Chapter 20: The Weakest Extra and the Strongest Final Boss

Seraphina kept her arms wrapped tightly around my waist, her head pressed heavily against my chest as if she was afraid I would vanish into thin air the second she let go.

"I told you I would come back," I said softly, reaching up with my free hand to gently pat her soft, crimson hair.

She didn’t speak. Instead, she just tightened her grip for a second, letting out a small, quiet sigh against my clothes.

"Come on," I whispered, gently tapping her shoulder. "Let’s go back to the Sunken Garden. It’s quiet there."

Slowly, she unclasped her hands from my waist, but she immediately slid her fingers into mine, locking them tightly together. Her hand was freezing cold, like holding a piece of solid ice, but I didn’t pull away. Well... I couldn’t, because of her firm grip.

Gradually, we began to walk through the long, quiet hallways of the Administrative Building, heading toward the back courtyard where the Sunken Garden was located.

As we walked, I found myself watching her. Really watching her.

After meeting her just a few days ago, I came to know that unlike the novel, she was blind, so I had never stopped to think about how she actually experienced the world around her.

She didn’t have normal sight, yet she moved with an eerie, absolute grace. She never bumped into the overturned chairs or stumbled over the shattered glass littered across the hallway.

Her blindness wasn’t a defect or a missing sense. It was just a completely different way of seeing reality.

I noticed how her head subtly tilted whenever we passed a lingering spell rune on the wall. She didn’t look at objects; she felt the energy they emitted.

When a faint breeze blew through a cracked window, carrying the metallic scent of blood and raw mana from outside, her ears twitched under her crimson hair, and her posture became instantly rigid.

She perceived the world as a vast map of energy, intentions, and emotions.

When a frightened staff member huddled in a doorway up ahead, Seraphina’s blindfolded face didn’t turn toward the person’s body. It turned toward their chest, right where their racing heart and spike of fear were radiating.

The moment the staff member felt her presence and froze in terror, I felt a small, sharp pulse of dark mana ripple from Seraphina’s skin.

She reacted to intent. She felt fear like a physical smell and hatred like a sudden rise in temperature. At least, that is what I came to realize after spending some time with her.

’So that’s how it works,’ I thought to myself, staring at the black cloth covering her eyes. ’She doesn’t see shapes or colors. She sees the ’darkness’ in everything. She sees the fabric of mana and human emotion.’

It was fascinating.

In a world full of mages who relied on visual spell circles and bright elemental lights, Seraphina was attuned to the quiet, hidden foundation of reality.

Her blindness wasn’t a flaw that made her vulnerable; it was the very reason she could control the world’s most terrifying power without getting distracted by illusions it created.

Soon, as we walked, we were able to reach the Sunken Garden.

The Sunken Garden had completely transformed since Seraphina had stabilized the Core. The ordinary roses and lily bushes were now covered in a thin, shimmering layer of black frost.

The central stone fountain no longer sprayed clear water; instead, a gentle stream of dark, glowing liquid flowed continuously, pooling into a glass-like basin that reflected the bruised violet sky above.

It was silent, isolated, and completely cut off from the rest of the chaotic academy because I wanted it to be.

We walked down the smooth stone steps into the heart of the garden where the weeping willow tree was standing tall. I sat down on the wide stone bench near the tree, placing theleather-bound Tome on the seat beside me.

The moment I sat down, Seraphina didn’t sit beside me.

Instead, she stepped right between my knees.

I blinked, looking up at her in mild confusion. "Seraphina?"

She didn’t answer with words. She usually never did unless she absolutely had to.

Slowly, she lowered herself, kneeling on the ground right between my legs. She placed her hands on my knees, then leaned her upper body forward, resting her head directly on my lap.

Her long, crimson hair spilled over my thighs like a heavy silk blanket, smelling faintly of sweet scent.

I froze for a second. ’What is she doing?’

To me, this felt entirely overwhelming. In my past life, I was just a regular guy who spent his time reading web novels and typing on a computer. I had never dealt with a girl being this physical, let alone a literal world-ending boss who could crush a mountain with a wave of her hand.

I knew she felt something deep for me, but my brain just treated it as a strange, high-stakes plot mechanic. In my eyes, she was my ultimate bodyguard, my shield against the void, and a deeply traumatized, overly attached monster girl I needed to keep happy so she wouldn’t blow up the planet.

I didn’t fully register the intense affection in her actions as ’romance.’ I just saw it as her unique, possessive nature.

"Are you uncomfortable on the floor?" I asked, my voice completely oblivious. "You can sit on the bench, you know."

Seraphina didn’t move. She just let out a soft, low hum from the back of her throat, a sound that vibrated against my legs. She shifted slightly, burying her face deeper into the fabric of my trousers, her black horns lightly resting against my stomach.

She took a deep breath, inhaling my scent, and I felt the tense, murderous energy that always lingered around her body completely melt away.

She wasn’t uncomfortable at all. To her, being right here, touching me, feeling my heartbeat and the warmth of my skin, was the only place in the entire world where she felt at peace.

Her blindness made her world a dark, chaotic void filled with screaming magic and ugly human emotions. But when she was near me, my presence was a quiet, steady anchor. I didn’t radiate fear or hatred toward her. I was just... Cian. A calm, steady light in her dark world.

I watched her quietly. I saw how her fingers lightly twitched against my knees, carefully avoiding scratching my clothes with her sharp, black-tipped nails. She was being so unbelievably gentle with me, even though she possessed enough power to tear a high demon to shreds.

Suddenly, her body went slightly stiff.

Her head snapped up from my lap, her blindfolded face tilting toward the high black crystal barrier surrounding the academy grounds.

Shift.

The dark mana in the garden began to tremble. Small, jagged shards of black ice started forming out of thin air around us, floating silently in the space beneath the willow tree. And the temperature in the garden plummeted instantly, making my breath turn into thick, white clouds.

She had felt something. A surge of chaotic energy from the city outside? Or perhaps the distant, intrusive whispers of the void trying to reach past her barrier again?

Whatever it was, it irritated her. Her lips pulled back into a small, dangerous sneer, and the dark aura around her flared violently.

’Dammit, not now,’ I thought, my heart skipping a beat. If she lost her temper right now, she might shatter the very barrier keeping us safe or accidentally kill half the students in the Great Hall.

I needed to calm her down immediately.

Without thinking too much about it, I reached out with both hands. I carefully slid my fingers into her soft crimson hair, wrapping my palms around the sides of her face, and gently pulled her head back down toward me.

"Seraphina," I whispered. "Look at me."

I know she couldn’t ’look’ at me with her eyes, but she understood what I meant.

I slowly leaned down, lowering my head until my forehead gently touched hers, right against the fabric of her silk blindfold.

The moment our foreheads pressed together, a small, visible shockwave of dark magic rippled out from her body, washing over the garden.

The floating black ice shards above us instantly dissolved into harmless black dust, scattering into the night air. The suffocating pressure in the garden vanished, and was replaced by a deep, heavy quiet.

Seraphina let out a long, shuddering breath.

Her hands moved from my knees, sliding up my chest to wrap around my neck, pulling me just a fraction closer so there was no space left between us. She tilted her face up slightly until her lips were resting just a breath away from my jaw.

"Cian..." she murmured, her voice soft, sweet, and entirely stripped of its dangerous, monstrous edge. "Outside... Cian..."

I held her face in my hands, feeling the rapid, erratic beat of her heart under my fingertips. I didn’t move away, but I also didn’t pull her any closer than necessary.

To me, this was just an effective tactic to manage her volatile mood. I had used my touch to ground her, to distract her from whatever external threat was bothering her, and it had worked perfectly.

"I’m right here," I said quietly, my thumb gently stroking the smooth skin of her cheek, right below her blindfold. "Nothing is going to touch us. Just stay calm."

She leaned into my hand, pressing her cheek firmly against my palm as if trying to feel my warmth.

For a few seconds, neither of us moved. I thought everything was finally over. Until, Seraphina suddenly moved and stood up.

"Seraphina?" Confuse, I asked.

Before I could understand what she was doing, she leaned forward, placing one hand on the back of the stone bench right beside my head, trapping me against the seat.

My breath hitched slightly. ’What is she doing now?’

Because of my height while sitting down, her face was slightly above mine. She paused for a moment, her blindfolded face tilted down, as if she was listening to the sudden, slight increase in my heartbeat.

Then, slowly, gracefully, she rose up onto her tippy toes.

She leaned her head sideways, bypassing my lips entirely, and gently pressed her soft lips directly against my left cheek.

’Huh?’

’HUH?!’

She had kissed me. Not my lips. But on my cheek.

Sitting there, with the literal Final Boss of the apocalypse rising on her tippy toes to gently kiss my cheek in a quiet garden... I had absolutely no idea how to react.

’...Was that some kind of monster bonding ritual? Or is she... wait, no.’

"Cian..." she whispered.

"M... m-mine."

It was just a simple and gentle touch. Yet somehow, the strongest being in this world looked more nervous than any human I had ever seen.

I stared at her silently. I didn’t know how to respond to this sudden turn of events... The events of ’this’?

"Cian...?" Seraphina tilted her head slightly.

"Uh, ah, I’m fine," I replied.

I had just completely failed to understand what had happened.
