Chapter 7: The Builder’s First Day

Rex woke to sunlight slicing through the hide flaps and the smell of woodsmoke. His shoulder throbbed where Nara had stitched it, but the poultice had done its work.

[HP: 38 → 50/105]

[Max HP increased due to level up]

[+5 STAT POINTS STILL AVAILABLE]

He sat up. Rhea’s bed was empty, the furs cold. Her axe was gone from the rack.

"She’s already working. Great. Now I look lazy."

He allocated his stat points quickly.

[STR: 12 → 13]

[AGI: 13 → 14]

[INT: 15 → 16]

[CHA: 17 → 18]

[LUCK: 8]

[LEVEL 3 BONUS: +10 HP, +5 STA, +2% blueprint efficiency]

[NEW BLUEPRINT TIER 1.5 UNLOCKED: SIMPLE TRAP]

He crawled out of the hut. The village was already moving. Women tended cooking fires. Children hauled water from the river. And near the broken palisade, Rhea was directing Tor and Fen in setting new logs.

"You slept late," she said without turning.

"You could have woken me up, you know."

"You looked like you needed it. You bled a lot."

Nara appeared beside him, holding a bowl of mashed grain and berries. "Eat. Then work. The chieftain wants to see your progress by sundown."

Rex took the bowl. "What about the wolf pack?"

"I scouted at dawn," Rhea said. "Their tracks lead east, deeper into the forest. The alpha is smart so It won’t attack again until dark. We have just today to fix the wall."

[QUEST: PALISADE REINFORCEMENT - DAY 2 OF 3]

[REMAINING: 11 ROTTEN LOGS]

[MANA: 5/50 (regen 1 per hour)]

Rex finished his breakfast and opened the blueprint menu. With Level 3, he had access to [SIMPLE TRAP], a pit covered with branches and leaves. Cost: 10 mana, 10 wood, 5 vine.

Too expensive right now. So he had to Focus on the wall.

He gathered Tor, Fen, Marta, and Mira. Rhea joined without being asked.

"Same plan as yesterday," Rex said. "But faster. We need eleven logs today. Everyone works. No breaks."

"And if the goblins come?" Mira asked.

"Then we run as usual, But today, we bring weapons. Rhea and I will watch the perimeter while you cut."

Rhea grunted approval.

They returned to the eastern forest. The dire wolf tracks were visible now... massive paw prints, each the size of Rex’s head. The workers gave them a wide berth.

Rex positioned himself on a rocky outcrop overlooking the cutting site. Rhea stood ten meters away, axe ready.

"You’re not as useless as you look," she said.

"Flattery will get you everywhere."

"Don’t push it."

The morning passed without incident. Log after log fell. Tor and Fen developed a rhythm... one cut, one strip branches. Marta bound them. Mira guarded the pile.

By noon, they had eight logs.

Rex’s mana had regened to 8. He used 5 to activate [CLUB] again, not to build a new one, but to demonstrate the glow to the workers. They needed to trust the spirit fire.

[MANA: 8 → 3]

[BLUEPRINT ACTIVATED: CLUB]

His hands glowed blue. The workers stopped and stared.

"Spirit fire," Mira whispered.

"It’s just... a tool," Rex said. "Like your axe. But different."

Tor touched Rex’s glowing hand. His eyes went wide. "It’s warm. Like the sun."

[REPUTATION CHANGE: RIVER FOLK +5]

[Current reputation: 25 (Friendly)]

The glow faded. Rex flexed his fingers. "Back to work. We have three more logs to cut."

They finished at mid-afternoon. Eleven logs. Twenty vine. No goblins. No wolves.

But as they loaded the last log onto a sled, Rex heard it, a low growl, distant, coming from deeper in the forest.

Rhea heard it too. Her hand tightened on her axe.

"Alpha..." she said. "... It’s Watching."

Rex scanned the tree line. Nothing moved. But the hairs on his neck stood up.

[WARNING: ALPHA DIRE WOLF DETECTED]

[DISTANCE: 300 METERS]

[THREAT: EXTREME]

"Everyone move," Rex said quietly. "Now. Don’t run. Don’t look back."

The workers pulled the sled toward the village. Rhea walked backward, axe raised. Rex stayed beside her.

The growl came again. Closer.

Then it stopped.

They reached the village without incident. Rhea slammed the gate shut behind them. "It’s testing us."

"Let it test," Rex said. "We’ll be ready."

He directed the workers to replace the rotten logs. With eleven new logs, they could fix all the remaining weak points. His mana was only 3, not enough for another blueprint, but he didn’t need the glow for manual labor.

Tor and Fen dug out the rotten logs. Marta and Mira lashed the new ones in place. Rex supervised, adjusting angles, checking stability.

By sunset, the palisade was solid.

[PALISADE REINFORCEMENT: 12/12 COMPLETE]

[+150 XP]

[DEFENSE: 5 → 25]

[MORALE: +10]

[QUEST COMPLETE: PALISADE REINFORCEMENT]

[REWARD: 300 XP]

[LEVEL 3: 260/300 → LEVEL 3: 560/300 → LEVEL 4!]

[+5 STAT POINTS AVAILABLE]

[LEVEL 4 UNLOCKED: TIER 2 BLUEPRINTS (WATCHTOWER, IRRIGATION DITCH, BASIC SMELTING)]

Rex exhaled. Tier 2. Finally.

Chieftain Gorr watched from the skull platform. He didn’t smile, but he nodded.

"One day, demon. Six more."

"I know."

"Rhea," Gorr called. "Walk the perimeter. Double the night watch."

Rhea saluted and strode toward the gate.

Rex sat down by the central fire, exhausted. Nara brought him fish and water.

"You’re pushing too hard," she said.

"I don’t have a choice."

"The spirits don’t reward desperation, but they reward patience."

Rex looked at her. "How long have you been a shaman?"

"Ten years. Since I was fifteen."

"And you’ve never seen anyone like me?"

Nara was quiet for a moment. "No. But I’ve heard stories. The old shamans spoke of a time when the sky burned and a man with blue fire in his hands walked among the tribes. They called him the Dragon-Bound."

Rex’s heart skipped. "Dragon-Bound?"

"The one who would challenge Valthorion. The one who would break the tribute." She met his eyes. "I didn’t believe it... Not Until last night."

[DRAGON AFFINITY: 5 → 7]

[The shaman’s words resonate. Your blood remembers.]

[Awakening: Stage 1 available.]

[Would you like to activate Stage 1 (Dragon-Touched)? Y/N]

Rex stared at the panel. Stage 1. Dragon-Touched. Slit pupils? Scale hardening? Draconic senses?

Do I want to become less human?

He selected [NO] for now.

[Stage 1 available for 72 hours. After that, the choice may be made for you.]

"What does that even mean?"

But the panel didn’t answer.

Rhea returned from her patrol and sat across from him. She was sweating, her chest heaving under the leather tunic. Rex noticed, despite himself, the curve of her body beneath the scars and muscle.

She caught him looking. Her eyes narrowed.

"See something you like, demon?"

"You have dirt on your face."

She wiped her cheek. "Liar."

Nara snorted. "You two are exhausting."

Rhea stood. "I’m going to sleep. You coming, demon? Or do you want to get eaten by wolves?"

Rex looked at Nara. She shrugged.

He followed Rhea to her hut.

Inside, she pointed to the floor. Same spot. Same furs.

"Tomorrow, we hunt the alpha," she said.

"Tomorrow, I build a watchtower."

"This watchtower thing can wait. The wolf can’t."

Rex lay down. "We’ll see."

Rhea climbed onto her bed in silence then.. "You looked at me."

"You looked first."

"I was assessing the threat."

"Assess away."

She didn’t respond. But Rex heard her smile.

[REPUTATION CHANGE: RHEA +10]

[Current reputation: 15 (Cautious Trust)]

[Rhea’s disposition: Warming. Slowly.]

[DRAGON AFFINITY: 7 → 8]

[Proximity to strong female accelerates awakening. Choice window shrinking.]
