Chapter 393: Chapter 393

At that moment, hearing what Oliver had just said, Cora found herself still staring at him - her eyes moving across his face as though she were searching for something specific in his expression, some detail that would help the pieces of tonight finally lock into place in a way that made coherent sense.

Oliver cleared his throat slightly, and when he spoke again his voice carried a gentleness that contrasted sharply with the authority he had been wielding inside the warehouse.

"You should not be scared of me," he said, and the words came out almost like a request. "You should not be scared of me at all. I need you to understand that clearly. I will not hurt you. I do not hurt innocent people - that is not who I am, that is not what any of this is about." He gestured vaguely in the direction of the warehouse. "But in this life, Cora, some things cannot be left to resolve themselves gently. Some things require force. Some situations need to be dealt with so thoroughly and so decisively that they cannot escalate into something worse."

His jaw tightened slightly.

"If Lovi had been dealt with properly from the beginning - if someone had recognized what he was becoming and stopped him before he accumulated the power and the material to do what he almost did to you tonight - none of this would have been necessary. But that did not happen. And so it fell to me to make sure it ended here, completely, in a way that leaves no room for it to come back."

He looked at her with an intensity that felt almost vulnerable.

"I am not a bad person. You need to know that. Whatever you saw tonight, whatever questions you have about who I am - that core truth has not changed. So please, do not be afraid of me."

Cora was quiet for a moment, and then she cleared her throat and met his eyes directly.

"I am not afraid of you," she said, and her voice was steady and certain in a way that seemed to catch Oliver slightly off guard. "Why would I be afraid of you? I have known you since we were children. I watched you grow. I know how much you hate injustice. I know how deeply you despise bullying and cruelty and people who abuse power." She shook her head slightly. "I know what you have been through in your life, Oliver. I know what you have endured and what shaped you. And I can see - even in what happened tonight - that everything you did was for a reason. For my safety. For your own protection. For the good of people who cannot protect themselves."

She glanced briefly toward the warehouse.

"Those men you command - yes, they look fierce. Yes, they look dangerous. But I could see something else underneath that. I could see the way they respected you. The way they moved with discipline and restraint even in the middle of violence. I could see that they operate on principles, that they are not just thugs following orders but people who share your values about not tolerating bullying or abuse."

She turned back to him.

"So no. I am not afraid of you."

Oliver exhaled slowly, and something in his posture relaxed slightly - a tension he had been holding since the moment he walked out of the warehouse releasing all at once.

"But," Cora continued, her tone shifting slightly, "I do need you to do something for me. One thing. And if you do it, then I will forgive you for keeping all of this hidden. And later - on another day, when we have time and space - you will tell me the full story. You will explain how all of this came to be, how you built what you built, how you became who you are. All of it. Completely."

Oliver looked at her with complete seriousness.

"Anything," he said immediately. "Anything you want. You just have to say it and I will make it happen. Whatever it is."

Cora reached out and took his hand.

The gesture was simple - her fingers wrapping around his with a firmness that communicated both trust and affection - and the moment her skin touched his, Oliver felt warmth flood through his entire body. It was not what he had expected. He had braced himself for her to pull away, to call him a criminal or a thug or any number of things that would have been understandable reactions to what she had witnessed. But instead she was holding his hand, grounding him, choosing closeness rather than distance.

It filled him with a relief so profound he could barely process it.

Cora held his gaze and spoke clearly.

"You remember the bet we made," she said. "The one about Penelope. About proving to her that you are not someone she should have dismissed or underestimated or treated the way she treated you."

Oliver nodded.

"I had a backup plan," Cora continued. "Just in case you were not able to pull off what you promised. I was not going to leave it entirely to chance because the stakes mattered too much to me." She paused, and something shifted in her expression - something that was part satisfaction and part anticipation. "But after seeing everything that happened tonight, after witnessing what you are capable of and how far your reach actually extends, something tells me you are not going to fail. Something tells me you are going to succeed in ways that exceed even what I was hoping for."

She squeezed his hand slightly.

"So here is what I want you to promise me. I want you to make sure I get one over Penelope. Not just a small payback. Not just a minor embarrassment that she can brush off and forget about in a few weeks." Her eyes were bright and focused. "I want it big. I want it massive. I want it so thoroughly overwhelming that she is shocked by it for the rest of her life."
