Chapter 264: Chapter257: The Throttle

The problem with the cistern plan, Maerath realized four days into building one, was that he had solved the wrong half of it.

"Fast discharge," he said, standing over the bench with a half-wound vessel in front of him. "That’s what I’ve been building toward. Something that can empty itself in a heartbeat, because an engine drinks fast. And it’s wrong."

Gandalf looked up. "It’s what you’ve been insisting on since the coin-toss test."

"It’s wrong because an engine doesn’t drink fast. An engine drinks differently, all the time." Maerath set the vessel down. "Think about the Stormwing on that field. Tomas doesn’t hold the throttle at one setting for forty minutes. He eases it up to roll. He holds it steady in the climb. He backs it off level. He shoves it forward in a turn and pulls it right down again on approach. That engine asks for a dozen different amounts inside a single flight."

"And your cistern gives one."

"My cistern gives everything, immediately, or nothing. It’s a bucket with a hole in it. The moment you open the hole, the whole charge goes." He rubbed his face. "You could fly with that exactly once. Straight up, at full power, until it’s empty, and then down whether you like it or not."

"Arven’s men would find that a mixed blessing."

"So the vessel doesn’t need to be fast. It needs to be obedient. It has to give exactly as much as it’s asked for, at the moment it’s asked, and hold the rest back — and then do it again a second later at a different rate, all flight long." Maerath pulled a clean sheet toward him. "It needs a throttle."

The design took two days and looked, on paper, deceptively simple: the cistern, the draw-loop, and between them a graduated valve — a working that could be opened by degrees rather than merely opened, holding whatever rate it was set to until told otherwise.

"That’s a tap," Gandalf observed.

"It’s a tap."

"You’ve spent two days inventing a tap."

"I’ve spent two days inventing a tap that governs mana at flight loads without cooking itself, and if you’d like to try, the bench is free."

"I’d rather watch and criticize. It plays to my strengths." Gandalf leaned over the drawing anyway, and after a moment his amusement drained out of his face. "Maerath."

"I know."

"Do you? Because I’ve just seen it, and I’d like to be certain we’ve seen the same thing."

"The sphere won’t fill it." Maerath said it without looking up. "Yes. I got there yesterday and I’ve been avoiding saying it out loud."

The problem was the whole problem, and it had teeth.

The sphere read a vessel’s winding before it gave a single drop — that was proven, thirteen crystals in a row. It filled anything built to spend slowly. It refused anything built to spend fast.

And a throttle could do both.

"Set it wide," Gandalf said, "and it’s the greediest thing we’ve ever built. Set it narrow and it’s the most patient. It isn’t one or the other. It’s either, at any moment, at the pilot’s whim."

"Which means when the sphere inspects it, it doesn’t see a jug or a funnel. It sees a vessel that could become a funnel at any time." Maerath finally looked up. "If it’s judging what a thing is capable of, we’re finished. It’ll refuse the tap forever, and every design we build from here has a tap in it."

"And if it’s judging what the thing is doing—"

"Then we might have a road. Set the valve shut. Fill it while it’s closed. It reads a vessel that is currently spending nothing at all, which is the most patient possible state, and it fills." Maerath shook his head. "And then we open the valve afterward and find out whether it considers that a betrayal."

"There’s a cheerful phrase for a report."

"I’m not putting it in the report."

They built it in three days and tested it on the fourth, with the valve wound fully shut, the shed door propped open, and both of them standing considerably further back than the apparatus strictly warranted.

The sphere filled it.

Smoothly, patiently, without complaint — a slow steady pour into a vessel that, at that moment, was spending nothing whatsoever. The cistern glowed from within, took its full charge over the better part of an hour, and sat there quiet and heavy with power.

"It read the closed valve," Gandalf said. "It judges the present, not the possible."

"Don’t celebrate. We’ve only proven it’ll fill the thing. We haven’t asked it what it thinks of the thing being used."

Maerath crossed to the bench, put his hand on the valve, and opened it one notch.

The cistern gave — a small, controlled, entirely unremarkable trickle into the test load, exactly the rate the notch specified. It held it. It didn’t surge, didn’t dump, didn’t stop.

He opened it a second notch. The flow doubled, cleanly, and held.

A third. A fourth. Across the shed, the sphere sat in its cradle doing precisely nothing, expressing no opinion at all.

"It doesn’t care," Gandalf said. "Once the power’s out of it, it doesn’t care what we do with it."

"It cares what we’re pointed at when we ask. Not what we do afterward." Maerath ran the valve back down through the notches, watching the flow drop and steady at each one, obedient the whole way. "That’s the rule. It was never guarding the power. It was guarding the asking."

"That’s a very fine distinction for a rock."

"It’s a very fine distinction for anyone. It’s the difference between refusing to hand a man your knife and refusing to let him have knives at all." Maerath closed the valve fully and stepped back. "It’ll arm us. It just won’t be rushed while doing it."

They ran the throttle through its full range eleven times that afternoon, and it held every setting they gave it.

On the twelfth, Gandalf opened the valve to its widest position — the full-power setting, everything the cistern had, as fast as it could give — and held it there.

The cistern emptied in nine seconds.

"Nine," Maerath said, staring at the drained vessel.

"Nine."

"That’s the whole charge. An hour to fill, nine seconds to spend."

"At full throttle, which no pilot holds for a whole flight." But Gandalf’s voice had gone flat, and he was already reaching for the grid. "Still. Say the arithmetic out loud, because I’d rather hear it from you than work it out alone tonight and not sleep."

Maerath did the sum on the corner of the sheet.

"At a cruising rate — call it a quarter throttle, what the Stormwing would hold level — this cistern runs an engine for about six minutes." He set the pencil down. "It took an hour to fill."

"So an hour of the sphere’s patience buys six minutes of flight."

"From this cistern. Which is the size of a melon and holds a lamp’s worth of power." Maerath gestured at it. "Make it bigger and it holds more, but it fills slower in exact proportion, because the sphere only gives at one rate no matter what you put in front of it. The bottleneck was never the vessel. It’s the well."

Gandalf sat down slowly on the stool by the bench.

"Then we’ve built a beautiful, obedient, entirely functional tap," he said, "on a well that fills a bucket an hour. And Ironbreaker wants to fly a fortress four hundred miles."

"Yes."

"How many hours of that sphere’s patience would that take?"

"I don’t want to do that sum in this room," Maerath said, "and I especially don’t want to do it out loud in this room, given the last time we had a conversation in here the thing tripled its output for no reason we could name."

He wrote the report that night, and it was the strangest one yet, because every single line of it was good news and the sum of them was not.

The throttle works. The cistern fills reliably when the valve is shut, discharges at any commanded rate when opened, and the sphere expresses no objection to the power’s use once released. The governing rule appears to be the vessel’s state at the moment of drawing, not its capability.

This solves the architecture. It does not solve the supply.

The sphere gives at one fixed rate regardless of what receives it. A larger cistern does not fill faster; it fills for longer. Therefore total power available to any machine is limited not by our storage but by the sphere’s willingness, which is constant, patient, and — for the purposes of an engine — extremely slow.

The engineering path forward is unchanged and now considerably clearer: we must learn to build cisterns of the sphere’s own density, and we must find or make a source that fills them faster than the sphere is prepared to.

One sphere, drawn continuously, might keep a small rotor machine in the air for practice flights. It will not fly the Stormhaul.

He read it back, thought about the last line for a while, and left it standing.

Then, at the bottom, in a different hand than the rest, he added one more:

Recommend the rotor testbed proceed immediately on this basis. Six minutes of flight is not a war machine. It is, however, six minutes more than anyone in this territory has ever hovered, and we will learn more from the first of those minutes than from another month in this shed.
