Chapter 186: Chapter 186: Goals
Kael paused as silence stretched for a few seconds.
"I do have quite a lot of goals," Kael said finally. He set the cup down. "Some you might even oppose me for."
Like killing father, Kael thought
He continued. "There are some people on my blacklist. Marcus and Sebastian, for starters. They made my childhood quite the living hell." He leaned back in his chair. "I do want the position of Family Head."
A pause.
"But not for myself. After all, I’d be quite the lazy leader." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Honestly, I would have run away from this family years ago. But from what I heard, the last person who tried that had his legs removed."
Cassandra’s expression didn’t change. "Father was quite creative that day."
"So I’ve heard." Kael met her eyes. "If I take over, I’ll just be a puppet master. I’ll leave a Vorn sibling I trust to handle the family while I do what I actually enjoy."
Cassandra laughed.
"And how do you plan on doing that?"
Kael scratched his head.
Cassandra’s smile faded. "You have no army. You have no ally. The Blades are split. The branch families don’t know you exist. You are, in every meaningful sense, alone."
"All of those are still works in progress." Kael shrugged. "After all, I’m a one man army."
"Youre arrogance."
"More like confidence."
"Those are often the same thing, right before the fall."
She stood up.
"Come with me."
Kael followed her through a door behind the bookshelves. A staircase descended. Then another. The walls shifted from polished stone to reinforced metal embedded with rune arrays so dense they glowed faintly even in the low light.
The training room opened before him like the inside of a war god’s armory.
It was massive. At least sixty meters across with a ceiling that vanished into darkness above. The floor was a single slab of black metal etched with defensive formations Kael couldn’t begin to identify. The walls were lined with weapon racks — hundreds of them, stretching back into shadow.
His Spirit Eyes of the Dark Emperor flared instinctively.
Tier 1 weapons. Dozens of them. Swords, spears, halberds, axes — each radiating the dense mana signature of top-tier craftsmanship. Behind those, Special Grade weapons with auras that made his eyes sting. And at the very back, secured behind individual containment barriers—
Artifact Grade.
Kael’s breath caught.
There were only five known Artifact Grade weapons in the entire Vorn family. Weapons forged in eras before the current age, carrying properties that bordered on conceptual. One was the Family Head’s personal weapon in his younger days. Two were sealed in the family vault. The fourth belonged to Blade No. 1.
And the fifth...
His eyes settled on an axe.
It was beautiful in the way that natural disasters were beautiful. The handle was black metal wrapped in what looked like petrified dragon sinew. The blade was a single piece of something that wasn’t quite steel — it shifted between obsidian black and deep crimson depending on the angle, as if it were breathing. Runes crawled across its surface in patterns that hurt to look at directly.
His Spirit Eyes couldn’t parse its power level.
Cassandra’s axe.
She walked past the Artifact Grade weapon without a glance and selected a Tier 1 axe from the nearest rack.
She turned and pointed it at Kael.
"Draw your weapon. Let’s see if you’re worthy of the throne."
Kael didn’t move. "Why would I fight you?"
His Spirit Eyes had already completed their analysis. Cassandra stood at the very peak of the Spirit Soul realm — a single step from Origin. Quasi-Origin. In her early fifties but appearing no older than her mid-twenties, the aging effect of high-level cultivation. To their father, who had lived over four centuries, she was still like a child. To Kael, she was a mountain he couldn’t climb. Yet.
"If you lose, I will destroy your cultivation right here." Cassandra’s voice was casual, as if she were discussing the weather. "Don’t worry. I’ll suppress my mana to the Mana Heart realm."
Her aura contracted.
The pressure that had been making Kael’s bones itch vanished, replaced by something that should have been manageable. Mana Heart intensity. Same as his.
But it wasn’t the same.
Even suppressed, the density of her aura was leagues beyond his. It was the difference between a candle and a star that had chosen to look like a candle.
The light was the same. The heat behind it was not.
Quest Generated: PROVE YOUR WORTH
Objective: Defeat Cassandra Vorn in combat (mana-suppressed)
Reward: 20,000 Shadow Points
Note: Failure results in death. The System recommends running.
Kael cursed internally. Thanks for the recommendation. Very helpful.
He drew the Void Edge MK. II blades from his storage ring. Shadow Armor materialized over his skin in a ripple of darkness.
Cassandra tilted her head then she moved.
Kael didn’t see the first step. One moment Cassandra was ten meters away. The next her axe was splitting the air where his throat had been. He twisted — Shadow Step carrying him three meters left — and brought both blades up in a cross-guard.
The impact nearly dislocated his shoulders.
Cassandra’s suppressed mana hit like a hammer wrapped in silk. Her axe moved in flowing arcs that left no openings, each strike flowing into the next like water finding cracks in stone.
Kael met her gaze.
And saw death.
His will to fight drained like water from a broken cup. His hands wanted to open. His blades wanted to drop. Every instinct screamed at him to kneel, to submit, to stop.
His will was being hijacked.
Kael’s teeth clenched so hard his jaw cracked. He recognized the mechanism — intent.
He released his own intent in response.
Slaughter Intent erupted outward like a pressure wave. The feeling of thousands of deaths compressed into a single emotional frequency, washed over the room. The grip on his will shattered like glass hit by a hammer.
Cassandra’s advance paused for the first time. Her cold eyes flickered with something with interest.
"Slaughter intent." Her voice carried a note of genuine approval. "Very impressive. One of the rare types. That, I haven’t seen in your records."
Her axe rose.
"Show me more."
She rushed him.
Kael met her with Shadow Step. Their weapons clashed — CLANG, CLANG, CLANG — sparks screaming off the intersection points. Cassandra’s axe work was flawless. Decades of combat experience compressed into every swing. Kael’s body cultivation kept his bones intact, but her technique was simply better. She anticipated his feints. She read his weight shifts. She punished every microsecond of hesitation.
He was losing the weapon exchange.
He immediately activated Lightning Body.
White arcs exploded across his skin. His physical form flickered — solid, lightning, solid, lightning — as the King Grade technique converted his body into living lightning. The transformation was instantaneous and disorienting. He could feel every nerve ending singing with electrical energy.
Then Thunder God Technique, First Form.
His perception accelerated.
The world didn’t slow down — that wasn’t how the technique worked. Instead, his processing sped up. His nervous system synchronized with the speed of electrical signal transmission. He saw Cassandra’s axe mid-swing and had time to analyze the trajectory, calculate three possible responses, select the optimal one, and execute it — all in the space between heartbeats.
His whole body flickered with white lightning arcs.
Cassandra’s eyes narrowed. And for the first time since the fight began, she smiled.
