Chapter 47: Do you think I am heartless?
"Oh?" Ryle raised an eyebrow, ’’The Lus?"
’’One of the guards of the Lu Family delivered them and that is how I came to know that these flowers are from the Lu Family.’’
No details. Nothing.
Daisy let out a relieved sigh inwardly and turned to leave again.
’’Oh, there seems to be note in here,’’ Benjamin exclaimed the moment he placed the flowers down on the floor.’’
"_"
Daisy nearly missed a step, causing her to hold the wall for support.
’’What happened to you?" Ryle’s brows tugged together, ’’Still not feeling well?"
’’A little faint,’’ Daisy said with a professional tone as she turned towards him, "The doctor had advised me to take proper rest. However, I feel uncomfortable resting at home so I am better off at work.’’
Ryle nodded, ’’Good.’’
Benjamin narrowed his eyes at the strange interaction that he was witnessing. How come Dexter seemed so obedient and docile towards the Boss today? What was going on? Did he miss some great fun?
Daisy forced a smile on her face and glanced at the beautiful small card sitting atop the bouquet of daisies.
Ryle observed her expressions in silence. Usually, he did not notice so many expressions on the person’s face but he could see how stiff he looked. For someone who claimed to have no connection with Lu Xian, that was too much of bother to spare for him.
’’Read the note,’’ Ryle leaned back on the swivel chair and pushed his legs above the desk, placing one above the other as he flipped his pen, his gaze never once leaving the person who was standing there beside Benjamin.
Benjamin nodded, ’’Yes, Boss.’’
Daisy held back from rushing back and snatching the card from the man with every bit of her remaining calm. If she rushed up, that would give away that she had something to hide.
After that, even if there was nothing out of ordinary mentioned on the note, her reactions would give it all away and there would be no way to reverse it.
She never thought Lu Xian would send her flowers to her workplace. And that too with a mysterious card that she had no idea what it contained. She knew she could not trust the man.
"Dear Dexter...’’ Benjamin paused the moment he read the opening of the note written on the card and he raised his head to observe the people in the office.
’’Continue,’’ Ryle commanded.
’’Dear Dexter, I am very disappointed in y bad hospitality that landed you in hospital that night. I have been busy and hence unable to visit you all this while. I went to your home today, only to discover that you are back at work. Unfortunate as it is that the lack of manpower in Harper Societies....’’ Benjamin trailed off, gulping softly.
What was he thinking when he happily popped into his Boss’s office with the bouquet of daisies? What in the world was he thinking?
When he looked at both the people present in the office room, he noticed that their faces had turned to the shade of the bottom of two pots.
Daisy’s face darkened. What did Lu Xian mean by he went to her home? What is up with everyone finding her place and visiting there like it’s a tourist attraction?
Ryle’s attention, however had been taken by something else, ’’Lack of manpower in Harper Societies? What gives him such misconceptions?" he narrowed his eyes.
’’Boss, this...’’ Benjamin hesitated.
’’Continue.’’
’’Boss, this note.. is meant for Dexter," Benjamin spoke up after a moment of hesitation. It was apparent that that this handwritten note from Lu Xian was meant for Dexter. And not just that, the note also seemed controversial. No matter how he saw it, his benefit lied in washing his hands off it.
"Dexter informed me that he had no intimate connections with Mr. Lu so there should not be anything private in the letter. Am I right?" Ryle spoke up.
Under the man’s piercing gaze, Daisy nodded stiffly, her gaze wandering back to the small letter in Benjamin’s hand. It seemed so small that she thought it should be fine as long as Lu Xian had addressed her by Dexter’s name in that note. The rest of the written content should be safe as there was not a much of space for note.
"Unfortunate as it is that the lack of manpower in Harper Societies requires a patient to report at work, but things one has to do for professionalism. My offer to you regarding a job at Lu Corporation still stands. Do consider and reach out to me if you change your mind,’’ Benjamin stopped reading and a deathly silence descended in the office.
Daisy was speechless but relieved to some extent. She had claimed that she did not know Lu Xian personally so his bouquet and customized note did not really align with her statement. However, things could have gone worse if he addressed her as ’Daisy’ or wrote anything misleading. But his words were so apt that it seemed like he was just admiring her professionalism and seeing her as a prospect employee that he could hire.
Daisy nodded at Ryle briefly, ’’I’ll take my leave as I have to deal with the pending works of the past few days.’’
Benjamin quickly spoke up, ’’I’ll send these flowers over to your desk immediately.’’
’’No worries.’’
Once Daisy left, Ryle who was sitting on his swivel chair with a nonchalant expression on his face pushed himself to his feet, ’’The audacity of the Lu Family for trying to steal my secretary from right under my nose.’’
Benjamin rubbed the tip of his nose but he remained quiet instead of making any remarks. More or less, he was responsible for this mess. Had he not chirped all the way inside Ryle’s office with the flowers without having any insight on them, Dexter’s note would not have been read in a situation like that.
"Do you think I am very heartless?" Ryle picked up the note from Benjamin’s hand and flipped it over in contemplation.
’’Boss, it seems like Mr. Lu has some misunderstandings. Dexter has been treated rather well by the company. You even avenged him by sending the governor’s daughter abroad,’’ Sure, removing the governor from his position was part of the political play and the consequences of trying to mess with Ryle Harper. However, there was no need for Ryle to send that woman abroad.
’’Dexter is fully capable of protecting himself which is why he is your secretary as well as your bodyguard. But you believed that he was intimidated by the woman’s position in the upper echelons hence let himself be bullied in that moment so you sought justice for them. Mr. Lu or Dexter are unaware of the intricacies behind your action but I have seen everything closely. You can’t fool me on it.’’
Ryle threw the card in the bouquet, ’’Whatever these daisies are anyway,’’ he mumbled as he side-eyed the flowers, promptly dismissing Benjamin’s words.
But Benjamin knew that the man was being awkward, "Boss, the Lu Family is a prominent family is from Beijing. And if I am not wrong, in their culture, daisies signify new friendships, purity and innocence.’’
’’So, is he saying that Dexter is pure and innocent so he wants to befriend him?" Ryle frowned.
"Boss, I talked about the literal significance. What Mr. Lu was thinking while sending these flowers, I am unaware.’’
Ryle’s looked at the flowers discontentedly for a moment before he massaged the spot between his brows, ’’Did you check what I asked you to look into?"
Benjamin paused for a moment before he remembered that he also had another news to share, ’’Boss, I have gotten to the depth of it. The CCTV of that place where you were staying around a year ago was badly messed up. I could not gather any evidence from there. But from what I have gathered, there was a grand wedding being held there that day. And it was the wedding of the eldest daughter of the Chen Family, Daisy Chen."
When they were looking for Daisy under Maxim’s insistence, they had already figured that the woman had run away from her own wedding, causing a scandal in the high society that was later suppressed by the influence of Chen Family to some extent.
’’So, what you are trying to say is that the woman who had barged inside my room could be Daisy Chen in a disguise?"
Benjamin nodded, ’’Boss, after Daisy’s disappearance, Master Chen had dispatched all his elite guards to track her down. And the time that you mentioned when the woman barged inside your room happens to collide with the time Daisy was nowhere to be found. You said the woman in your room happened to be a heiress. The only heiress in chaos that day was Daisy Chen.’’
Ryle fell silent. What was transpiring in his mind, nobody knew.
