Chapter 332: Chapter 332: Mighty Grandma
After Vera Xavier sent Mrs. Xavier off, she sat alone on the steps in front of the station, lost in thought. Seeing her mother today had brought back many memories from her past life. Chloe and Drew had actually inherited the honest, down-to-earth nature of the Xavier family. They might seem a bit mischievous now, but they were both kind and innocent. It was just that before she died in her past life, neither of them had been doing well.
Chloe and Drew’s grades had always been excellent, but the Xavier family was truly poor. One of them got into university but had to drop out for lack of money, while the other didn’t even take the college entrance exams.
Later on, Chloe married poorly. Her husband beat her daily, and her mother-in-law was vicious. She spent her days at home in tears.
Drew went south to find work, where an accident severed one of his arms. No girl was willing to marry him, and by the time Vera died in her past life, he was still single.
Vera Xavier let out a long sigh at these thoughts. In her past life, she hadn’t done anything for them. But in this life, making money wouldn’t be difficult for her. At the very least, she couldn’t let them be forced to drop out of school again.
Speaking of making money, she felt it was time to get things started.
So she went to discuss it with her grandmother. "Dad is being discharged tomorrow, but his rehabilitation will require more money. With all the household expenses, I want to go to the provincial capital to find a job and see if there are any opportunities to earn. While I’m away, I’ll need you and Grandpa to take care of Dad."
Her grandmother’s heart ached as she looked at Vera’s still-youthful face. "We still have some money at home. If things get really desperate, we can sell a few of the paintings and calligraphy scrolls. You really don’t have to work so hard."
Vera Xavier chuckled. "Grandma, I’m all grown up now. I can support this family. It’s just money, so don’t you worry. I’ll definitely earn lots and lots of it so you and Dad can live a comfortable life! I just might have to trouble you for a little while."
Her grandparents were just past seventy. While not young, they were still hale and hearty. Although half of Zachary Preston’s body was paralyzed, he fortunately wasn’t incontinent. He just needed to be turned regularly to prevent bedsores, and they had to pay attention to his diet.
His current condition wasn’t yet suitable for rehabilitation exercises, so caring for him wasn’t overly difficult.
Grandma reached out and tapped her on the nose. "I know you’ve always been strong-willed, so I won’t stop you. Just remember one thing: you must never do anything illegal."
Vera Xavier nodded. "I’m Dad’s daughter. Of course I’ll be a good, law-abiding citizen!"
Then she added in a low voice to her grandmother, "Cara Preston is still in the house. You have to be careful of her."
Grandma sneered. "Do you really think your grandma is a pushover? Her little tricks are child’s play to me! If she behaves herself, I’ll let her eat. But if she tries to stir up trouble under my roof again, I’ll beat that damn vixen to death in a heartbeat!"
Vera Xavier gave her grandmother a thumbs-up. "You’re incredible, Grandma!"
The grandmother and granddaughter burst into laughter together.
The next day, after Vera Xavier handled the discharge paperwork for Zachary Preston, she brought him home. The rooms in the house had already been rearranged in preparation.
Since Zachary Preston had limited mobility, Vera Xavier had cleared out and cleaned a side room on the first floor. She moved a bed down from upstairs, making it with a soft mattress pad and clean blankets. The room wasn’t large, but she had arranged it to be quite warm and cozy.
She had also bought a wheelchair, so when Zachary Preston felt cooped up, she could take him out for a walk.
Seeing Vera’s thoughtful arrangements filled her grandmother’s heart with warmth, but it also made her heart ache for the girl even more.
