Chapter 9: Stage 1 - Dragon Touched

Rhea woke three hours after they returned to the village.

Rex was sitting beside her hut, watching the stars wheel overhead. His mana had refilled completely when he hit Level 5, a detail he’d nearly missed in the chaos of the hunt.

[MANA: 50/50]

The healing poultice had done its work. Rhea’s arm was wrapped in clean hide, the bone set, the wound already closing.

"You’re still here," she said, her voice rough.

"You’re still alive."

"Barely." She tried to sit up. Rex caught her shoulder.

"Don’t. Nara said rest for at least a day."

Rhea glared at him. "I don’t rest."

"You do now."

She settled back, grudgingly. Her eyes found his. "The wolf..."

"We killed it."

"You jumped into the pit."

"Someone had to."

She was quiet for a moment. "Thank you."

Rex blinked. "Did you just..."

"Don’t make me repeat it."

[REPUTATION CHANGE: RHEA +25]

[Current Rhea reputation: 40 (Trust)]

[DRAGON AFFINITY: 12 → 15]

He sat with her until she fell asleep again. Then he walked to the central fire, where Nara was waiting.

"The chieftain wants to see you," she said. "Now."

Gorr sat on his skull platform, alone. The village was quiet. Most had gone to sleep. But the old chieftain’s eyes were sharp as he watched Rex approach.

"You killed the alpha," Gorr said.

"We did."

"Good. That pack will scatter now. No more attacks in a while, my people can hunt with an eased mind now" He paused. "But I heard something else. From Nara. The wolf... it bowed to you?."

Rex didn’t answer.

Gorr leaned forward. "She said it lowered its head. Like it knew to worship you or something"

"I don’t know about any of that, honest!"

"Liar."

Rex met his gaze. "I... don’t know yet. I have a spirit in my head. It gives me... power. It’s changing... me. I don’t know anything else from that..."

Gorr was silent for a long moment. Then he laughed that wet, rattling cough.

"You’re honest. I like that." He stood. "The old stories speak about a man like a dragon who will come with blue fire. Power over beasts. A challenger to Valthorion." He pointed at Rex. "Maybe you’re that. Maybe you’re a demon. Maybe you’re just a madman who talks to spirits in his head."

"And What do you believe, chieftain?"

Gorr walked to the edge of the platform. "I believe we have six days left. If you’re still here after that, I’ll tell you."

Rex nodded. "One more thing. I need a place to do a... Uhh... ritual. Somewhere Private. No eyes spying on me!."

Gorr raised an eyebrow. "The cave behind the waterfall. No one goes there anyways. The shamans say it’s haunted."

"Good."

The cave was perfect. Hidden behind a curtain of falling water, the space was dry, warm, and utterly silent. Stalactites hung from the ceiling like frozen teeth. A natural pool reflected the faint light from outside.

Rex sat in the center of the cave and opened the system panel.

[DRAGON AFFINITY: 15]

[Stage 1 (Dragon-Touched) available for 46 hours.]

[Awakening in progress. Accept? Y/N]

[WARNING: This will change you. Physically. Mentally. There is no return.]

Rex stared at the words. No return.

What am I becoming?

He thought of Sofia. Where was she? Was she alive?

He thought of Rhea. The warrior who trusted him now.

He thought of the village. Sixty people. Dying. Waiting for a dragon that would eat them.

Then He thought of the system. The grooming. The hidden agenda behind all of this.

Something new. Something old. Something hungry.

He selected [YES].

[ACCEPTED. STAGE 1 AWAKENING INITIATED.]

[MANA: 50 → 0]

The world exploded.

Heat. Unbearable, searing heat. Rex felt his skin crackle. Blue fire erupted from his pores, wrapping around him in a cocoon of light and flame. The cave walls glowed. The pool boiled.

He screamed... or thought he screamed. He couldn’t hear anything over the roaring in his ears.

His bones shifted. His muscles tightened. Something ancient and primal uncoiled in his chest, spreading through his veins like liquid fire. His eyes burned... a deep, searing pain behind his retinas.

And then, as suddenly as it started, it stopped.

The fire receded. The light faded. Rex collapsed onto the stone floor, gasping.

[STAGE 1: DRAGON-TOUCHED COMPLETE]

[ALL STATS +3]

[NEW TAB UNLOCKED: DRACONIC EVOLUTION]

He opened the new tab.

Rex flexed his fingers. His body felt lighter. Stronger. The aches from the wolf fight were gone.

[MINOR REGENERATION LV.1: ACTIVE]

[HP: 45 → 50]

He crawled to the pool and looked at his reflection.

Vertical slit pupils. Golden irises where brown used to be. His skin had a faint golden undertone, like a tan that wouldn’t fade.

Otherwise, he still looked human.

"Fire breath," he whispered.

He aimed at the pool and focused.

[FIRE BREATH ACTIVATED: 10 MANA]

[MANA POOL: 50/50 → 40/50]

Flame erupted from his mouth a cone of blue-white fire that boiled the pool and scorched the cave wall. The heat was immense. The light was blinding.

When it faded, the pool was half-empty. Steam filled the cave.

"Holy shit," Rex breathed.

[SKILL XP GAINED BY USING SKILLS IN COMBAT OR TRAINING]

He stood. The draconic skills hummed beneath his skin, waiting to be used.

He left the cave. The waterfall soaked him instantly, but he didn’t care. He walked through the village, toward the central fire.

The villagers saw him coming.

They stopped. Stared. A woman gasped. A child pointed.

"His eyes," someone whispered. "Like a snake. Like a... dragon."

Nara stepped forward. Her eyes widened.

"What...have you done?," she asked.

"I... accepted something."

Rhea limped out of her hut, arm wrapped in the poultice. She looked at him. At his eyes.

"Demon," she said.

"Still me."

She walked toward him, slowly, until they were face to face. She studied his eyes. The vertical slits. The gold.

"Can you still see?" she asked.

"Better than before."

She touched his cheek. Her fingers were rough. "They’re beautiful. In a terrifying way."

"Thanks. I think."

[REPUTATION CHANGE: RHEA +20]

[Current Rhea reputation: 60 (Attracted/Intrigued)]

[DRAGON AFFINITY: 15 → 20]

Chieftain Gorr appeared on his platform. He looked at Rex, at the golden eyes, at the faint blue glow still crackling around his fingers.

"Stories," he said, loud enough for all to hear. "We have stories of demons. We have stories of spirits. But this..." he pointed at Rex, "...this is new."

He turned to the village.

"This man killed the alpha wolf. This man repaired our wall. This man carries fire in his blood. I say he is no demon. I say he is ’THE MAN FROM THE STORIES! THE DRAGON-BOUND!"

The crowd murmured.

"I say we follow him."

Rex stepped forward. "hey! don’t want followers. I want builders. Workers. Fighters. I have five days left. In five days, I will make this village strong enough to resist the dragon’s tribute."

He looked at the crowd.

"Who’s with me?"

Silence.

Then Rhea raised her axe. "I’m with you."

Nara stepped forward. "Me too."

Tor and Fen. Marta. Mira. One by one, the villagers raised their weapons, their hands, their voices.

"DRAGON-BOUND!"

"DRAGON-BOUND!"

"DRAGON-BOUND!"

[FACTION REPUTATION: RIVER FOLK +30]

[OBJECTIVE: IMPROVE THE VILLAGE IN 5 DAYS]

[PROGRESS: PALISADE COMPLETE, WOLF THREAT ELIMINATED]

[REMAINING: WATCHTOWER, IRRIGATION, SMELTING]

Rex looked at the system panel. Five days. Three major projects. A village that believed in him and a dragon heart inside him that’s getting stronger.

Then he smiled a wide grin.

"Alright," he said. "Let’s build an empire."

The village cheered.
