Chapter 247: Chapter 240:The gear
"What about the gear?" Lucien asked. "I raised it with Gandalf and Maerath — where has it landed?"
Ironbreaker set down the strut he’d been turning over and gave Lucien the look of a man who’d been waiting for exactly this question and hadn’t decided yet whether he was glad it had come.
"It’s landed on my bench, Thats where it’s landed," he said. "The mages sent me the idea and left me the impossible half, which is the usual arrangement and I’ve stopped resenting it." He tapped the Stormwing sketch pinned above the workbench, the wheel hanging beneath the wing. "Folding that wheel into the wing is the right instinct. On the scout I let the gear hang — the scout’s a camera with wings and all the time in the world. But this is meant to be the fastest thing in the sky, and you don’t build the fastest thing in the sky and leave its legs dangling in the wind like a startled goose. So yes. It folds. Gandalf and Maerath and I are agreed on that much."
"And the rest?"
"The rest is why it’s taking longer than any of us told you it would." Ironbreaker folded his arms. "Nothing in this territory has ever done this. A wheel that folds into a wing and comes back out again — reliably, every time, with a man’s life resting on the every-time — is new ground. And this particular ground kills pilots when it’s done badly."
"And when it doesn’t come back out of the wing?"
"That," Ironbreaker said, "is the whole problem, and the reason I’ve not promised you a date. I know how I’d fail at this. I want the time and the coin to fail at it here, on a bench, and not at four thousand feet with someone strapped to my mistake."
Lucien nodded slowly.
"Then take the time. I’d rather a slow wheel than a fast funeral."
Ironbreaker grunted, which was, everyone who knew him understood, his way of saying he’d already started.
The problem, as Ironbreaker explained it to the assembled workshop the next morning, had exactly one shape, and every clever idea anyone proposed over the following month was simply a different way of failing to solve it.
"A wheel that is down," he said, chalking a stark, aggressive line on the blackboard, "is a wheel a man can land on. A wheel that is up," he drew a second line, "is a wheel that is out of the way. Both of these are acceptable states. Both of these are survivable states."
He drew a third, jagged line directly between them, and then struck through it so hard the chalk snapped in his fingers.
"This one is not. Halfway is a wheel that folds under the aircraft’s weight the moment it touches the dirt. Halfway is a pilot cartwheeling down a runway at ninety miles an hour inside a burning engine he was very proud of only an hour earlier."
The workshop was dead silent.
"A spectacular way to die, certainly," Brakka remarked, leaning against a workbench with his arms crossed. "But terribly inconvenient for the budget. And we don’t have nearly enough paint to cover up that many skid marks on the airfield."
"So we are not designing a mechanism that merely raises and lowers a wheel," Ironbreaker said, glaring at his apprentices. "Any idiot with a lever can build that. We are designing a mechanism incapable of stopping halfway. That is a very different commission, and I want every one of you to understand that difference before you touch a single tool."
The Honest Muscle and the Opinionated Lock
The hydraulics came first, because hydraulics were fundamentally honest—a fluid line, a piston, a mechanical muscle that pushed and pulled with a strength that scaled with pressure and did exactly what physics commanded. Ironbreaker built the muscle in ten days and pronounced himself satisfied with roughly a third of it.
"It lifts," he said, watching the heavy metal test-rig cycle. "It lowers. It does both with sufficient authority. And it does not, unfortunately, care in the slightest whether it has finished the job."
"Meaning?" Gandalf asked, leaning on his staff.
"Meaning it will happily stall at two-thirds travel, holding the landing leg in exactly the state I’ve just spent a month explaining will kill our pilot," Ironbreaker grunted. "And it will hold it there patiently, confidently, for as long as the pressure lasts. Hydraulics are strong. Hydraulics are not opinionated."
"Then we make them opinionated," Maerath said.
Ironbreaker turned. "Go on."
"A lock." Maerath was already sketching, the shapes coming out of his charcoal fast, the way things did when he’d been thinking about them much longer than he’d previously admitted. "Not a mechanical catch—those wear down, they jam, they lie to you. A mana lock, seated at the only two positions that actually matter. It recognizes up. It recognizes down. It engages, hard, at both—and it recognizes absolutely nothing else. Anywhere in between, it has no purchase at all. It won’t hold the leg halfway because it literally cannot conceive of halfway. It isn’t a state the lock believes in."
There was a long pause as the engineers stared at the magic-assisted geometry.
"So the magic doesn’t actually lift the gear," Ironbreaker said slowly.
"The magic doesn’t lift a thing. Your physical muscle does the heavy lifting. The magic simply refuses to let the leg rest anywhere it shouldn’t. If the hydraulics stall at two-thirds, nothing holds it—the leg falls back down under its own weight, and the pilot lands on a wheel that’s down and safe, rather than a wheel that’s neither." Maerath tapped the sketch.
"Failure has to fall toward survivability. That’s the only rule that matters."
Ironbreaker studied the drawing for a long, quiet moment. "Some engineers," he said finally, "would call this cheating."
"And you?"
"I would call it cheating, and I would call it correct, and I have never once found those two words to be in conflict," Ironbreaker said.
"I call it ’efficient larceny,’" Brakka added, a rare grin cutting through his beard. "If the laws of physics are going to be stubborn, we might as well pick their pockets. I cheat before breakfast. It’s the only way to get anything done around here."
"Exactly," Ironbreaker agreed. "What I will not tolerate is a mechanism that lies to the man sitting in it—that tells him it’s locked when it isn’t, that shows him a reassuring green light over an open grave. Your lock doesn’t lie. It engages or it doesn’t, and if it doesn’t, the wheel comes down and the pilot walks away confused instead of dead. Build it. And build me a way for the pilot to see which of the three states he’s in, because a man at four thousand feet cannot lean out of the cockpit to check."
The Price of the Margin
Lucas arrived on the eleventh day of the build, drawn as ever by the distinct, painful sound of money being spent. He stared at the assembled mechanism—pistons, struts, mana lock housings, indicator crystals, a small and beautiful and appallingly complicated machine—with an expression of pure, unadulterated grief.
"What," Lucas said, his ledger clutched like a shield, "does this do?"
"It folds the wheel into the wing," Ironbreaker said.
"And what does folding the wheel into the wing achieve?"
"It makes the aircraft faster."
"How much faster?"
Ironbreaker consulted a penciled figure. Lucas consulted the figure. There was a silence of the kind that usually happens in a long, strained marriage.
"That’s it?" Lucas whispered. "That’s what this costs? That much refined steel, that much expensive crystal, six weeks of Maerath’s hands, and a mechanism with forty moving parts—just so the aircraft goes a little faster?"
"A fighter is only the ’little faster,’ Lucas," Ironbreaker said, his voice unusually quiet. "That is the entire trade of the thing. Every fighter in the sky will be roughly as strong as every other fighter, and the one that comes home is the one that was a little faster, turned a little tighter, climbed a little sooner. You are not paying for speed. You are paying for the margin, and the margin is the only thing that has ever brought a pilot back to his hangar."
Brakka clapped Lucas on the shoulder, nearly knocking the ledger from his hands. "Look at it this way, paper-pusher. If the pilot dies because he was three miles an hour slower than the enemy, he can’t very well pay his taxes, can he? We’re practically securing Elarion’s long-term tax revenue here. It’s an investment."
Lucas looked at the mechanism for a while longer, his eyes twitching slightly.
"I hate that that’s persuasive," he muttered, and wrote it into the ledger.
The Cold Box
The gear worked beautifully in the warm safety of the hangar.
It cycled—up, lock, hold, release, down, lock—with a solid, metallic double-thunk that Ironbreaker declared to be the most satisfying sound produced anywhere in the territory that year. It cycled forty times in a row without a single complaint. It cycled loaded, with heavy iron weights hung from the strut to simulate the aircraft’s mass, and it cycled fast, and it cycled slow. By the end of the second week, the entire workshop had begun to relax in the way that always, always precedes something going spectacularly wrong.
Ironbreaker, naturally, refused to relax. Ironbreaker built the cold box.
It was an ugly, monstrous thing—a sealed wooden chamber packed with dense blocks of ice and driven colder by one of Maerath’s less glamorous temperature workings, big enough to swallow the entire gear assembly whole. He soaked the mechanism in it for six straight hours, dropping its temperature to the bitter, biting cold of the high altitudes the Stormwing was designed to fight at.
Then, he had them cycle it.
The hydraulics groaned. The strut began to rise.
And two-thirds of the way up, with a sickening hydraulic whine, it stopped.
Nobody spoke. Ironbreaker walked to the assembly, crouched down, and looked at the frozen leg—hanging in exactly the halfway state he had snapped a piece of chalk over a month ago—for a very long, very grim moment.
"There it is," he said quietly.
"Well, look at that," Brakka said, peering over his shoulder. "A perfectly designed, highly advanced, freezing-cold paperweight. I’m sure the enemy will stop shooting out of sheer respect for our craftsmanship."
"The lock’s not engaging," Maerath said, his face pale. "It can’t—the leg isn’t reaching the up position, so there’s nothing for it to grip."
"The lock is behaving perfectly," Ironbreaker snapped. "The lock is doing precisely what you promised it would do, which is nothing, because the leg is nowhere it recognizes. The muscle failed."
He reached in and pressed his thumb against the frozen strut joint. "Cold thickens the hydraulic fluid. The fluid moves slower, the pressure drops, and the piston stalls against a metal strut that’s binding a little tighter than it does in a warm, comfortable workshop. Two small problems, neither of them fatal alone. Together—" he gestured at the frozen, halfway leg.
"But it fell," Gandalf pointed out, stepping forward. "It didn’t hold. When the pressure stalled, the leg came back down under its own weight—exactly as Maerath designed it. The failure fell toward survivable."
"Yes." Ironbreaker straightened his back, his joints popping. "Which is the only reason I am not currently writing a letter of condolence to Tomas Renner’s family. Your lock saved a man’s life today, mage, and there was no man in it. That is the best possible way to learn a lesson."
He turned to the workshop at large, his voice hardening into steel.
"Understand what nearly happened here. That mechanism was absolutely perfect on a warm bench for two weeks. Every single one of you, including me, had begun to believe in it. The sky would have taught us otherwise at four thousand feet."
Magnitude in Numbers
The fix took nineteen grueling days.
They introduced a thinner hydraulic fluid, blended specifically for extreme cold, and a mana-warmed line to keep it honest—Maerath’s contribution, a small, unglamorous working that heated nothing but the fluid itself. They redesigned the strut geometry, the binding joint meticulously reworked by Ironbreaker’s own hands until it moved in the freezing cold box as sweetly as it did in the sun. And they implemented a much higher pressure margin, because Ironbreaker had discovered a new religion, and its central tenet was to never again design a system that had only just enough.
Then, they cycled it.
They cycled it three hundred times. Cold-soaked, loaded, fast, slow, and at every agonizing combination of pressure and temperature Ironbreaker could think of to torture it. He personally watched two hundred and eleven of those cycles, delegating none of the important ones.
On the three hundredth run, the strut came up smoothly, the mana lock engaged with a resounding double-thunk, and the indicator crystal in the mock cockpit burned a steady, beautiful green.
Ironbreaker stared at the glowing light for a while.
"Now," he said, "it can carry a man."
From the high beams of the hangar roof, where he had watched the entire nineteen-day ordeal with the insufferable serenity of a creature who had never once needed a tool for anything, Aurethar spoke.
"I feel obliged to point out," the dragon said, his voice echoing off the rafters, "that my people solved this particular problem several million years ago."
Ironbreaker didn’t even bother to look up. "Did you."
"They’re called legs," Aurethar said, stretching a massive, clawed limb. "They fold. They come out when required. They have never, in the entire glorious history of dragonkind, required a cold box, a hydraulic muscle, or nineteen days of a dwarf swearing at a piston."
"They also," Ironbreaker said, wiping his grease-stained hands on a rag, "cannot be repaired by an apprentice with a spanner. They cannot be manufactured in a workshop, and they cannot be given to eleven hundred human pilots who were not fortunate enough to be born as you. That is the entire difference between us, lizard, and I notice it is the only difference you always seem to leave out of your stories."
He tossed the rag aside, entirely satisfied.
"Anyone can be magnificent alone. It takes an industry to be magnificent in numbers."
"Besides," Brakka shouted up at the rafters, "if we wanted to fly something that smelled like sulfur and complained constantly, we’d just strap wings to Ironbreaker here. The engine’s quieter, and it takes up less space in the hangar."
Ironbreaker let out a low grunt that might have been agreement, or perhaps just a refusal to argue.
Aurethar considered this from the roof, his reptilian eyes blinking slowly. "That," the dragon admitted, after a long silence, "was almost a good answer."
"It was an excellent answer, and you’re going to think about it for a week," Ironbreaker said.
The dragon was, in fact, going to think about it for considerably longer—but he would sooner have swallowed the cold box whole than admit it to a room full of dwarves. Below them, the wheel came up, locked with a solid, reliable snap, and the last thing standing between the Stormwing and the open sky was now, finally, only the guns.
