Chapter 115: Chapter 115: Brother Said Sister Was Too Tired Last Night
Looking at the newly planted plot, Sierra felt a great sense of accomplishment.
By the time she came back tomorrow evening, this place would be a sea of green!
Perhaps it was a sign of getting older.
When she was planting, it didn’t feel like a chore at all; in fact, it was downright joyful!
And the thought of the harvest made her even happier!
While Sierra was still admiring her work, Jayce had already hurried off to the kitchen.
Several stoves were lit at once in the kitchen, each with a large pot on top, stewing various kinds of meat.
Braised pork belly, clear-broth sparerib soup, stewed lamb chops, and braised beef.
The moment Sierra stepped into the kitchen, she was hit by a rich aroma.
The combined fragrance of all the different meats washed over her.
Sierra hadn’t been hungry before.
But perhaps it was from all the hard work, or maybe the meat just smelled too incredible, because her mouth had started to water.
Before Sierra could even get close, Jayce emerged with a bowl of sparerib soup.
As soon as she walked over, Jayce handed it to her. "Freshly made sparerib and corn soup. I added some winter melon, too. See how you like it!"
"Okay!"
Sierra took the bowl, scooped up a spoonful, blew on it, and brought it to her lips.
There were no other seasonings in the soup besides salt.
But a single sip was so savory it made Sierra raise her eyebrows.
"It’s delicious!"
It wasn’t just savory; there was a light sweetness to it—the flavor of the corn.
The corn grown in the space was far superior to any sold outside.
Whether eaten on its own or used in soup, it was exceptional.
The winter melon was stewed to perfection.
It hardly needed chewing, melting the moment it entered her mouth.
It had the winter melon’s own refreshing taste, tinged with a hint of meaty flavor.
And the spareribs were another story entirely.
They were so tender they fell right off the bone and melted in her mouth, requiring no effort to chew.
Jayce was watching her with eager eyes, awaiting her verdict. "Sierra, how is it?"
Sierra looked at Jayce and noticed a hint of nervousness on his face.
"Why are you so nervous?" Sierra couldn’t help but find it amusing. "Have you no confidence in your own cooking?"
"With anyone else, I have absolute confidence," Jayce answered earnestly. "If I’m cooking for them, they should just be grateful. Whether they think it’s good or not is irrelevant. But with you, I get nervous."
He looked a little embarrassed as he said this.
But he said it anyway.
Faced with Jayce’s honesty, Sierra’s smile faded, and her expression became incredibly serious. "I understand how you feel. But you should be more confident. You’re a great cook. Your food is delicious—way better than anything I’ve bought!"
At that, Jayce’s heart, which had been in his throat, finally settled.
Getting Sierra’s approval meant that all his hard work practicing his cooking hadn’t been in vain!
Many years ago, he had dreamed that one day, he would cook for Sierra.
Now, his wish had finally come true!
Once Jayce had all the dishes prepared, the two of them washed up and left the space.
They hadn’t noticed how late it was while they were busy, but a glance at the time showed it was nearly midnight.
In the post-apocalyptic world, with no electricity or internet, everyone was used to going to bed and waking up early.
Sierra and Jayce were no exception.
This was the first time in a long while that they had stayed up so late.
Without another word, they immediately went to bed.
They didn’t have to leave the base the next day, but there were other things to do. They couldn’t very well wake up later than Candice.
That was the plan, anyway.
But the next morning, Sierra slept in until eight o’clock.
Eight o’clock might not sound that late.
But in the apocalypse, it was considered sleeping in.
By this time, Jayce was no longer in bed.
The bedroom door was closed, but Sierra could still faintly smell something fragrant.
It was... the smell of noodles cooking!
In that moment, Sierra was just glad that they had stocked the kitchen with plenty of supplies.
Otherwise, Jayce and Candice would probably have to make do with just fruits and vegetables.
Sierra didn’t linger in bed. She immediately got up, dressed, and washed up.
As soon as she walked into the dining room, she saw Candice sitting at the table.
In front of Candice was a huge bowl of noodles.
It was bigger than her face.
The bowl was filled with steaming hot noodles.
It had a tomato broth base, filled with all sorts of vegetables, cured pork, and sausage. On top of all that were two golden-yellow fried eggs.
Even without tasting it, you could tell just by looking that it would be delicious.
Next to the noodle bowl were two plates.
One held hand-shredded chicken, and the other contained braised beef.
For a breakfast, this was all a bit heavy!
But then again, all three of them had huge appetites now!
If they just had congee, they would never feel full!
Even if they felt full at the time, they would probably be hungry again soon after.
Candice had just picked up her chopsticks when she saw Sierra.
"Sierra!"
Candice’s face was all smiles.
"Jayce said you were really tired last night, so he told me to be quiet and not wake you up."
Sierra was speechless. "..."
’That Jayce is so hopeless! How could he say something like that to a child?’
’Good thing Candice is too innocent to understand. If she repeated that to someone else, who knows what they’d think!’
Candice, unaware of what Sierra was thinking, tilted her little head, her eyes full of curiosity.
"What were you doing last night, Sierra? Why were you so tired?"
Sierra, "..."
’Of course she had to ask!’
’Candice might not understand anything, but it’s precisely because she’s so innocent that she’d keep asking!’
"I was training my Superpower last night!" Sierra said with a straight face, spouting complete nonsense. "I was just too focused and worked too hard, so now I’m tired!"
"Wow!"
Candice’s eyes were filled with admiration.
"You’re amazing, Sierra! I want to learn from you!"
When Candice said she wanted to learn, she meant it. She would truly study hard!
She was a very serious and hardworking child!
Although Sierra was just talking nonsense, if it motivated Candice to work even harder, that could be a good thing!
Thinking this, Sierra suddenly felt that her little lie wasn’t such a big deal after all.
"You’re already very serious and hardworking, Candice!" Sierra said. "But while being diligent is important, you also need to balance work and rest. Don’t wear yourself out, okay?"
"I know!"
As they were talking, Jayce walked out of the kitchen, also holding a large bowl of steaming noodles.
It was identical to Candice’s, except for the generous addition of chili peppers.
Jayce looked over with a smile. "I figured you’d be waking up soon, so I made your noodles too."
Jayce placed the bowl on the table, then turned and went back into the kitchen.
This time, however, he didn’t come out with noodles, but with two side dishes.
One was a plate of cold-dressed cucumber, the other a plate of stir-fried seasonal vegetables.
Eating only meat could be a bit heavy; these two dishes were the perfect thing to cut through the richness!
