Chapter 137: It was not the worse yet
Once Daisy left, Maxim kissed Diana passionately. It was not until she was completely breathless did he finally let her go.
Maxim ruffled her hair and leaned in to kiss her forehead, ’’Take care, baby. Wait for me to come back. I will get you your favorite cake and ice cream all.’’
Diana’s face had turned into a deeper shade of red at some point. What was up with this man? So sneaky.
Daisy sat in the car and tapped on the steering wheel as she waited for Maxim. But even after some time, there were no signs of the man. She did not have to think much to understand what might be transpiring that caused the delay.
Her gaze landed on her phone and she picked it up.
Daisy glanced at the phone for some time before she opened Ryle’s number and called him.
The ringing continued but the man did not answer the call.
"Where are you?" The image of his wound the last time he disappeared for a week still seemed to be fresh in his mind.
Did he get himself in another trouble?
Daisy frowned and called him again.
This time, the call was answered on the last ring.
Just as Daisy opened her mouth to speak, an unfamiliar voice came from the other side.
"Hello.’’
Daisy paused when she heard the voice. Her first instinct was to think that it was Aunty Lu who answered the tone but it did not sound like her.
Aunty Lu or anyone else would not normally touch Ryle’s phone.
Daisy glanced at the phone.
’’Hello?" the woman continued speaking.
Daisy heard another voice chiming in, ’’Miss Queens, it’s time...’’
’’Oh, I will go then...’’
There were some rustling sounds on the other side before the call was disconnected.
’Master got engaged to Miss Queens when they were young..’
Aunty Lu’s words reverberated in her mind.
’Click’
The door to the car opened and Maxim got inside the shotgun seat, only to find Daisy looking at her phone in a daze.
’’Is everything fine?"
Maxim’s voice broke Daisy’s trance. She glanced at him and nodded, ’’You didn’t have to...’’
Maxim shook his head and interrupted her, ’’If Ana was aware of these things, she would not have let you confront your father alone. But since we are not telling her about it, I don’t want you to be by yourself.’’
Daisy did not really dislike Maxim before. Except she had always felt that the man was too much like a sly fox who knew the right way to seduce her sister who saw him as a gullible and innocent guy. It was not until Diana and Maxim officially got into a relationship did she realize why Diana loved Maxim the way she did.
’’Let’s go,’’ Daisy looked at her phone for one last time before she switched it off and threw it to the backseat and stepped on the accelerator.
...
Helian Chen stood in front of the ICU and stared at the woman who was lying on the bed peacefully. He opened the door and stepped inside and his footsteps came to a halt when he reached the hospital bed.
Her beautiful face had gone pale and her lips were dry and chapped.
Helian Chen grabbed a few tissues and poured a few drops of water on it before he dabbed it gently on her lips.
In the past two days, she had woken up twice but because of her bad temper, the doctor tranquilized her to sleep under his consent so that she did not harm her body in the process.
It was perhaps the first time in a long time that he saw her in such a calm state. A time where she was not fighting, she was not losing control and she was not angry. She just laid there silently.
The door to the hospital room opened.
"President, the lawyers are done with the arrangements,’’ Secretary Han spoke in a soft voice as he came to stand beside the man.
Helian Chen glanced at Alice for one last time. He covered her pulled the duvets up slightly to cover her exposed hands and then he walked out of the ICU.
The entire floor was completely blocked and closed off by Helian Chen so the man calmly took a seat on a chair in the hallway.
’’How are the girls doing back at the mansion?" he questioned.
Secretary Han, being the efficient secretary that he was, had contacted the butler and kept track on everything so he immediately answered, ’’Both elder miss and young miss seemed to be worried about Madam’s health. Young Master Maxim has been taking care of young miss closely. But elder miss had locked herself in the room for the past two days. The servants said she was barely touching her meals.’’
Helian Chen, who was calmly listening to his secretary’s analysis had a change of expression when he heard the last sentence. Others might not know but he knew he elder daughter well. If she was stressed, she would find a way to relieve her stress rather than locking herself in her room.
And if she locked herself in her room, it was not stress that was keeping her inside. She was up to something. ’’Look into what Daisy has been up to,’’ he told the secretary, ’’Once things are in a better state, I will talk to her.’’
’’You don’t need to look into what I am up to, I will tell you. It will be too late by the time things are in a better state so I prefer if you talk to me now.’’
The crisp sound of heels clicking against the hospital floor approached the hallway before Daisy appeared in their line of sight.
Helian Chen froze and raised his head to look at her and he saw Maxim standing beside her with a quiet stance, but his gaze seemed to emphasize Daisy’s stance as well.
He was also there for an answer.
’’You...’’ Helian Chen had just started speaking when she interrupted him.
’’We can’t talk here out in the hallway, can we?" Daisy did not look at the man and shifted her gaze to Secretary Han.
Secretary Han shivered under her gaze that seemed to see right through him. He gulped, ’’E-elder miss, this hallway is blocked. There is no one other than you around you.’’
When she heard that, Daisy looked past him.
With determined footsteps, Daisy walked towards the VIP room in the end of the hallway.
Helian Chen glanced at Maxim with eyes that were seeking help, ’’What is this about?"
"It’s not my place to talk about it,’’ Maxim calmly tucked a hand inside his pocket, ’’And I don’t think you really need me to tell you what it can be about.’’
’’What nonsense! What do you mean by it’s not your place to talk about it?" Although the circumstances of Diana’s and Maxim’s relationship were rather different but Helian Chen always saw the man as his son-in-law, ’’And Maxim, you need to understand that this is not the ideal time to talk about anything...’’
Maxim looked at the man emotionlessly, ’’There is no ideal time for you to tell us the things that burden you if we are a family.’’
Maxim was a man with a cold nature and he did not explain his words or sentiments. Once he finished speaking, he turned around and left.
Helian Chen looked at his retreating back emotionally.
Secretary Han could not understand what was going on but he knew it was not his place to talk in the family matters. Given the current circumstances, it seemed like things were not as simple, ’’President, I will arrange more bodyguards in front of the ICU. Don’t worry about Madam,’’ he said, afraid that the man would worry about his wife because of the crowd of reporters outside the hospital.
Inside the VIP room.
Daisy threw a flash drive on the bed the moment Helian Chen entered inside the room.
’’There are destroyed hospital reports inside it that records Mrs. Chen’s medical history but then it is brief and most of the important data has been erased completely. She visited to hospitals when she got married to you no record is left as to what she was suffering from,’’ Daisy calmly said as she gazed at her father.
’’I have never meddled with your personal affairs but growing up, I have always heard her mention that you cheated on her, you were with other women but I cannot find a single evidence to her claims. You never had an affair with your secretary or anyone when she was pregnant. But you never justified yourself when she blamed you.’’
’’Worst of it all, she was adopted by my maternal grandfather and she is not their biological child. Why were we kept in dark about it?"
The echoes of Daisy’s questions seemed to be resounding in the empty room and they stopped Helian Chen in his tracks.
As the door closed behind him, he found himself looking at his daughter who seemed to be bewildered by everything that she had discovered.
And he did not have it in himself to tell her that it was not the worse yet. It was not the end to what he had kept from them.
