Chapter 175: Chapter 148: Sierra Sullivan, Why Is Joy Warren Always Looking at You?
With that thought, Jayce said decisively, "All the men, come with me. Let’s check outside!"
The moment she heard this, Sierra Sullivan was a little confused at first.
But it didn’t take long for Sierra Sullivan to understand why Jayce said it.
’Well, of course...’
Some things were best left unsaid, as long as everyone understood.
There was no need to say it out loud.
Jayce went to the door, cracked it open, and cautiously peered outside.
Once he was sure there was no danger, Jayce opened the door wider and was the first to step out.
Nathan Thorne was right behind him, with Dominic Crawford and the others following suit.
There were thirteen people in their group altogether.
But only two of them were women.
One was Sierra Sullivan, and the other was Joy Warren.
After Jayce and the others left, only Sierra Sullivan and Joy Warren remained in the room.
Joy Warren was normally a very straightforward and bold person, but for some reason, she seemed a little embarrassed right now.
She couldn’t even meet Sierra Sullivan’s gaze, her eyes constantly darting away.
Seeing Joy Warren act like this, Sierra Sullivan felt a little like laughing. "What’s wrong? Are you shy? There’s no need to be!"
As she spoke, Sierra Sullivan retrieved a pre-assembled tent from her space, then placed a portable, biodegradable toilet inside it.
Joy Warren’s eyes widened at the sight, filled with disbelief.
She’d never imagined that Sierra Sullivan would be so thoroughly prepared.
Sierra Sullivan winked at her. "You know, for a Space Ability User, the one thing I’m not short on is space. So I bring a little bit of everything."
Perhaps it was Sierra Sullivan’s attitude, or maybe her tone of voice, but Joy Warren visibly relaxed, a smile touching her lips.
The two of them took turns relieving themselves.
Sierra Sullivan stored the tent and toilet, then brought out some fresh water and gave Joy Warren a brand-new toothbrush, cup, and toothpaste.
For many people in this post-apocalyptic world, brushing their teeth daily was a luxury. Water was simply too precious.
But Joy Warren was a Superpower User and was allotted far more water than ordinary people, so she could still manage her daily hygiene.
But that was back at the base.
While they were out on the road, she’d planned to just make do and wait until she was back at the base to wash up properly.
She never expected Sierra Sullivan to give her all this.
Looking at the bright smile on Sierra Sullivan’s face, Joy Warren couldn’t help but smile back. "Captain Sullivan, thank you."
"You call me Captain. This is the least I can do," Sierra Sullivan said with a smile.
’It’s my duty to make sure my team members are as comfortable as possible, within my power!’
When Joy Warren heard this, her eyes grew even brighter, as if they were filled with stars.
Sierra Sullivan felt a little uncomfortable under Joy Warren’s star-struck gaze.
’I didn’t even say that much!’
’There wasn’t anything wrong with what I just said, was there?’
Just as Sierra Sullivan was about to ask, there was a knock on the door, and Jayce’s voice followed.
"Sierra, can we come in?"
"Yes!"
The moment Sierra Sullivan spoke, Jayce pushed the door open and led the way inside.
A moment later, the whole group had filed in, and the door was closed once more.
"What’s it like outside?" Sierra Sullivan asked, looking at Jayce.
Jayce shook his head. "The sandstorm is still raging. We just checked—the glass on this floor, as well as the floors directly above and below, is almost completely shattered. It must have been those birds. We didn’t check the other floors, but I imagine it’s more of the same."
Dominic Crawford rubbed his head. "Why do I get the feeling those birds did this on purpose?"
Nathan Thorne nodded in agreement. "It’s not just you; I think so, too. These damn mutated birds might actually be doing this deliberately. It’s like they’ve become sentient!"
Before the apocalypse, people buying homes always wanted more and bigger windows for better natural light.
It got to the point where huge, floor-to-ceiling windows became standard, and the more a house had, the more desirable it was.
Who back then could have ever predicted a day like this?
Sierra Sullivan’s brow furrowed. "With the windows destroyed, these places aren’t just unsafe, they’re unlivable. I wonder how things are back at the base."
The residential complex where their base was located had a ridiculous number of windows.
And not every unit had been fitted with bulletproof glass.
Even with bulletproof glass, it was uncertain if it could withstand the attacks from these mutated birds.
’Is it possible that the surface is becoming truly uninhabitable for humans?’
’After living on the surface for so many years, after believing they had conquered the planet, were humans now destined to live underground, deprived of the sun and sky?’
Although she had long known that Kevin Everett was having underground residences built, knowing about it was one thing; actually moving in and living there was another entirely.
’If there was any way to live on the surface, who would willingly live underground?’
As Sierra Sullivan was lost in thought, she felt a hand grasp hers.
Recognizing the familiar touch and warmth, Sierra Sullivan squeezed Jayce’s hand back without even looking.
No words were needed. Just holding each other’s hands was enough to offer comfort.
Before long, Sierra Sullivan had composed herself. She smiled at Jayce. "Don’t worry, I’m okay. And I’m sure the base will be, too."
’We’ve been preparing for a long time. We won’t be defeated by a sudden crisis like this.’
’We can’t fly back to the base right now anyway, so we have to focus on taking care of ourselves first.’
’Worrying about anything else will only add to the stress.’
Her mindset adjusted, Sierra Sullivan smiled at the group. "Well, since things are what they are, let’s have breakfast! What does everyone want to eat?"
"Breakfast! Great idea!" Nathan Thorne responded immediately. "I’m starving!"
He said this while still holding a bag of beef jerky, which he was chewing on incessantly, making his words a little muffled.
But everyone understood.
After all, Nathan Thorne was now a Three-System Superpower User, and his body required more energy and calories.
Eating more was better for him.
Sierra Sullivan pulled all sorts of cooked food out of her space ability.
Flatbreads, steamed buns, stuffed buns, congee, hot and sour soup, pickled vegetables, as well as a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.
There was a wide variety and plenty of it, enough to guarantee everyone could eat and drink their fill.
While they were eating, Sierra Sullivan could clearly feel Joy Warren’s gaze on her from time to time.
Sierra Sullivan wasn’t the only one who noticed; Dominic Crawford did, too.
Dominic Crawford just found it strange.
After the meal, when no one else was paying attention, he quietly sidled up to Sierra Sullivan. "Hey, Sierra, why does Joy Warren keep looking at you?"
If Joy Warren were looking at another man, Dominic Crawford could at least try to compete with him.
But she kept looking at Sierra Sullivan. What was he supposed to do about that?
