Chapter 83: My Odesse. Mine.

The morning sun broke through the heavy curtains of the bedchamber, casting long, golden streaks across the wooden floorboards. Odesse stirred slowly, the deep exhaustion of her week-long journey still lingering in her muscles, but as her eyes opened, the familiar carvings of the room brought a sudden wave of reality. She was truly home.

The door creaked open softly, and Cara stepped inside, carrying a small steaming ceramic cup. A warm, quiet smile broke across her face when she saw Odesse sitting up.

"I figured you’d be awake," Cara said softly, walking over to set the cup on the small bedside table. "I brought you some mint tea. It’s not quite the exotic spices of that place you described, but I hoped it would make you feel grounded."

Odesse reached out, wrapping her hands around the warm clay, letting the herbal steam clear the last remnants of sleep from her mind. "It’s perfect, Cara. Thank you." She took a slow sip, looking out the window as the palace outside began to wake up. "How is the atmosphere downstairs this morning?"

Cara sighed, leaning against the bedpost. "Tense. Azure hasn’t left her quarters since last night, and the guards are whispering. Nobody really knows what to expect, but the servants are holding their heads a little higher today because you’re here."

Before Odesse could reply, a firm, disciplined knock echoed against the heavy wooden door. Cara moved to open it, stepping back respectfully as Kael walked into the room. He wore his full commander’s armor, his expression composed, though his eyes held a distinct warmth when he looked at Odesse.

"Good morning, Your Highness," Kael said, bowing his head slightly.

"Good morning, Kael," Odesse replied, setting her cup down. "I assume the King is awake?"

Kael nodded, his tone dropping into a lower, more serious register. "Yes. His Highness is currently waiting for you in the private solar. He requested your presence as soon as you were ready. He... he spent most of the morning staring out the window, Your Highness. He is confused, but he wants answers."

Odesse felt her heart tighten with a mix of anticipation and nerves, but she forced her posture to straighten. She looked up at Kael with a resolute expression.

"Tell him I am on my way," Odesse said smoothly, sliding her legs out of the bed. "I just need a few moments to get ready and dress appropriately. I won’t keep my king waiting."

Kael bowed once more, a supportive smile playing on his lips. "Take your time, Your Highness. I will inform him." He turned and stepped out of the chamber, closing the door quietly behind him, leaving Odesse and Cara to prepare for the confrontation ahead.

...

Valex stood motionless by the towering arched window, his massive silhouette cutting through the bright morning light that flooded the room. His hands were clasped tightly behind his back, his jaw set in a hard, rigid line. Outwardly, he looked every bit the unyielding Alpha King, but beneath his stoic posture, his mind was a chaotic storm.

"Who is she?" the question beat relentlessly against his skull. "For three days, my mind had been haunted by a nameless dancer, a silver-haired ghost who had unraveled my senses with a single touch. Now, she is here, sleeping under my roof, claiming a crown I believed belonged to someone else."

He remembered the raw terror in Azure’s voice last night, the defiant loyalty of Kael, and the tears of old Miss Faye. The pieces of his reality were violently crashing against one another, and the sheer frustration of not knowing his own mind made his chest ache with a dull, hollow pain.

A soft, hesitant knock broke the quiet of the solar.

Valex didn’t turn around immediately. He took a slow, deep breath, centering his voice. "Come in."

The heavy door groaned on its hinges as it opened. Odesse stepped into the room, her posture delicate but entirely poised. She wore a simple, elegant gown of soft blue, her long silver hair braided neatly down her back, catching the morning sun like woven starlight. Outside the threshold, Cara offered her a final, supportive nod before pulling the door closed, leaving the King and Queen completely alone.

Valex turned his head slowly, his piercing gaze locking onto her the moment she entered his space. His heart gave a violent, sudden thud—a sharp, warm spike of familiarity that bypassed his clouded memory entirely and struck straight at his instincts.

Odesse met his stare, her eyes shining with a profound, aching affection that she carefully kept under control. She didn’t rush him. She didn’t scream or cry. Instead, she walked with practiced, regal grace toward the plush velvet couch in the center of the room, smoothing her skirts as she sat down slowly, keeping her eyes fixed on him the entire time.

Valex watched her every movement, his green eyes scanning her face as if searching for a hidden truth written in her features. Driven by an overwhelming urge to be closer, he finally broke his rigid stance. He walked over to the seating area, his heavy footsteps echoing softly on the stone floor, and lowered himself onto the opposite side of the couch.

He sat forward, resting his forearms on his knees, his hands loosely clasped as he looked at her. The silence stretched between them for a long, heavy moment before Valex finally spoke, his deep voice carrying a trace of raw exhaustion.

"Who exactly are you?," he murmured, his eyes searching hers.

Odesse offered him a soft, knowing smile. "Is that any way to welcome me, my king? Did you not miss me at all?"

Confusion pulled at Valex’s features, his brow furrowing deeply. "That is not what I asked you," he demanded, his voice dropping into a stern, unyielding register. "Answer me."

Without a word, Odesse stood up slowly from the couch. Valex’s gaze tracked her as she crossed the small space between them and sat down beside him, leaving just a sliver of space between their bodies. She turned her head, her calm demeanor entirely unbothered by his hostility.

"My king," she whispered softly, her eyes searching his. "Your eyes..."

Slowly, deliberately, she raised her hand and placed her palm against his jawline. At the touch, a sudden wave of genuine warmth flooded Valex’s senses, momentarily dulling the constant, numbing fog in his mind. As she gently caressed his cheek, the dominant green hue in his irises began to fracture, allowing the natural, brilliant amber of his true alpha nature to surge toward the surface. They stared deep into each other’s eyes, the silent air between them thick with a sudden, suffocating intensity.

Panicking at the sudden loss of control, Valex abruptly stood up and wrenched himself backward, breaking her hold. In a violent flash, the amber vanished, and the spell-induced green locked back into place.

"What is the meaning of this?" Valex demanded, his breathing slightly elevated as he pointed an accusing finger. "Who sent you here?"

Odesse stood up to match him, taking a few measured steps closer. "Do not worry yourself with thoughts of an assassination, my king. And do not think you will be able to rid yourself of me so easily. I am here with the High Chief’s explicit permission. And as you clearly saw last night, every soul in this palace already acknowledges who I am."

Valex’s eyes widened in genuine shock, his defensive posture slipping. "What do you mean the High Chief gave you permission? He is aware of your presence?"

Instead of answering directly, Odesse subtly raised her left hand, twisting her fingers so the morning light caught the precise, ancient engravings of the heavy silver band. She looked down at it with immense tenderness. "This ring right here, my king... is the ultimate witness to our sacred vow."

Valex stared at her hand, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "How do you possess the royal ring?"

Odesse tilted her head, a brilliant, confident smirk playing on her lips. "Because you placed it on my finger yourself, on the day of our wedding."

Valex took a half-step back, shaking his head as a quiet, frantic murmur escaped his lips. "No... no, that’s impossible."

"Tell me," Odesse countered softly, her voice cool and steady. "Have you ever once seen a royal ring on Azure’s finger?"

The question hit Valex like a physical blow. His eyes shot wide open, staring blankly ahead as Odesse turned away, moving gracefully back toward the velvet couch. She sat down, casually crossing one elegant leg over the other, resting her back against the cushions as she watched him unravel.

Valex stood frozen in the center of the room, his mind spinning into chaotic fragments. "I have never seen Azure wear that ring," he realized, a cold dread washing over his chest. "How is that possible? Why don’t I remember anything about our ceremony?" Desperate to steady his erratic breathing, he closed his eyes tightly, forcing himself to dig into the dark, locked corners of his mind. Suddenly, a violent jolt of memory shot through his consciousness. He saw a massive, grand celebration—a wedding feast. He was standing in the center of a crowded ballroom, slow-dancing in perfect synchronization with a woman. Though her facial features remained completely blurred and distorted by the fog, she possessed long, striking silver hair, and the memory of her warm embrace sent a fierce, aching heat straight through his heart.

He snapped his eyes open, his gaze instantly locking onto Odesse, who sat quietly on the couch, surveying the room with a serene smile.

"Is she truly the one?" Valex thought, his chest tightening with an agonizing mixture of hope and fear. "Is she Odesse... who is she, and how can I blindly trust her word? Why should I believe these strangers over my own wife, Azure? No... there must be a reason I cannot recall my wedding with Azure. But the missing pieces don’t make sense.

Steeling his resolve, he marched over and stood directly in front of her, casting a tall shadow over her lap. "A single piece of jewelry is no reason for me to believe you," he said coldly, trying to reclaim his authority. "I do not think you understand who holds the power in this palace. You are delusional if you think you can simply walk in here and claim a throne."

Odesse stood up slowly, deliberately closing the final pocket of air between them until her chest nearly brushed his tunic. She looked up, her eyes locking his green gaze in place, completely unfazed by his height or his commanding tone.

"Which is exactly why," she murmured, her voice dropping into a low, entirely captivating cadence, "I am the only woman alive who can make the Alpha King bow."

Before he could process her words, she raised her arms and wrapped them securely around the nape of his neck. "You have absolutely no idea how patiently I have waited for this moment," she whispered.

With a firm, unyielding pressure, she pulled his head down and pressed her lips tightly against his. Valex’s eyes flew wide open in absolute shock, staring at her closed eyelids as the world around him seemed to stop entirely. "What is she doing?" his mind screamed, his instincts warring violently against his brainwashing. "Why can’t I pull away from her? Why does every molecule of my body refuse to reject this?"

Unconsciously, his rigid discipline shattered. His hands moved on their own accord, dropping to her waist and gripping her securely, pulling her flush against his massive frame.

Odesse parted from the kiss slightly, looking up at him with a breathtaking, radiant smile. "I know you missed me, my king," she breathed against his skin.

She brought her hands up to frame his face, her fingers caressing his jaw with pure, maternal tenderness. The raw warmth of her touch completely severed the remaining threads of his hesitation. Unable to fight the primal pull of the mate bond any longer, Valex buried his face in her shoulder and pulled her back in, burying his lips against hers in a deep, desperate, and possessive kiss.

As the world outside the windows faded into absolute background noise, a single, definitive truth broke through the green fog of his mind, anchoring itself to his soul "Odesse. My Odesse. Mine."
