Chapter 103: Puppets On My Stage

The morning that broke over the Moonlight Pack carried a deceptive tranquility. The crisp dawn sun painted the sky in brilliant shades of blue, and the carefree melody of songbirds echoed through the courtyard. Yet, inside the palace walls, the air remained ghost-thick with the lingering residue of the curse, a heavy pressure that had only slightly eased with the passing of the night cycle.

Odesse sat rigidly before her vanity mirror, her heart hammering a fractured rhythm against her ribs. Her face in the glass was starkly pale, and her fingers felt unnaturally stiff—the literal physical toll of carrying Azure’s dark magic in her veins. Beside her, a trusted female servant worked with hurried, trembling hands, applying layers of heavy cosmetics to mask the Queen’s fading color.

"Your highness..." the servant whispered, her voice laced with quiet anxiety as she dusted the final layer of powder over Odesse’s cheekbones. "Is this enough?"

Odesse turned her head slightly, tilting her face toward the morning light to inspect the reflection. Every trace of the midnight trauma had been expertly buried beneath the makeup; there was no visible sign of weakness, no shadow of the agonizing pain currently throbbing beneath her skin.

Looking at the servant through the glass, she whispered, "Yes, that is enough."

The servant stepped back respectfully, allowing Odesse to stand up with slow, deliberate care. "You may leave now," Odesse instructed. Bowing slightly, the servant gathered the cosmetics from the table, made her way toward the exit, and quietly closed the door behind her.

Left alone, Odesse immediately looked down at her wrist. With a sharp, deliberate tug, she dragged her silk sleeves downward, completely concealing the raw, weeping mark of the transferred curse. She adjusted her hair, forcing a warm, flawless smile into the empty mirror. I wonder if Azure was able to detect that the curse was diverted, she thought, her mind racing.

Walking out onto the private stone balcony, Odesse looked down at the courtyard below. Sentinels marched their routes and servants went about their daily duties, entirely oblivious to the cosmic executioner hanging over their heads.

Yesterday was only the first night, Odesse thought, her hands tightening into tight fists against the stone balustrade. But I shall not let this nightmare reach seven days. I have to find a way to make Azure break the curse herself. I need to end this nonsense once and for all.

As she watched the courtyard, her fingers began to tremble from the internal strain of the spell. Control yourself, she commanded her own body, pressing her hands flat against the cold stone. I cannot let Azure see me weak or shaken. I have to find a way to get rid of her.

Her eyes darted restlessly across the busy grounds until they landed on an elderly woman carrying a basket of linen. The sight of the elder snapped a missing puzzle piece into place, dragging a vital memory to the forefront of her mind. Azure’s monologue from yesterday... the historical library. The one accessible only to royal teachers. That is what she said. And the only one who can grant absolute permission to cross that threshold is the High Chief.

Odesse spun away from the balcony, a finger pressing hard against her lip as her thoughts caught fire. If I can get permission from the High Chief to enter the library, what exactly am I going to search for? Suddenly, a wave of agonizing, white-hot pressure ripped through her skull. Odesse let out a soft, ragged sigh of pain, staggering back into the bedchamber. She collapsed heavily onto the edge of the mattress, pressing her palms against her temples as the room spun. I cannot keep wasting time like this, she thought desperately, forcing herself to sit upright. But his highness explicitly told me not to do anything stressful.

She looked down at her royal dress, her stiff fingers tightening into the fine fabric. If I do not stress myself now, Azure will live in absolute peace, and I will not allow that. Defying the weakness in her limbs, Odesse stood up from the bed. I need to go see the High Chief immediately. But I must make sure Azure does not catch me leaving.

Sliding past the threshold, Odesse opened the palace door and closed it slowly behind her, leaving the royal bedchamber completely warm, quiet, and empty.

Meanwhile, in the private bathchamber of the palace, a completely different atmosphere prevailed. The heavy, intoxicating fragrance of Azure’s signature perfume filled the dimly lit room, mixing with thick plumes of steam curling lazily toward the ceiling. Azure lay reclined in the deep water, her head resting back against the marble ledge, her eyes closed in blissful satisfaction.

She opened her eyes slowly, a wide, bright smile spreading across her face. "Things are going exactly as I have planned," she purred to the empty room. "My story is going entirely my way, and the characters are playing their parts perfectly."

A loud, maniacal laugh erupted from her throat, echoing off the damp tiles. "Odesse has still not given Valex over, and a Hisponian has already lost their life. Valex is totally useless on this field of battle. That menacing little girl Cara is still rotting in her bed. Kael’s mouth is finally shut, and the Hispo soldiers are entirely under my thumb."

Azure sighed, a deep wave of relief washing over her as the remaining tension dissolved from her shoulders. Her smile twisted into something far more sinister. "Odesse, do you really think I even want Valex anymore?" She giggled, shaking her head against the marble. "No, no, no! Valex isn’t my priority anymore. My priority is to watch you suffer as you scramble to break a curse that only I can undo."

She traced a manicured finger across her forehead, her eyes gleaming with dark amusement. "Even if you handed Valex over today, that curse would still remain exactly as it is. Because what is the fun in a game if there is no deception?" Sliding her hand down to touch her throat gently, her smirk widened. "All of you are just my little puppets, this world is my stage, and I hold the ropes to control everything."

She took a deep, lingering breath of the perfumed steam. "I cannot wait for tonight. Another innocent life will be snuffed out while Odesse is still trying to find a way to destroy the spell. She will eventually give up and hand Valex to me on her knees."

Azure paused mid-laugh, her face instantly going completely flat and serious. "No... Odesse isn’t the type to give up easily, especially when it involves Valex. I shouldn’t underestimate her. But if she dares try to bend my story, I will overpower her. Like always."

Miles away from the Moonlight Pack, the steady, rhythmic rumbling of a royal carriage cut through the quiet forest tracks. Inside, Odesse sat in total isolation, her face pale and drawn with anxiety as the landscape blurred past the window.

When the High Chief asks me what I need permission to do in the restricted library, what do I tell him? she thought, her stomach twisting into knots. She bit down nervously on a pale, numb finger. Do I just tell him the truth? What am I even going to look for in there? What plan do I actually have?

Her grip tightened on her dress until her knuckles turned white. Was this a mistake? I didn’t even inform his highness about my whereabouts before running off. She stared out the window as the cold wind whipped against the carriage frame, whispering a fierce, quiet reassurance to herself. "No. This isn’t a mistake. I shall tell the High Chief everything. I am very sure he will understand."

She compressed her lips into a thin, determined line as the carriage pressed onward in a steady, unyielding movement.

After hours of a grueling, silent journey, the carriage finally came to a halt within the formidable territory of the Apex Pack.

Moments later, Odesse stood in the grand, echoing expanse of the throne room. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she looked up at the High Chief, who sat completely motionless upon his elevated throne, his features entirely concealed behind his traditional, imposing mask.

Swallowing the lump of anxiety in her throat, Odesse bowed exceptionally low. "Greetings, High Chief."

The High Chief’s voice cut through the silence, soft yet carrying an immense, underlying weight. "Odesse. To what do I owe this unexpected visit?"

Odesse wrung her stiff hands together, her foot tapping the grand stone floor in a subtle, nervous rhythm. She hesitated for a fraction of a second before forcing the words out. "Well... High Chief, I have come to ask for your absolute permission to enter the royal library."

The High Chief tilted his masked head slightly, a silent demand for explanation.

Out of sheer nervousness, Odesse quickly added, "I know you must be wondering what I need to do in a place restricted to the royal teachers..."

The High Chief didn’t answer immediately. Instead, his head turned slowly, scanning the perimeter of the grand room, his hidden gaze lingering on the armored guards stationed at every corner. Without a word, he stood up from his throne, his presence completely unwavering. Odesse stood up instantly as well, her anxiety spiking in the quiet air.

The High Chief walked down the dais, passing her by a step. "Walk with me, Odesse."

Bowing her head slightly, Odesse fell into step just behind him. They exited the grand throne room, leaving the guards behind as they transitioned into a dimly lit, private hallway.

Breaking the heavy quiet, the High Chief spoke smoothly. "I do know the reason why you need to go into the royal library."

Odesse’s eyes opened in total shock, her footsteps faltering. "You do?"

The High Chief paused, turning his masked face sharply toward her. "Yes, I do, Odesse." He turned back to the front, maintaining his steady pace down the corridor as Odesse scrambled to follow. "You have my full permission to enter the royal library. Before you leave the Apex Pack today, you shall receive my official letter of confirmation."

A profound wave of gladness washed over Odesse, a bright, genuine smile breaking through her carefully constructed composure. "Thank you, High Chief. Thank you."

The High Chief merely nodded slowly, continuing their march through the labyrinthine palace. They climbed a grand, winding set of stone stairs in complete silence, Odesse keeping close behind his trailing robes. As they reached a secluded bend in the upper level, the High Chief came to an abrupt halt in front of a heavy, unmarked door.

He turned his entire body to face her. Odesse looked from his mask to the mysterious door, her breath catching in her throat as the High Chief spoke in a low, resonant tone.

"I want to show you something, Odesse."
