Chapter 460: Chapter 456: The Sun Family Siblings Are a Bit Annoying
Sun Yeshu glared at Gu Jiaojiao. "What do you mean by that? Aren’t you going to admit defeat?"
"The competition isn’t over yet."
"Then why did you just say I was right?"
Gu Jiaojiao nodded. "I did say that. What I meant, though, is that even if we lose and I have to kneel to you, it’s still not as disgraceful as your mother running over here, wailing that her son was dead just to extort money from my family. You said it yourself!"
Sun Yeshu trembled with anger. Staring at Gu Jiaojiao’s bright, radiant smile, she wished she could march right over and slap her across the face!
’I’m so mad I could die!’
’ARGH!’
The crowd froze for a second before the words sank in. Those who couldn’t hold it back let out a "PFFT" of laughter.
"That’s right! Earlier, a woman from the Sun family ran over, crying that Leng Yuan had beaten her son to death and demanding money. But her son was right there, fishing away with a completely baffled look on his face. That was hilarious!"
"If you’re going to extort money, you should at least check if your son is actually dead. What a laughingstock."
An auntie spoke up, mocking the scene the Sun family’s mother had caused.
Another auntie, one with a son of her own, muttered under her breath.
"I used to think that Ye Shu girl was quite nice. I was even thinking of sending a matchmaker to their home to arrange a marriage. But seeing how utterly unreasonable the Sun family is... I’d better just forget it. A daughter-in-law from a family like that would surely mean no peace at home."
Villagers were traditional. They wanted a daughter-in-law who was virtuous, gentle, down-to-earth, and hardworking. Looks were secondary; what mattered most was that she knew how to manage a household.
When Sun Yeshu’s mother heard that Leng Yuan had supposedly beaten her son to death, she didn’t even check if he was actually dead or badly injured. She just ran over to start wailing and demanding money.
Becoming in-laws with such a heartless and insatiably greedy family would be like having a locust latch onto your leg; you wouldn’t be able to shake it off until it had sucked you dry.
With that thought, quite a few people dismissed any notion of proposing a marriage.
Sun Yeshu: ...
She heard the crowd’s gossip, all because of the foolish scene her mother had caused. Sun Yeshu wished she could just roll her eyes back and faint to escape everyone’s judgment.
But she was still waiting for Gu Jiaojiao to kneel to her.
She had been trying to humiliate Gu Jiaojiao, but as soon as Jiaojiao opened her mouth, the humiliation was turned back on her.
"You just wait."
Sun Yeshu spat out the threat and returned to Sun Yecheng’s side. "Second Brother, you have to win. Otherwise, our family will become a laughingstock."
Sun Yecheng took a deep breath.
"Don’t worry!"
A short while later, time was up.
"Time’s up! Stop fishing."
The two men immediately stopped what they were doing.
The riverbank was wide, and the two competitors were separated by more than ten meters. During the competition, crowds had gathered around each of them, so neither knew how many fish the other had caught.
The people counting on Sun Yecheng’s side announced the total.
"Yecheng caught a full thirteen fish."
"Isn’t that a guaranteed win?"
When the crowd heard Sun Yecheng’s score, they immediately broke into cheers.
"Ye Shu, your second brother is amazing! To think he caught so many fish! Gu Jiaojiao will have to kneel to you any minute now!"
Sun Yeshu let out a long breath, feeling the knot of anger in her chest finally loosen a little.
The people counting Leng Yuan’s fish were left speechless.
’Are these people nuts? They announce one number and act like they’ve already won, without even bothering to ask about the other side.’
Sun Yecheng and Sun Yeshu were already striking victorious poses. Sun Yeshu, especially impatient, started shouting directly at Gu Jiaojiao, telling her to get on her knees.
Gu Jiaojiao rolled her eyes at her and didn’t say a word.
It wasn’t just Gu Jiaojiao who was speechless; the onlookers were, too.
For the first time, many realized just how obnoxious the Sun siblings were.
