Chapter 182: Chapter 182: The Zombies Retreated
It’s always what you worry about most that happens.
The zombies, which had been motionless just moments before, suddenly sprang to life as if they’d all received some silent command.
Sierra Sullivan had seen her fair share of zombies before, but those ones had been slow and clumsy.
Aside from their disgusting and terrifying appearance, they were relatively easy to deal with.
Especially for Superpower Users like them.
But the movements of these zombies shattered Sierra Sullivan’s perception of them.
They were fast, with incredibly quick reactions.
It seemed they could execute a command the instant they received it.
Watching these zombies lunge toward her, Sierra Sullivan felt a flicker of shock.
But it was just a flicker.
Sierra Sullivan quickly pushed the shock to the back of her mind.
’Rather than waste time being shocked, I’d better just deal with these zombies.’
That was what Sierra Sullivan thought, and it was exactly what she did.
She didn’t bother warning the others; they didn’t need it.
As fellow Superpower Users who had survived this long in the apocalypse and frequently went on missions outside the base, reacting to sudden situations was everyone’s instinct.
If you still needed someone to warn you at a time like this before you could react, you wouldn’t survive long in the apocalypse anyway.
Although these zombies were fast, and some even had Superpowers, they were just strenuous to fight, not impossible to defeat.
While fighting them, Sierra Sullivan also observed them carefully.
’They’re even coordinating with each other.’
It was obvious they were being controlled.
And the zombies just kept coming.
As soon as the ones in front were killed, new ones would quickly take their place.
Sierra Sullivan didn’t know how many more zombies there were.
But she knew that if they didn’t find and eliminate the ’brain’ hiding behind the scenes, the zombies would be endless.
Right now, it looked like they had the upper hand.
But Superpowers get depleted.
Once their Superpowers were heavily drained, their stamina and powers would fail. Facing an endless horde of zombies then, they would be the ones to get hurt!
As these thoughts ran through Sierra Sullivan’s mind, she couldn’t help but feel a little anxious.
But at a time like this, anxiety wouldn’t solve anything.
The zombies kept coming. No matter how anxious Sierra Sullivan felt, she could only focus on dealing with the ones right in front of her.
Just when Sierra Sullivan had lost count of how many zombies she’d killed, with corpses piled high at her feet, the remaining ones suddenly changed direction.
Instead of continuing their relentless charge, they turned and fled.
Visibility was already low, and they were incredibly fast.
In the blink of an eye, with just a couple of leaps, they vanished completely from the sight of Sierra Sullivan and the others.
Watching the zombies appear and disappear so suddenly, Sierra Sullivan didn’t feel a sense of relief. Instead, her heart grew even heavier than before.
’Who knew if these zombies were just pretending to retreat? They could be hiding in the shadows right now, waiting for us to let our guard down before striking a fatal blow.’
Though her mind was on high alert, the situation didn’t allow Sierra Sullivan much time to think.
"Sierra, are you okay?" Jayce asked with concern as he walked up to Sierra Sullivan’s side.
"Don’t worry, I’m fine!" Sierra Sullivan replied immediately. "Go check on the others in the back. If everyone’s okay, we need to keep moving. We can’t waste too much time here."
"Okay!"
Jayce agreed and immediately headed to the back.
A short while later, Jayce came walking back quickly.
"Two people are injured, but it’s nothing serious. Nathan Thorne gave them some basic treatment. We’re ready to move out!"
Hearing that two people were injured, Sierra Sullivan’s brow furrowed instinctively.
’So, we couldn’t avoid injuries after all.’
Not everyone on the team was at the same level of strength.
Some had weaker Superpowers, so in such a harsh environment and against so many zombies, getting injured was understandable.
’As long as it’s not a major problem, it’s fine!’
The group started moving again, this time with even more caution and at a slower pace.
They not only had to find their way, but also remain vigilant of their surroundings at all times.
Fortunately, their luck was good.
After a dozen or so minutes, they actually found their vehicle.
The moment she touched the vehicle, Sierra Sullivan nearly burst into tears of joy.
’God knows how difficult this journey has been!’
Before getting in, Jayce and Dominic Crawford circled the vehicle once.
They had to make sure there were no problems with the vehicle’s exterior or its tires.
Otherwise, if the vehicle couldn’t be driven, they’d just have to get out again.
And a good thing they checked, because they actually found a problem.
Two of the tires were punctured.
Although they hadn’t completely deflated, they definitely wouldn’t get far.
Looking at the punctures, it seemed like something had gnawed on them, leaving deep teeth marks.
But it was impossible to determine what kind of animal had done it.
Animals had all mutated now; creatures that never had teeth before could grow them. Who knew what kind of mutated animal had chewed on the tires.
But that wasn’t important.
To handle this kind of emergency, Sierra Sullivan’s space was stocked with all sorts of spare parts and repair tools.
Every one of them, including Sierra Sullivan herself, had specifically learned various car repair skills.
The apocalypse was different from before; there weren’t repair shops on every corner.
If their vehicle had any problems outside the base, they could only rely on themselves.
So, it was necessary for everyone to learn these skills, just in case.
Although they had learned them, they hadn’t had to use them until now.
Well, now was the time to use them!
While a few people stood guard, Jayce and Dominic Crawford worked together to change the tires.
As for the old ones, Sierra Sullivan stored them in her space. They would figure out how to patch them up after returning to the base.
In the apocalypse, one had to be extremely frugal with non-renewable resources. Nothing could be wasted.
After a good half-hour of work, they finally finished changing the tires, and the group boarded the vehicle.
The door opened, people got in, and the sand and wind blew in with them.
They had to wait for quite a while before the sand settled inside the vehicle.
Only then did everyone remove their layers of protective gear, letting their heads out for a breath of fresh air.
They had been wrapped up so tightly that everyone now had deep indentations on their faces.
Not only that, but sweat mixed with the sand that had gotten in was stuck to their faces, making them look both pathetic and comical.
Everyone looked at each other, and it’s unclear who started laughing first, but soon they were all roaring with laughter, practically falling over.
It was a good while before everyone finally quieted down.
Nathan Thorne rubbed his stomach. "Sierra, can you give me something to eat? I’m all out!"
