Chapter 781: A Future Beyond the Visions

Chapter 780: A Future Beyond the Visions

12 Days To Go

Sophia had to admit she regretted doing that with Orion the previous night.

Though she had enjoyed it a lot.

And right now, he was massaging her body with warm oil to relieve the lingering soreness she felt.

Oh, who was she kidding?

She didn’t regret it at all.

She had enjoyed it, and she would likely do it all over again, enjoying every moment just as much. The memory of his hands on her, his voice in her ear, the way he had been so careful and so thorough—it sent a pleasant shiver down her spine even now.

She hummed softly as Orion’s hands moved to her lower legs, his thumbs pressing into the ache in her calves. The oil was warm and soothing, and his touch was firm enough to work out the tension but gentle enough to make her melt into the bed.

"That sound," Orion said, his voice rough with sleep and something else she recognized all too well, "is sending signals through my brain that you should be very careful about."

Sophia chuckled, turning her head to look at him over her shoulder.

"Don’t get any ideas. I’m going to have to train with Brynhild today, and I need to be in good shape. She’s going to destroy me if I show up exhausted."

He chuckled, his hands moving up to her lower back.

"It’ll be brutal. Brynhild isn’t going to go easy on you at all. She’s going to push you harder than I even push you."

"I know," Sophia said, her voice carrying a hint of resignation.

Orion’s hands stilled for a moment, and when he spoke, his voice was thoughtful.

"That will actually be the best thing for you. Just because you’re the Luna doesn’t mean she should go easy on you. If anything, she should push you harder."

Sophia was quiet for a moment, processing his words. Then she nodded slowly.

"You’re right."

He resumed his massage, his fingers working into the knots in her shoulders.

"That brings me to a question, though."

She tensed slightly beneath his hands.

"What is it?"

He was quiet for a moment, choosing his words carefully.

"After we get rid of the black magic still binding you to Victoria, perhaps you should try to control your powers and get more used to them."

Sophia remained silent, waiting for him to continue.

"I hate seeing you collapse every time you use them," he said, his voice low. "There must be a way you can control them. It can’t be that every time you use your gift, you end up unconscious or in the medical facility."

Sophia exhaled slowly, letting his words sink in. She had thought about this herself more times than she could count. The visions came to her unbidden, overwhelming her senses and leaving her drained and helpless. It wasn’t sustainable.

"I’ve had the same thought," she admitted. "I plan to go to the goddess later, perhaps after the black magic binding me to Victoria has been dealt with. I need to know more about these powers I hold, after all. I need to understand them, to control them. And also..." She paused, her voice dropping slightly. "I want a way to put all of this to an end once and for all."

Orion frowned, his hands coming to a stop on her back.

"What do you mean?"

"If killing Victoria isn’t going to be the end of it, then I must know," she told him. "If there’s something else we must do too, I want to know. Because I really want this to end once and for all. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder, waiting for the next threat to emerge."

Orion was quiet for a long moment before he nodded slowly.

"I really do hope that everything ends," he said. "But yes... I understand you. I understand why you need to know."

"There’s also something else," Sophia told him. "Something I noticed about my visions."

"Go ahead and say it, shorty," he told her.

"I was going to, you oaf," she said in reply.

She paused before speaking again.

"Normally, in my visions, I’m the one who kills you." Her voice was soft. "One way or another, it’s always my fault. I’m always the reason you die."

Orion’s hands stilled, but he didn’t interrupt.

"But the last vision I had was different. I wasn’t the one who did it. It wasn’t my fault... at least according to you. You didn’t look at me like I was some traitor. Instead, you told me not to blame myself."

"Maybe the vision changed? There must be something we did that caused it to change," Orion said.

"I think so too."

"But, shorty," he called softly, "I don’t think I would ever blame you for anything that may have happened."

Sophia was quiet.

Truly, the Orion of now didn’t look like he would blame her for what might or might not happen. But she had seen it in her visions. Everyone dying... and she hated it.

"Maybe not now, but..."

Sophia couldn’t finish her words because the next thing she knew, she was sitting on Orion’s lap, her eyes locked on his.

"Shorty," he called softly. "I don’t want to say your vision is wrong. I really don’t. But do I seem like I would blame you for something that’s obviously beyond your control?"

"Maybe not now," Sophia argued. "But maybe you would have. You didn’t trust me at the beginning, Orion. That is the truth."

Orion groaned, then buried his head in the crook of her neck.

"It’s not going to happen, though," Sophia said as her fingers brushed through the strands of his hair. "We are trying everything in our power to make sure it doesn’t happen, after all."

Orion didn’t say anything in reply.

But one thing he was certain of was that he would never blame her for something that wasn’t her fault.

For something she could not control.
