Chapter 150: Chapter 150 She felt a spark of hope

Author’s POV

Victor had been watching from nearby. His expression grew serious. He walked over and placed a hand on his son’s shoulder.

"Lucas, going back down a road you’ve already walked never ends well."

"Dad, I’m not—"

"Good. I hope you’re not. But sometimes our hearts lie to us." Victor sighed. "You’re not getting any younger. Starting next week, I’m going to introduce you to some suitable young women from good families."

"Dad, I’m not in a hurry—"

"You can’t spend your whole life working. Even if you’re not in a hurry, I am. You saw Aria and Damian tonight, didn’t you? You were moved too, weren’t you? My son is excellent. I know you’ll find a good match."

Victor’s tone was earnest and final. Lucas couldn’t argue. He simply nodded.

After most of the guests had departed, Nathan finally noticed Vanessa sitting alone in the corner.

She’d wanted to be by herself, so she hadn’t left with her parents. She was still sitting at one of the banquet tables, unmoving.

But now that nearly everyone was gone, she finally stood, looking lost and hollow.

"Miss Vanessa, please wait."

Nathan strode over quickly, his voice soft as he called out to her.

Vanessa turned. Her eyes were visibly red and swollen. She glanced at him with obvious discomfort.

"Mr. Smith, is there something you need?"

"I noticed you seemed quite upset. Was there something about tonight’s event that made you uncomfortable?"

Vanessa shook her head. "No."

"You had some drinks tonight, didn’t you? I’m free right now. Why don’t I give you a ride home?"

Vanessa had already called for a car, but when Nathan offered, she didn’t refuse. She was still trapped in the nightmare of Damian and Aria’s marriage. Her mind was on the edge of collapse.

Once inside Nathan’s car, Vanessa refused to sit in the front. She climbed straight into the back seat.

Nathan tried to make conversation, but she was completely distracted, responding with nothing but vague murmurs.

Eventually, he gave up and focused on driving.

But halfway to her destination, at a red light, Vanessa suddenly started pounding on the door.

"I’m going to be sick."

Nathan jerked in surprise and quickly pulled over near the curb.

Vanessa stumbled out of the car, grabbed onto a nearby tree, and vomited violently. There was no trace of dignity left in her.

Nathan turned his head away, pulling a silk handkerchief from his pocket and holding it out to her.

"Miss Vanessa, you really are working hard."

His words sounded sympathetic, but inside, Nathan was disgusted.

Vanessa used to be one of the most celebrated women in high society—beautiful, talented, utterly spoiled.

Yet because of her beauty, countless Alphas had still adored and protected her.And now, because of Damian, she’d fallen to this. Like a spurned woman. It was pathetic.

"Why did you offer me a ride, Nathan? You don’t have to play games with me. If you have something to say, just say it."

After recovering slightly, Vanessa wiped her mouth and tossed Nathan’s handkerchief onto the ground without a second thought.

Nathan’s eye twitched. He wouldn’t have used it again anyway, but the handkerchief had been expensive. And Vanessa hadn’t even pretended to be polite.

"I just feel sorry for you, Miss Vanessa."

Nathan smiled faintly. He’d known she was sharp.

"Sorry? What do you have to feel sorry about?"

"Everyone knows you and Alpha Damian grew up together. Childhood friends. A perfect match. You were even close at once. And now, suddenly, everything’s changed. He’s married to Aria. Doesn’t that make you feel sorry?"

"What do you know?!" Vanessa snapped, her voice breaking.

Nathan’s words had struck a nerve. She glared at him, her eyes blazing.

Nathan remained calm, his smile never wavering.

"You’re right. I don’t know. But I can see that you care deeply for him. And I can also see that a marriage formed so quickly between Damian and Aria... isn’t built to last."

Vanessa’s expression softened slightly. She knew Nathan had an agenda. But right now, she was desperate. She needed someone—anyone—to tell her she still had a chance.

"So what?"

"I’m willing to help you, Miss Vanessa. Just because they’re married doesn’t mean they’ll stay together forever. How long have Damian and Aria even known each other? And how long has he known you?"

Nathan paused, watching as Vanessa’s face gradually brightened. He reached out gently and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

"If being devoted and sincere can’t get you what you want... then take it back. I’ll help you."

Vanessa stared into Nathan’s pale, handsome face, at those seductive eyes. Something inside her ignited.

For the first time in days, she felt a spark of hope.
