Chapter 21: Blood Awakens

Three days had passed since the alliance with the Ash Giants.

The village was changing.

Ash Giant warriors now worked alongside the villagers, hauling enormous stone blocks and reinforcing the walls with effortless strength. Despite their towering size, they moved with remarkable precision, completing days of work in mere hours.

Rex, however, had other priorities.

He sat alone inside the cave behind the waterfall—the place where he had first awakened as Dragon-Touched. The roar of rushing water sealed him away from the outside world, leaving only silence and the faint glow of his status screen.

> [DRAGON AFFINITY: 50/100]

[STAGE 2 – DRAGON-BLOODED AVAILABLE]

[PROCEED? Y/N]

The prompt had lingered for three days.

He had ignored it.

Stage One had already transformed him, sharpening his senses and subtly altering his body. He couldn’t help but wonder what crossing into Stage Two would cost—or what it would make him become.

But the Mouths were coming and Valthorion was watching.

If Rex wanted to protect the people he cared about, he couldn’t afford to hesitate any longer.

He reached out and selected [YES].

> [ACCEPTED.]

[STAGE 2 AWAKENING INITIATED.]

Power erupted through him.

A torrent of searing heat surged through his veins as his bones cracked and reshaped. Every muscle tightened under unbearable pressure while brilliant blue flames burst from his body, engulfing him in a blazing cocoon.

When he instinctively gasped for breath, the sound that left his throat was deeper than before—low, powerful, carrying the rumble of distant thunder.

And then the fire receded.

Rex collapsed onto the stone floor, gasping. His body felt different—lighter, stronger, more alive.

[STAGE 2: DRAGON-BLOODED COMPLETE]

[MANA: 100 → 200]

[MANA REGEN: 1/hour → 3/hour]

[ALL STATS: +5]

[HARD SCALES: LV.1 → LV.2]

[MINOR REGENERATION: LV.1 → LV.2]

[NEW SKILLS UNLOCKED: DRACONIC AURA, ENHANCED BREATH, MANA SENSE, BLOOD BOND]

He lay on the cold stone, breathing hard. The new skills hummed beneath his skin, waiting to be used. The mana pool surged, doubled, filling him with energy that almost felt overwhelming.

He stood slowly, testing his new body. His joints moved more fluidly. His muscles coiled with strength. The Blue translucent scales on his arms were hard, protective, like natural armor.

He walked to the pool and looked at his reflection.

Golden eyes, slitted vertically. He looked like a predator now, a beautiful, terrifying predator.

"Fire breath," he whispered.

[ENHANCED BREATH ACTIVATED: 15 MANA]

[MANA: 200 → 185]

Flame erupted from his mouth—more intense than before, with a wider cone and greater range. The fire scorched the cave wall, leaving blackened stone.

[ENHANCED BREATH: LV.1]

[DAMAGE: 30-40]

[COOLDOWN: 25 SECONDS]

"Draconic Aura."

[DRACONIC AURA ACTIVATED]

A wave of pressure radiated from his body. The air thickened. He could feel it—a subtle intimidation, a weight that would press on lesser minds.

[Mana Sense.]

[Mana Sense Activated]

The world shifted. He could see it now—the faint glow of mana in the air, in the stone, in the water. Ley lines, thin and vibrant, crisscrossed the cave. He could follow them, trace them to their sources.

[Blood Bond.]

[Blood Bond Activated]

He felt connections—threads of warmth leading back to the village. Rhea. Nara. Tor. Fen. Mira. His people. His tribe. He could feel their presence, their life force. He could share his mana with them if needed.

He stood in the center of the cave, breathing slowly. The new abilities were overwhelming, but they were his. Part of him now.

The system panel flickered one final time.

[DRAGON AFFINITY: 50 → 55]

[STAGE 2: DRAGON-BLOODED - ACTIVE]

[WARNING: STAGE 2 AWAKENING HAS ACCELERATED DRACONIC TRANSFORMATION. PHYSICAL CHANGES ARE NOW VISIBLE. THE DRAGON’S HUNGER WILL GROW. RESIST OR SUCCUMB—THE CHOICE IS YOURS.]

He dismissed the panel. He didn’t need the warning. He already knew.

He left the cave and walked back to the village.

The villagers saw him coming. They stopped. Stared. A woman gasped. A child pointed. Tor’s jaw dropped.

"Rex?" Rhea appeared, her hand on her sword. She studied him, her eyes taking in the changes. The scales. The sharper features. The predatory grace.

"Still me," he said.

She walked toward him, slowly, and touched his face. His translucent scales were warm to her touch.

"Your eyes," she said. "They’re... brighter. Like liquid gold."

"Part of the package."

She studied him for a long moment. Then she pulled him into a kiss. "I don’t care what you look like. You’re still mine."

He smiled. It was a different smile now—sharper, more dangerous. But it was still his.

The rest of the village slowly approached. Nara examined his scales with professional curiosity. Tor and Fen marveled at his enhanced strength. Mira asked if he could still eat normal food.

"Yes," he said. "I can still eat normal food."

"Good," Rhea said with a small smile. "Because Marta made stew."

Rex laughed.

The sound was different now—deeper, carrying a faint, rumbling resonance—but it was unmistakably his.

That evening, they stood together atop the watchtower, overlooking the village. Fires flickered below as Ash Giants and villagers shared the evening meal, their laughter drifting into the cool night air.

Rhea leaned against the railing. "So... what’s changed? Besides the obvious."

Rex looked toward the distant mountains, focusing on the strange sensations flooding his mind.

"I can feel mana now," he admitted. "The ley lines beneath the land. The flow of energy through the village."

He turned to her.

"And... I can feel you. Like a warm thread connected to me."

She blinked.

"...That’s a little unsettling."

"I know." He gave an embarrassed smile. "I’m still learning how to tune it out."

Rhea reached for his hand.

"Just don’t lose yourself," she said quietly. "The power, the transformations... none of it matters if you stop being Rex."

He intertwined his fingers with hers.

"I won’t."

She searched his eyes for a long moment.

"I’m still the man who built a wall with his bare hands," he said. "The man who fought a Dire Wolf because he had no other choice."

A grin tugged at his lips.

"And the man who somehow convinced the strongest warrior in the village to fall in love with him."

Rhea rolled her eyes, though she couldn’t hide her smile.

"Confident, aren’t you?"

"I have evidence."

She rested her head against his shoulder.

Together, they watched the stars emerge over the valley while the village carried on below, stronger than it had ever been.

For a moment, there was peace. But Rex knew it wouldn’t last. The Mouths would return. Valthorion was still waiting.

And the power awakening within him had only begun to reveal its true potential.

One step at a time.
