Chapter 66: Chapter 34: First Time Calling Her Darling
She could have endured it, of course, but seeing the worried look on Shen Yanzhi’s face, Jiang Li suddenly felt the urge to be a little willful.
With tears welling in her eyes, she looked plaintively at the screen. "It hurts a lot."
Shen Yanzhi’s brow furrowed even deeper. He left her with a single sentence, "I’m coming over right now," and hung up.
Zhong Mufeng, who had witnessed the whole thing from the side, gave her a thumbs-up. "I never knew you had such a manipulative streak."
Jiang Li tossed her hair. "There’s a lot you don’t know about me!"
To put it bluntly, it was manipulative.
To put it nicely, she was just being coquettish.
But Shen Yanzhi’s reaction told her that her ploy had worked.
The worry in his eyes wasn’t faked; he was genuinely anxious and worked up.
And sure enough, less than fifteen minutes after Shen Yanzhi had hung up, he materialized in front of Jiang Li, carrying a first-aid kit.
He knelt before Jiang Li and, before she could even react, heedlessly pulled off her shoes.
The shoes must not have fit well, because the skin on her heels was rubbed raw and even oozing blood.
Seeing this, Shen Yanzhi’s brow furrowed so deeply you could have crushed a fly between them.
As he opened the first-aid kit, he gently began to disinfect her scrapes, his eyes filled with heartache.
But he couldn’t bring himself to say much. After all, Jiang Li had only come to help Zhong Mufeng, and Zhong Mufeng hadn’t wanted Jiang Li to get hurt either.
Feeling a slight tickle on her foot, Jiang Li instinctively pulled it back.
The next second, Shen Yanzhi caught it in his hand. The contact of their hot skin made Jiang Li blush.
To ease the awkwardness, Jiang Li asked, "How did you get here so fast?"
Zhong Mufeng, who had been part of the background until now, chimed in at the perfect moment. "Why else? He was probably worried about you and floored it the whole way here."
Shen Yanzhi’s hand paused as he applied the ointment. He didn’t refute it, but instead asked, "Did you bring slippers?"
Jiang Li froze, a flicker of disappointment in her eyes. "No."
Even though what Zhong Mufeng said was probably true, she would have felt so much better if Shen Yanzhi had just confirmed it with a simple "yes."
But Shen Yanzhi said nothing at all.
He quickly finished treating the wound and applied a bandage. "Then wait here for me for a bit."
As he stood up, he stumbled slightly.
Once Shen Yanzhi left, Zhong Mufeng crossed her arms and leaned against the vanity. "What’s wrong? Upset that your dear Shen didn’t admit it?"
Jiang Li pouted. Zhong Mufeng continued, "I don’t know where he came from, but for him to get here in about ten minutes, he must have been worried about you!"
Jiang Li replied while wiping her face with a makeup remover wipe, "That may be true, but I just want to hear him say it himself."
Zhong Mufeng shook her head and sighed. "No wonder they say women in love like to be unreasonable. There’s some truth to it."
’It’s a good thing I’m not in a relationship, or I’d probably be just as irrational as Jiang Li.’
’But I can understand it.’
This was, after all, the man she’d loved for years, and now they were married.
When you’re unsure if the other person loves you back, you’re bound to feel insecure. You’ll try to find any little piece of evidence that proves you’re important to him.
Jiang Li pressed her lips together. "Are you still my best friend or not?"
Zhong Mufeng raised her hands in surrender. "I may be your best friend, but on this one, I’m siding with your Shen."
"He’s not a man of many words to begin with. He’s already shown you with his actions, yet you insist on hearing him say it out loud."
Since Shen Yanzhi hadn’t denied what she’d said earlier, it meant she was right. But Jiang Li just had to get hung up on this one point.
Jiang Li sighed helplessly. "I know you’re right, but I’m still unhappy."
Zhong Mufeng uncrossed her arms, walked over to the tea station to get a cup of warm water, and walked back to hand it to Jiang Li. "Alright, don’t be upset anymore. Didn’t he just go out to buy you slippers? Isn’t that enough to prove he cares about you?"
Jiang Li took the cup. After hearing what Zhong Mufeng said, her mood gradually improved.
She took a sip of water and asked, a little embarrassed, "Do you think I’m being really unreasonable?"
Zhong Mufeng replied in a deadpan voice, "You are being a little unreasonable, but since I’m the one dealing with it, it’s manageable."
’But if it were anyone else, I would have chewed them out already.’
’It’s okay to be unreasonable sometimes, but you have to know when to stop. And being unreasonable isn’t just a woman’s prerogative.’
Just as Jiang Li was about to protest, Zhong Mufeng spoke again. "Your Shen doesn’t seem like someone who doesn’t have you in his heart. Why don’t you just lay it all out and talk to him sometime?"
"You two are going to spend the rest of your lives together, after all. It’s better to get things out in the open sooner rather than later. It’ll be good for you, for him, and for your marriage."
