Chapter 223: The brightest star in the sky

Things changed too quickly. He thought when he considered that back then he had been living a low-key life, working for Maxim but now Maxim and him were related by blood and they were both members of the Qin Family.

His eyes were downcast all of a sudden.

"Eh... Sir Logan, do you need something?" Ivy hesitantly asked.

It has been rather long since she had interacted with the man. Back in the past, both of them used to work for Maxim so it was easy to pester him endlessly. More so, he barely ever talked or smiled so she had the urge to interact with him more. It always felt like he was a loner.

At this moment, their statuses were too different. It was inappropriate to talk with him randomly so she had been quiet as she watched the kids interacting with each other.

However, every once in a while, she also gazed at Logan. Initially, he seemed to be rather curious and amused by the antics of the kids but then gradually, his expressions were unreadable.

What went in his mind, Ivy had no idea.

But she could not help but feel that Logan was still the same as he was in the past when he used to work for Maxim. Back then, he had no friends, he rarely went out and the only person he interacted with was Maxim but it was also bare minimum.

But even now, when he held such a prestigious position, he seemed to be still all by himself, untouched and unapproached by anyone, like a lone snow lotus.

Ivy sighed when the man paused briefly and then shook his head.

"You are not looking too well. Why don’t you rest?"

"No need."

"You just had lunch. If you feel like it, you can take a walk in the back garden."

"I’m fine," the man said without raising his head.

"Ah, I am not denying your fineness," Ivy shrugged, "I just feel like you should take a look at the back garden."

The man raised his head to look at her, his brows tugging together slightly.

One could deny the way his appearance was too perfect. Even when he frowned, he appeared rather charming.

Sigh. Beautiful people really had their way of existing. Just look in the mirror everyday and recite ’I will bless some pesky mortals with the visual of my breathtaking appearance today’.

Since she had his attention, Ivy did not want to miss the chance so she hurriedly added, "The front yard is beautiful as it is. You should have already seen it but the back garden of the Chen Mansion is even more beautiful. I don’t have the slightest interest in flowers and all but I was still taken aback. I am sure you will like it too."

The man was silent.

Ivy smiled even more brightly, the words ’I won’t give up at this point’ stamped all over her face, "Little Eli and Angel will like it too."

Logan paused, then looked at the two kids who were staring at each other like they had discovered some new sort of existence on Earth then he glanced at Ivy whose eyes were visibly burning with vigor and expectations.

Despite himself, he gave a small nod, "Let’s go."

Ivy informed Maxim and Ryle about it before she led the way to the back garden for the man.

Ryle was unbothered about it given the tight security in the mansion. And Ivy more or less knew her way around things, so there would not be trouble.

But the gaze with which he looked at Logan’s back made Maxim roll his eyes.

"Don’t you think that this brother of yours has become more of an iceberg?"

"If you are saying it because he did not try to approach us just now, then you should know that even I would not approach you if I was in his shoes."

Imagine minding your own business but being tracked with a gaze filled with animosity. Just thinking about it would give one goosebumps.

Ryle shrugged a shoulder, not feeling the slightest of guilt over such matters, "You are the one who is talking."

When Maxim was pursuing Diana, the man could be jealous of non-living things as well, which was unnecessary since Diana also had him in her heart and they were childhood sweethearts.

But when it came to him...

Ryle leaned his head on the glass pane and looked out at snowfall.

When it came to him, he did not hold as much of a position in Daisy’s heart. She liked him and maybe he amused her. But like the fleeting touch of a butterfly, she was there and she also wasn’t. She would disappear if he closed his eyes for too long, he felt at times.

But rightfully so. She was great in every aspect. Like the brightest star in the sky. While he... was filthy. His entire life was built on chaos that he was not very proud of. He had weaknesses he could not embrace and people he could not protect in his past.

He had his regrets, resentments and paranoia that shaped him into the kind of person that Daisy encountered when she worked for him. Someone who was ruthless, someone who terrified her enough that she ran away overnight in fear of incurring his wrath.

Ryle knew that Daisy deserved someone who was probably as pure as her. She deserved better than him.

But he was too selfish, too greedy and insatiable.

He could not endure the thought of seeing her in someone else’s arms, even if that’s her rightful place.

All he could do was hold onto her as tightly as he could and keep her by his side, whether she wanted it or not.

If she deserved better, then he would become better for her.

The way this possessiveness consumed his chest suffocated him from inside. It was bitter and painful but there was also a hint of sweetness when he imagined the way she smiled at him, the way she held onto him and the way she moved in his arms.

But the more he had her, the further he was scared to lose her.

"What are you thinking?"
