Chapter 2008: Chapter 2008: I Have Met the Deputy Head Escort
Coincidentally, Meng Pei currently has nothing much to do; he was merely a namesake at the escort agency in Jiangyuan County, occasionally taking on a task, with wages based on his assignments.
After realizing that Chenggu County might not be safe, he hurried back to his hometown and informed the escort agency that he might not be able to return shortly, thus resigning for the time being.
Now that everything at the Quansheng Escort Agency has been renovated, he stayed for a while, reminiscing about the times when Song Xin was still around, feeling a bit reluctant.
These days, he feels particularly at ease, always sensing that Song Xin seems to be still accompanying him.
He plans to continue living there while investigating the person who initially recruited the Three-Liars.
Regrettably, there are still no clues; perhaps the person is no longer in Huajiang Prefecture.
In conversation, Meng Pei led a few people to the guest courtyard, asking, "Do you have any plans for your visit here? If not, I can take you for a stroll around."
Shu Yu pointed at Ying Dong and Ying Xi, "They will go up the mountain tomorrow to pay respects to their parents. Ah Rui and the others can play on their own. I’ll wander around. If there’s nothing else here, we’ll depart for Dongan Province in two days."
Meng Pei nodded in response, patting Ying Dong’s shoulder, "It’s good to visit your parents. During Qingming, I went with some of the elders from the former escort agency to visit them, burnt paper offerings, and poured wine."
Talking about this matter left him somewhat melancholy, "On returning this time, I met with the former escorts, though some are already gone. Either they’ve left Tianning County or... they’re no longer with us."
The escort profession, when untroubled, is fine, but once trouble arises, it becomes a highly dangerous occupation. After more than a decade, not many still remain in this line of work.
Meng Pei took a deep breath, raising his head and smiling, "A while ago, when several of us met, we talked about you kids, reminiscing on how you and Yun were the sharpest, full of mischievous ideas, sometimes so much so that you were especially annoying."
Ying Dong, feeling a bit embarrassed, joined in the laughter. Sadly, those carefree days of yesteryears will never return.
"Are the elders still in good health?"
"They’re doing well."
Ying Dong nodded, "By the way, I saw Uncle Lin this morning; have you met him?"
Meng Pei paused, the hand on Ying Dong’s shoulder stiffened, frowning and asking, "The Uncle Lin you mention is..."
"It’s Deputy Head Escort."
Meng Pei’s expression changed, his brows furrowing further, "Are you sure the person you saw was Deputy Head Escort Lin Yong?"
Ying Dong was puzzled at his suddenly strange expression, but after a moment’s thought, he still nodded, "It should be him, although he looks quite different now from before. At first glance, I thought I was mistaken, but it seemed too familiar, so I gave him a few more looks. He noticed me, too, but quickly averted his gaze. I have a gut feeling he recognized me."
Unlike Ying Xi, Ying Dong and Deputy Head Escort Lin shared a very close relationship.
After the birth of his sister, most of Mother’s attention was focused on her, and Father, to make ends meet, began taking on more assignments.
The young Ying Dong inevitably felt neglected, particularly when he saw that Uncle Meng and Aunt Meng had only one child, his best friend Meng Yunzheng, which made his feeling of loss even more pronounced.
