Chapter 111: A doctor cannot heal me any better
Daisy briefed him about her attempts to look into the assassination and asked him whether he found some leads on the same.
’’I was away for a while so I haven’t visited those pests yet. As per the updates, they seem rather stubborn about opening their mouths. I think a personal visit is essential to get them to talk.’’
’’I will go with you.’’
’’You don’t need to...’’ Ryle trailed off when he met her persistent gaze.
He did not know why out of instinct, he did not want Daisy to go to the torture cell of Harper Societies. And it took him only a second to realize that she had been there for many times before as Dexter so it should not be her first time.
Daisy’s way of business has been rather straightforward. Even though she did not flinch when killing people in the face of danger, but her methods were not as twisted as Ryle’s, which is why she had felt disgusted when she went to the torture cell for the first time in her life.
However, now, she was accustomed to many things.
’’Fine, you can tag along.’’
Daisy did not respond to him. His words on this particular matter did not count. When he said, she did not need to go, she was unmoved and when he said that she could tag along with him, she still remained unmoved because at the end of the day, she had already decided that she would be going. What he said did not matter.
Daisy had just gotten up from the bed when she suddenly paused and walked around bed, much to Ryle’s surprise.
’’What is this?" she pointed her finger at the dustbin in the corner of the room that had bloodstained gauzes inside it.
When she gazed at Ryle, she noticed a wet patch on his shirt. However, because the man was wearing a black shirt, it was not that visible and she had not paid attention to it before.
’’Are you injured? What happened?" Daisy approached him again.
’’Are you worried about me?" Ryle teased her discreetly, expecting her to blush.
However, instead of being flustered, Daisy looked at him in adamance, ’’Are you going to tell me or not?" the moment she finished speaking, she realized how demanding her voice was.
Were they even that close for her to ask him things in such a tone?
Her eyes widened.
It was as if Ryle could see the countless little thoughts flashing by her head in a brief moment. ’’I am injured and it’s pretty painful, if I have to be honest,’’ He quickly spoke up to interrupt her overthinking.
Daisy frowned and stopped the trail of her thoughts. From the corner of her eyes, she noticed a file lying on the bedside table, pressed under the book that Ryle had been reading earlier.
Upon a closer look, she found it extremely familiar.
’’Isn’t this....’’
Ryle knew that she had recollection of this file so he nodded, without hiding anything from her.
The night when Daisy had had sex with Angel’s father, she had gone to that specific nightclub with Ryle to track a drug lord under Ryle’s orders. However, they were only able to get in touch with the subordinate of that person.
The file that was lying on Ryle’s desk was related to the same syndicate that the man was looking into. Back then, the file was rather thin, but now it was almost as thick as the book lying atop it which told Daisy that Ryle never stopped looking into that syndicate.
’’Then, are the same people? The ones who were behind the attack in Shanghai and the assassination attempt at my place?" It was a far-fetched idea to think that Ryle’s enemies would attack her.
She thought she had offended someone and hence she was hell-bent on tracking them down. But it was not completely a bizarre idea for Ryle enemies to attack her considering that she had been around him for the past few weeks now so of course, they possibly assumed that they had some connections. However, all of it were just her conjectures.
"No.’’ Ryle had given it a thought as well but his conclusions were pretty different.
’’No?" Daisy paused for a moment before her eyes widened and a realization dawned on her, ’’The people who attacked me wanted to catch me alive.’’
’’Perfect,’’ Ryle smiled when she pin-pointed the fatal flaw in her calculations, ’’If that syndicate is involved in this, they would not dawdle around, be so cautious, and want to capture you alive.’’
At the end of the day, that’s how those syndicates operated. In their eyes, only Ryle should be worthy of their attention.
Daisy understood it.
She inhaled a deep breath before mumbling, ’’We will figure it out.’’
However, since her gaze was focused on the file kept on the bedside table, she did not notice the smile in Ryle’s eyes when she said ’’we’’.
Feeling a searing gaze on her, she turned her face to the side and looked at Ryle but when she gazed at him, his expressions had returned to normal so she did not find anything amiss.
Her attention however shifted to his black shirt.
’’You are bleeding,’’ Initially, she thought it was just the remnants of blood but the wet patch on his shirt just kept increasing gradually, ’’Shall I call a doctor?"
Ryle grabbed her hand, stopping the woman who was about to flutter out of his sight.
’’A doctor cannot heal me any better.’’
’’Huh?" Daisy was bewildered. The wound was on his body or was his brain also affected? "What can heal you better then?" Sitting there, being drenched in blood and talking crap?
Daisy did not know why she felt so annoyed.
It was as if she was dealing with someone of Angel’s age only. Ridiculous!
’’No, better things. Better people,’’ Ryle’s eyes twinkled.
Daisy could not decipher any of his nonsense and she stood there, confused.
Ryle released her hand and pushed himself out of the bed.
