Chapter 226: Close call.

Had she not reacted fast enough, the bullet would not have hit Bai Li’s head thanks to Bai Li’s own superhuman reaction speed, but it would still have been close enough to cause serious harm. Even a slight delay could have been disastrous. The speed of the bullet was still faster than her body could normally track, and if she had not intervened at the final moment, Bai Li would have been gravely injured. There was no doubt about that. And if it had not been for Yan Cijin changing the bullet’s trajectory at the last moment, it would have squarely hit Bai Li’s body. That much was obvious to her. Yan Cijin breathed a deep sigh of relief, but the relief only lasted for a second before something else took its place. Her eyes snapped directly toward the opposite building, toward the balcony where the culprit was standing. There, she could clearly see a brush looking man with an ugly smile on his face. He was still holding the gun in his hand like he had all the power in the world and had just scored a great victory. But in reality, he looked ridiculous and disgusting.

Yan Cijin’s hands burned with anger as she stared at him. The blue light on her fingers seemed to brighten slightly under the force of that emotion, as if even the light itself had become impatient. Her eyes, which were already a little bloodshot, now looked even more intense. She was furious. Furious at the cowardly attack. Furious at the reckless cruelty. Furious that someone like him would think he could shoot at Bai Li and walk away untouched.

Hu Xuecheng suddenly felt his whole body tremble with an unknown fear. It happened so fast that he did not even understand it at first. One moment, he was standing on the chair with the gun in his hand, feeling powerful and satisfied because he believed he had finally caught Bai Li off guard. The next moment, his heart seemed to seize in his chest. It felt as if an invisible grip had wrapped around his entire body. His heart was being held in the hands of the reaper itself. The sensation was so strong, so sudden, that his knees nearly buckled. Cold sweat broke out on his back and forehead almost instantly. He began to breathe with difficulty, each breath feeling shorter than the last. For no reason he could understand, fear started spreading through him from the inside out, sinking into his limbs, his chest, his throat, and his head.

He did not know what was happening. He only knew that something was wrong. Very wrong. The feeling was so terrifying that it stripped away all the smugness from his face in a second. His mouth went dry, his fingers tightened around the gun, and his body stiffened so hard that he almost lost his balance on the chair. He did not understand why he suddenly felt like he was standing on the edge of death. He just knew, with a clarity that made his whole stomach twist, that if he did not run away, he would die soon.

"You... you..." Fang Xiaofei was suddenly stunned by the sudden turn of events. Just moments before Hu Xuecheng was gloating and laughing sinisterly about missing the shot by an inch, but now he was suddenly like this, on his knees with his face pale and bloodless as if he was about to die.

She did not know what was happening, but she had no intention to help this man. In fact, she wished that this bastard died right here and now. She had been acting like a frightened helper this whole time, but fear and disgust were two different things. Hu Xuecheng had always carried himself like he was untouchable just because he had a gun, a little money, and a small circle of people around him who were too scared to talk back. Fang Xiaofei had seen enough of his temper, enough of his cold eyes, enough of his nasty way of looking at people. If something bad happened to him, she would not cry over it. She might even feel a little better.

On the other hand, Yan Cijin finally moved her fingers slightly. The bluish hue extending from her fingers seemed to become a bit brighter, though not seen by the naked eyes of a normal human. She perfectly controlled her powers. Her breathing was calm, her face unreadable, but the anger in her eyes was so cold that it seemed to sharpen the air around her. She reached out toward the opposite balcony as if something invisible had formed in her palm. Hu Xuecheng did not even get a full word out before the force grabbed hold of his neck and pulled him forward. The motion was too fast, too clean, too final. Before he could even utter a word of pleading to the unknown force binding him, Yan Cijin threw him off the railing.

He was quite high up in the building and a fall from that high would not only kill him but would make him almost unrecognizable. But she did not care. She watched coldly as the man fell down at an incredible pace while his unfiltered and loud screams shook the whole complex. The people alive from other apartments were startled but soon the sound came to a deathly stop with a loud thud that could be heard all around. His falling body hit the ground, splattering blood everywhere.

For a moment, the entire area seemed to freeze.

The courtyard went silent first. Even the zombies still wandering around outside seemed to pause in that stupid, half broken way they had when something loud and unfamiliar happened. A few of them turned their heads in random directions, not understanding where the noise came from. Then the silence spread upward, climbing the outer walls of Building 9 and slipping into the windows, balconies, hallways, and rooms. Nobody immediately understood what had happened.
