Chapter 12: The Smelter’s Spark
Rex woke to sunlight and the soft sound of Rhea’s breathing beside him.
Her head was tucked under his chin, her body pressed against his side. Her good arm was draped across his chest. The warmth between them was comfortable and natural, like they had been doing this for years, not days.
He lay still, not wanting to wake her. His mind drifted to the night before. The kiss. The way she had pulled him into the hut. The hours of humping, sweating, whispered words and shared warmth.
Not bad for a guy who was dead two days ago.
[DRAGON AFFINITY: 24 → 25]
I didn’t even do anything, Rex thought. The system is just going to do whatever it wants, isn’t it?
The panel flickered but didn’t answer.
Rhea stirred. Her eyes opened slowly, finding his. She didn’t smile, but something in her gaze softened.
"You’re staring," she said.
"You’re worth staring at."
She snorted. "That’s a terrible line."
"Didn’t stop you from kissing me."
She kissed him again, quick and fierce. Then she sat up, wincing as her bound arm shifted.
"Easy," Rex said. "You’re still healing."
"I know. I don’t care." She stood and reached for her tunic. "What are we doing today again?"
"Rhea, you can barely lift an axe."
"I can lift a hammer. And I can watch you work." She looked back at him. "I’m not sitting in a hut while you build our future."
Rex sighed. There was no arguing with her. He had learned that much.
The morning was busy. Rex gathered his crew: Tor, Fen, Marta, Mira and led them to a smelting site he’d scouted the day before: a flat area near the river, sheltered by a rock outcropping.
The villagers had gathered to watch. Word had spread. The demon was going to make something called metal.
Rex opened the blueprint menu.
[BASIC SMELTING (TIER 2)]
[COST: 25 MANA]
[REQUIRES: 30 CLAY, 20 STONE, 15 WOOD, 5 COPPER ORE]
[MANA: 35/50]
He selected it.
[MANA: 35 → 10]
[BLUEPRINT ACTIVATED. BUILD SMELTER.]
His hands began to glow. The villagers gasped. But Rex barely noticed as his focus was on the structure taking shape in his mind.
The smelter was simple. A clay furnace, thick-walled and tall. A stone base. A wooden bellows to feed air to the fire. A channel to pour the molten metal.
He directed the crew. They gathered clay from the riverbank, shaped it into bricks, and built the furnace under his guidance. The work was hard, hot, and messy. But by midday, the smelter stood complete.
"Now we need ore," Rex said. "Copper. We need to find copper."
Marta stepped forward. "There’s a vein. Up the river, past the bend. The old hunters used to bring back green rocks. My grandmother said they held fire."
Rex blinked. "Green rocks. That’s copper ore. Malachite."
"Whatever you call it, it’s there." She pointed. "But it’s close to goblin territory."
Rex looked at Rhea. She was already reaching for her axe with her good hand.
"Don’t," Rex said. "You’re injured."
"I can still fight."
"I know. But I need you here. If I take you and the goblins attack the village, who will lead the defense?"
She glared at him. But she saw the logic.
"Fine. Take Tor and Fen. I’ll stay."
Rex nodded. "Mira, you’re with us. Your spear is too long, but you have good eyes."
The girl beamed.
They set out along the river. Rex led, his dragon eyes scanning the forest.
[DRAGON EYES LV.1: ACTIVE]
[SCANNING FOR THREATS...]
He saw the heat of small animals in the underbrush. The warmth of a distant fire.... probably goblin. The cool outline of a large creature sleeping in a cave. Nothing immediate.
The ore vein was exactly where Marta had said. Green rocks jutted from the riverbank, mixed with dark stone.
"Tor, Fen. Break off as much as you can carry. Mira, watch the tree line."
Rex knelt and examined the ore. It was rich... heavy with copper. He could feel the metal inside it, waiting to be freed.
[COPPER ORE ACQUIRED: 15 UNITS]
"Good," he said. "This is enough for our first batch."
They returned to the village with their haul. The smelter stood ready. Rex loaded the furnace with wood, ore, and charcoal... a simple process, but one that required precision.
He lit the fire. The flames roared. The clay walls glowed.
He worked the bellows. The heat was immense... sweat poured down his face. But he kept going.
An hour passed. Then two.
And then, from the smelter’s base, a trickle of liquid copper emerged. It glowed orange, bright as the sun.
The villagers gasped.
"Metal!" someone shouted. "He’s made the Metal!"
Rex guided the molten copper into a stone mold. It sizzled and steamed, then slowly cooled.
When he lifted the mold, a copper ingot sat in his palm. Small. Imperfect. But real.
[SMELTING COMPLETE]
[+200 XP]
[COPPER INGOT: 1]
[LEVEL 5: 560/500 → LEVEL 6!]
[+5 STAT POINTS AVAILABLE]
[LEVEL 6 BONUS: NEW BLUEPRINT TIER 2.5 (COPPER TOOLS, COPPER WEAPONS)]
Rex held the ingot up for all to see.
"This," he said, "is the future. With this, we can make stronger tools. Better weapons. Armor that can stop a claw." He looked at the crowd. "With this, we can fight back."
The villagers erupted in cheers.
Rhea walked to him, her eyes shining.
"You did it," she said.
"We did it. You protected the village while I worked."
She took his hand. Squeezed it.
"You’re not a demon," she said quietly. "You’re even something better."
"What’s that?"
"A man who keeps his promises."
[DRAGON AFFINITY: 25 → 26]
System, please.
But he didn’t push it away. Because Rhea was looking at him like he was the only thing in the world worth looking at.
And he felt the same.
That night, Rex worked late, designing copper tools. A copper axe. A copper spearhead. Copper-tipped arrows.
His mana was low... only 8 points but he had enough for basic blueprints.
[COPPER AXE (TIER 2.5)]
[COST: 5 MANA]
[REQUIRES: 2 COPPER INGOT, 1 WOOD]
[MANA: 8 → 3]
He crafted two axes before his mana ran out. He would need more ore tomorrow. More wood. More time.
But it was a start.
Rhea found him at the forge, still working by firelight.
"You should rest," she said.
"I will. Just need to finish this."
She sat beside him, watching his hands work. The copper gleamed in the firelight.
"You’re different from anyone I’ve ever known," she said.
"Good different?"
"Good different." She paused. "I spent my whole life fighting. Surviving. I never thought I could... trust someone."
"You trust me?"
"I bedded you, didn’t I?"
He laughed. "Fair point."
She leaned against him. "I don’t know what’s going to happen. The dragon. The tribute. All of it." She looked up at him. "But I know I want to face it with you."
Rex set down the axe. He turned to face her fully.
"Rhea, I..."
She kissed him. There were no words needed.
The fire crackled. The copper cooled. And for one moment, the world was perfect.
[DRAGON AFFINITY: 26 → 27]
I need to talk to the system about boundaries.
But he didn’t mind. Not really.
Because Rhea was in his arms, and the village was thriving. This was the most he had ever felt of the feeling of accomplishment.
