Chapter 144: Chapter 144: Is There a Problem with Nathan Thorne and the Others’ Awakening?

Candice Tate was a little overly dependent on Sierra.

Held in Sierra’s arms, she wrapped her small hands around Sierra’s neck and gently nuzzled her cheek against Sierra’s face.

Feeling Candice’s affectionate gestures, Sierra felt as if her heart was about to melt.

Even though she was holding a person, it always felt like she was holding a little kitten.

It was an indescribable feeling.

But all in all, she liked it very much.

Candice Tate snuggled in Sierra’s arms for a while. Only after she’d had her fill of affection did she straighten up.

Her young yet delicate little face was now full of pride. "Sierra! I sprouted tons and tons of food today! So many people will get to eat the food I grew! Aren’t I amazing!"

"Of course!" Sierra affirmed, her expression completely serious. "Candice, you’ve always been amazing! You’re the most amazing one of all!"

Candice tilted her head and suddenly glanced at Jayce. "More amazing than Jayce?"

"???"

Before Sierra could answer, she saw the mischievous glint in Candice’s eyes.

Just from that look, Sierra understood. ’This little girl is doing it on purpose!’

’Who knew!’

’This little girl has a side like this to her!’

She found it rather amusing but managed to hold back her laughter.

Sierra nodded with a straight face. "Of course. Candice is the most amazing!"

"Why?" Jayce looked over, an aggrieved expression on his face. "Why am I not the most amazing? What am I lacking?"

’I have a Dual Ability!’

’In Sierra’s mind, can I really not compare to a little girl like Candice?’

Candice blinked, a hint of curiosity in her eyes. "Yeah, Sierra, why am I the most amazing?"

Candice hadn’t originally planned to ask such a question.

But since Jayce had asked, she decided to ask as well.

Sierra shot Jayce an exasperated look.

’Satisfied now?’

’Now I have to answer!’

Jayce rubbed his nose. ’It’s not like I did it on purpose!’

’But I really was curious!’

With both of them looking at her, Sierra could only clear her throat. "It’s because of your age, of course! When Superpowers are at a similar level, your young age makes you more impressive, Candice! By the time you’re as old as Jayce, you’ll definitely be even more amazing than he is now!"

Candice thought about it carefully. Deciding that what Sierra said made a lot of sense, she nodded, the expression on her little face growing even more solemn.

"Rest assured, Sierra. I’ll work really hard and become very, very powerful!"

"Of course I believe in you!"

If it were possible, Sierra wished everyone could have a Superpower and become incredibly powerful.

Only then would the survivors have a greater chance of survival.

Perhaps, in the future, it might even be possible to end this apocalypse.

This time, Jayce didn’t argue with Candice. Instead, he nodded seriously. "Sierra’s right, Candice. When you grow up, you’ll definitely be the most powerful one."

’It’s not just about Candice. If only all the children could grow more and more powerful as they got older!’

Hearing Jayce say that, Candice actually looked a little embarrassed.

Just a moment ago she’d been competing with him, and now he was turning around and saying she was the most powerful one.

"You’re very powerful too!" Candice said in a small voice, blushing.

Hearing Candice’s remark, the three of them laughed.

’Kids really are so innocent!’

"Alright, don’t just stand outside talking," Yvonne Shelby said. "Come on in! We’re not finished with our work yet!"

Upon hearing that, Jayce immediately said, "Perfect. I can help too."

Jayce’s Wood Element Ability had also reached the Third Level. Although he was a bit behind Candice, he was still very powerful!

One more person meant more power, and the survivors in the base would be able to eat more varied food. It was, of course, a good thing.

Yvonne was still a little worried, though. "You just got back. Shouldn’t you rest for the night?"

"No need," Jayce refused outright. "I’ve been resting the whole day. I’m not tired at all."

Although they had encountered some Aberrant Beasts on the way back, there weren’t many, and they were dealt with by others before Jayce even had a chance to act.

He hadn’t used up any of his Superpower at all.

Using it now to sprout crops would be perfect.

Hearing Jayce say this, Yvonne didn’t say anything more.

Jayce was a grown man; he surely knew what he should and shouldn’t do. There was no need for her to nag.

Once they were inside, Candice and Jayce got busy.

The two of them seemed to be in a silent competition as more and more supplies piled up in the room.

Fortunately, a few Space Ability Users returned not long after and finally moved the supplies piled up in the room into their personal spaces.

Sierra had been curled up on the sofa, watching them work.

But whether from exhaustion or the quiet, the atmosphere was rather hypnotic.

Without even realizing it, Sierra drifted into a deep sleep.

She didn’t know how long she had slept. Only when she heard someone call her name did Sierra slowly open her eyes.

A habit she’d developed during the apocalypse was to become instantly alert the moment she opened her eyes, never groggy.

Otherwise, out in the wild where danger lurked everywhere, it would be a fatal mistake.

But things were different now.

Sierra became instantly alert, her eyes flying open as wide as saucers.

When she saw that it was Jayce standing before her, Sierra finally relaxed. "What is it? Are you all finished?"

Jayce nodded. "Yeah, we’re finished. Yvonne took Candice to the tenth floor and told us to come over for dinner in a bit."

Sierra nodded in understanding. "Okay, let’s go now."

"No need to be in such a hurry," Jayce said. "I just got in touch with General Aldridge. Let’s go over there first."

’Go see General Aldridge?’

"Did something go wrong with the awakenings for Nathan Thorne and his group?" Sierra asked quickly.

’If nothing was wrong, General Aldridge wouldn’t be in such a hurry for them to come over, would he?’

"General Aldridge didn’t say specifically, but something’s come up. From the sound of his voice, though, it doesn’t seem to be bad news."

"Then let’s go take a look."

Sierra started to get up as she spoke.

But perhaps because she’d slept too long, her limbs felt a little weak.

She had just stood up when her legs gave way, and she tumbled back onto the sofa.

"Sierra!"

Jayce was startled and lunged forward to catch Sierra.

As a result, Sierra ended up on her back on the sofa, with Jayce sprawled on top of her.

They stared at each other, so close they could feel every breath.

They were so close that Sierra could clearly see every one of Jayce’s eyelashes.

Sierra’s mind went blank.
