Chapter 224: DARK AND SINISTER.

A sharp wave of panic shot through her. There was no way she could let her innocent little daughter see the horrific scene below. The blood, the broken bodies, the relentless slaughter of zombies, the brutal and ugly mess of the apocalypse, none of that was something a child should ever be forced to witness. Even though the world had already become a dangerous place, even though terrible things were happening every day now, Yan Cijin still did not want Lili to see that kind of violence directly. She turned around at once, moving fast enough to block the little girl’s line of sight with her own body. Her voice softened immediately as she said gently, "Lili, please be a good girl for mommy. Go back inside the living room and play with your toys by yourself for a little while. I promise I will come inside and play a game with you right away."

Lili’s small face wrinkled a little in disappointment. She clearly still wanted to know what was going on outside, and she seemed to think that whatever her mother was looking at must be exciting if it had drawn so much of her attention. But in the end, she was still a very obedient little girl. She pouted softly, then nodded. "Okay then, if you promise." Her voice sounded a little grumbly, as if she was unhappy about being sent away, but she did not throw a tantrum or refuse. She just slowly turned around and walked back toward the living room. Even then, she kept looking back over her shoulder every few steps, as though she was still hoping her mother might call her back and let her see. But Yan Cijin stayed where she was, blocking the balcony view until Lili had disappeared safely inside. Only after that did her shoulders relax a little.

Meanwhile, inside room 2004, Hu Xuecheng was also staring intently at the frantic messages lighting up the building’s group chat.

The twenty and twenty first floors of the building had been structured as a lavish duplex apartment, and that alone made them stand out from the other units. It was the kind of residence that looked luxurious from the outside and probably even more extravagant on the inside, with spacious rooms and a wide balcony that gave a clear view of the courtyard below. Standing out on the balcony of the twentieth floor, Hu Xuecheng peered over the ledge and instantly spotted the lone figure below. Bai Li was still down there, moving at incredible speed, continuously hacking, slashing, and spinning through wave after wave of zombies. From up here, her figure looked both sharp and nimble, like some kind of blade dancing through a field of corpses. Even from a distance, the sight made Hu Xuecheng’s eyes narrow.

A dark and sinister smile slowly spread across his face.

He reached out, grabbed the metal frame, and carefully popped the protective mesh screen out of the window frame. The screen came loose with a soft sound, and he tossed it onto the floor behind him without caring where it landed. Then he pushed the heavy glass window open as wide as it could possibly go. The cool air rushed into the room, and the opening grew large enough for him to act without obstruction. Seeing Hu Xuecheng suddenly open the window to its maximum limit while tightly gripping a deadly firearm in his hand, Fang Xiaofei immediately felt her heart jump into her throat.

She took an anxious step forward and asked, "Brother Hu, what exactly are you doing? Why did you open the window so wide? Please be careful, it is dangerous."

Hu Xuecheng let out a cold snort. "Careful? Why the hell should I be careful?" His tone was harsh and full of venom, every word carrying obvious malice. "It is that arrogant bitch Bai Li who needs to be careful right now. Doesn’t she think I am just a big talker? Doesn’t she think I would not actually dare to kill anyone in this building? Fine. I am going to show her exactly who she is dealing with today."

The way he said it made Fang Xiaofei’s skin crawl. She had already been afraid of him before, but now there was something in his expression that made him look even more unstable than usual. That smile on his face was not the smile of a person who was thinking clearly. It was the kind of look someone wore when they had already crossed a line in their head and no longer cared about the consequences. Still, Fang Xiaofei did not dare say another word. She knew very well that if she angered him now, the one who would suffer was not Bai Li but her.

Hu Xuecheng turned his head slightly and barked out an order, his voice sharp and commanding. "Go inside right now and get me a chair. Make sure it is a really solid, sturdy one. I am going to take care of Bai Li once and for all, right from this exact spot."

"Okay, okay, Brother Hu." Fang Xiaofei swallowed hard and hurried to obey. "Please just be careful."

She did not dare delay even for a second. Fear pushed her into motion, and she quickly scrambled into the dining room, where she brought out a heavy wooden chair. The chair looked sturdy enough to support a person leaning and standing on it. Even so, the sight of him taking these steps so deliberately made her feel increasingly uneasy. She moved the chair into position and then stepped back nervously.

Hu Xuecheng climbed onto the chair in one smooth motion, carefully balancing his weight. His left hand gripped the metal window frame tightly to keep himself stable, while his right hand lifted the gun into proper position. He lowered the barrel and pointed it directly down at Bai Li below. His body was tense, his jaw tight, his breathing controlled in a way that made it obvious he was focused entirely on the target beneath him.
