Chapter 175: Chapter 175: Spoils of War
ARC 2: SHADOWS DEEPEN
The stage was quiet for the first time in two hours. Medical staff moved between the wounded, green and golden healing light flickering in steady rhythms. The crowd’s roar had settled into a low hum of conversation and celebration. Heaven’s Gate banners waved from every section where their students had managed to secure seats.
Michael Weston approached Kael on the stage with his regenerated arm hanging slightly loose at his side, the flesh still pink and new from been newly regenerated.
"You fought well," Michael said, extending his hand. "I hope to fight you again. Properly. One on one, when neither of us is running on fumes."
Kael looked at the hand for a moment, then shook it.
"Next time," Kael replied, "I won’t need help."
Michael smiled. "I expect nothing less from a warrior such as yourself."
He walked away, rejoining the two remaining Empyrean Celestial students who waited for him at the edge of the stage.
The stadium buzzed with post-tournament energy, but underneath the celebration, exhaustion hung heavy. Not everyone was in a celebratory mood. The back-to-back rounds of the tournament had ground down even the victors. Students who had been eliminated in earlier rounds hadn’t been given time to recover before being brought to watch the final round. Caelan had been taken away by medical staff immediately after his elimination, his soul strain requiring specialized care that the arena healers couldn’t provide.
Caelan had been taken away by medical staff the moment he appeared on stage. His unconscious body had been carried to a private treatment room, his soul damage from overextending his Reality Annex requiring specialized care that the public healers couldn’t provide.
Yenna sat near the edge of the stage with her eyes closed and her arms wrapped around her knees. The strain of pushing her Frost Domain and Reality Annex beyond their limits had left her hollowed out, her mana pathways raw and inflamed. Frost still crackled weakly from her fingertips, uncontrolled, a sign of how depleted her internal reserves were.
Footsteps approached.

Ryan Durant walked toward Yenna with his hands in his pockets and an expression that could have been mistaken for casual if not for the deadness in his eyes. His Neon Abyss uniform was torn and bloodstained, and something behind his gaze had shifted during the tournament, cracked loose by the pressure of performing below expectations.
An evil expression flashed across his face as he closed the distance.
This is all your fault, he thought. Making me use lose, fucker. Injuring me. Now they’re going to kill me because we didn’t make top four. Neon Abyss doesn’t tolerate failure.
Death energy gathered in his right palm, black-green and sickly, condensing into a concentrated sphere of necrotic force. He was three meters from Yenna. Two. One.
A wooden staff cracked across his forearm.
PAM.
A blade pressed against his throat, cold steel kissing skin, dark energy humming along the edge.
Cassian stood to Ryan’s left, staff still raised, his silver eyes carrying killing intent so dense that the air around him physically darkened.
"Hey," Cassian said quietly, his voice soft and utterly terrifying. "Try taking one more step. We don’t care about the competition anymore. We’ll kill you."
Kael stood to Ryan’s right, Void Edge blade resting against the Neon Abyss captain’s carotid artery. His expression was calm. Almost peaceful. But the smile on his face was anything but.
"Go ahead and move," Kael said, his voice carrying a warmth that made the threat feel worse. "But the second you do, you’re dead."
Ryan laughed maniacally.
He’s gone mad, Kael thought as a frown appeared on his face. What could have broken him.
The crowd had gone silent. Thousands of eyes watched the standoff. The Commentator, for once, said nothing.
An IGF officer in an enforcement uniform moved with speed that blurred, chains materializing from mana-infused metal. They wrapped around Ryan’s arms and torso, locking him in place, the necromantic energy in his body suppressed by the chains’ enchantments.
Ryan didn’t resist. He just kept laughing.
He craned his neck toward the staffs’ stand, his laughing abruptly cutting off, and looked directly at a man sitting with the other vice principals. The man had dark energy swirling lazily around his hands, a passive aura of decay that made the air near him smell faintly of rot.

"What’s the meaning of this?" The IGF officer called out, looking towards the Vice Principal of Neon Abyss.
The Neon Abyss vice principal, a male with hollow cheeks and a calm smile leaned forward slightly.
"I’m sorry," he said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent stadium. "The captain has had quite a lot of mental stress."
A smile appeared on his face.
"I’m sure he just wanted to congratulate her."
A strong aura exploded from the staffs’ section. The temperature in the stadium dropped by ten degrees in an instant, and every person in the crowd felt the weight of power that had seen centuries of conflict.
VP Dubois stood, her teacup crumbling to powder in her grip.
"Do you think I joke with my students?" she said, her voice carrying across the entire colosseum without amplification. "Because the next time something like this happens, I will be taking your student’s head. Personally."
The Neon Abyss vice principal’s calm smile didn’t waver. He met her gaze evenly, which was either very brave or very stupid.
"I will expect nothing less from one of the Death Knights," he replied smoothly.
Dubois held his gaze for three more seconds. Then she sat back down.
The IGF officer dragged Ryan away. His manic laughter echoed through the corridors until a door closed and silenced it.
In the VIP section, Thalia Vorn watched Kael with a dark expression. Her fingers drummed slowly against the armrest of her seat.
He is going to be dangerous, she thought. He hides really well. We really understimated him. It’s better to eliminate him soon. Before he grows any further.
Three seats down, Marcus Vorn sat with his teeth gritted so hard his jaw ached. His nails dug into the armrests hard enough to leave gouges in the expensive wood.
Fuck. Fuck. This fucking bastard is way better than I thought. First place. He took his academy to first place. I better kill him soon. Before the family starts taking him seriously.
At the back of the VIP section, Blade No. 11 stood motionless against the wall, his masked face turned toward Kael’s position on the stage.
These kids are radiating quite the strong killing intent toward the sixth son. Their performance in this tournament has exceeded all projections. I better report this to the family head immediately.

The award ceremony proceeded.
Heaven’s Gate Academy was called to the center of the stage first. A trophy of crystallized mana shaped like a rising phoenix materialized on a pedestal, light refracting through its facets in a thousand colors. VP Dubois accepted it with both hands, her expression carefully neutral, though the corners of her mouth twitched upward.
The Commentator read the allocations. One million credits to each of Heaven’s Gate’s remaining students. Access to the IGF Library, fourth floor. A private training facility reservation for six months. Priority selection rights for any IGF-sponsored mission within the next year.
Cassian leaned close to Kael as the crowd applauded.
"The IGF Library is the real prize," he murmured. "More than seven floors, each restricted by cultivation and contribution points. The fourth floor contains techniques, records, and historical documents that most academies don’t even know exist. Even the third floor has techniques that would start wars between lesser academies."
Empyrean Celestial was called next. Five hundred thousand credits each. IGF Library third floor access. A private training facility reservation for four months. Standard mission selection rights. Their trophy was a crystallized wing, elegant and looked simple but it was anything but simple.
Astral Zenith followed. Two hundred thousand credits each. IGF Library third floor access. Reduced training facility reservation. Lesser mission selection rights. Their trophy was a crystallized sword.
Iron Nexus received one hundred thousand credits each. IGF Library third lower floor access, a distinct step down from the full third floor. Minimal training reservations. No trophy. The Commentator didn’t elaborate on why, but the silence from the Iron Nexus section spoke volumes.
Neon Abyss received fifty thousand credits each. Basic library access, second floor. No training facility. No trophy. No mission rights. The Commentator’s voice carried a carefully neutral tone that made the punishment obvious.
Individual awards followed. The top 19 students each received an IGF Invitation Badge, a small golden pin that granted access to IGF facilities and events normally restricted to official personnel. Additional rewards scaled by ranking. Kael received a King Grade technique voucher alongside his badge, redeemable for any single technique in the IGF’s public archives. Michael received the same, plus a personal commendation from the IGF Council.
Kael pinned the badge to his collar and pocketed the voucher without ceremony.
The celebration continued around him, but his mind had already moved on to the next challenge.
