to her own features.
"But as our Aether core matures and we progress through the stages of cultivation and power, our hair begins to turn white from the roots upward. The purer the white, the more profound the cultivation baseline."
Azriel’s gaze immediately locked onto her long, cascading silver-white hair, which was so blindingly pure it practically glowed.
Then, his eyes drifted to the tips of her furry ears and the very end of her lashing tail, which still retained distinct, stark rings of ink-black.
"So," Azriel said smoothly, crossing his arms with a knowing grin.
"Since you’re almost entirely white except for those tiny tips, does that mean you are the most powerful powerhouse in your entire clan?"
Rosalind let out a soft, self-deprecating chuckle, shaking her head.
"Nope. My mother is."
Azriel blinked, wisely choosing to remain completely silent on that particular subject.
If a world-flattening GrandMaster like Rosalind wasn’t even the peak of her family tree, he didn’t even want to fathom what kind of monstrous existence her mother was.
Stepping past her desk, Azriel’s attention was drawn to the back of the spacious office.
Positioned directly behind her massive white workspace was a set of towering, floor-to-ceiling windows.
They were thrown wide open, allowing the crisp, cool evening breeze to sweep into the room, gently rustling the neat stacks of documents on her desk.
Azriel walked up to the edge and looked out.
Expecting to see another flawless, mathematically perfect courtyard, he froze in genuine surprise.
Sprawling directly beneath the Duchess’s private office window was a hidden garden.
But unlike the manicured, pristine greenery he had seen earlier, this sanctuary was vibrant, chaotic, and wonderfully wild.
Bursting with brilliant crimsons, deep violets, and untamed, glowing flora, it was a breathtaking explosion of life that clashed entirely with the stark, minimalist aesthetic of the rest of the mansion.
It was a beautiful anomaly in her perfectly ordered world.
"Why is this garden like this, Rose?" Azriel asked softly, not taking his eyes off the swirling colors below.
"It doesn’t exactly match your clan’s obsession with pristine perfection."
Rosalind walked up beside him, leaning her forearms against the stone window ledge.
As she looked down at the wild patch of color, the fierce, untouchable expression of the Crimson Duchess completely vanished, replaced by a quiet, lingering warmth.
Her tail gave a soft, almost shy flick.
"Those were planted by me," she murmured softly, her golden eyes reflecting the twilight colors of the petals below.
"Every single one of them."
