Chapter 2155: Chapter 2356: There’s a Thief in the House!!!
In the end, Hao Jian sighed and said, "Alright, alright, it’s getting late, I’ll head back now."
After speaking, Hao Jian turned to leave, but just then Li Weiwei called out to him, saying, "Um... I’m really not someone who burns bridges after crossing them."
Hao Jian waved his hand, saying, "Alright, alright, I know you’re not that kind of person."
He really couldn’t understand women; just a moment ago she seemed eager to get rid of him, like she was burning bridges, but now she seemed like she wanted to keep him around. This was truly leaving him conflicted; was she trying to burn bridges or was it a case of feigned reluctance? He couldn’t figure it out, so he shook his head, and as soon as he finished speaking, he left.
Li Weiwei was about to say something, but once Hao Jian finished his words, he left immediately, not giving her a chance to speak. By the time she realized, Hao Jian was already gone. She collected herself and then walked into her room.
Hao Jian got into the elevator, exited the building, and outside the community, he hailed a cab to head home. As soon as he got in the car and checked his phone, it was already around eleven o’clock. Looking again, there was an unread message, and surprisingly it was from Liang Xiaohan, sent at around half-past ten, thinking to himself, he was talking with Li Weiwei’s dad at that time, no wonder he hadn’t noticed the notification.
He unlocked the screen and opened the chat interface.
"Not coming back? Or don’t want to come back? I’m going to sleep, if I don’t see you come back by tomorrow morning, there will be consequences!" — Liang Xiaohan
Seeing this, Hao Jian felt a sudden chill in his heart; every time this girl mentions consequences, it’s never a good thing, so now every time he sees her send anything about consequences, he gets a little jittery. But this time it was just about coming back early, nothing more, so he calmed himself down, thinking since he’s already in the cab, it wouldn’t be long before he was home, so there was nothing to worry about.
The weekend was approaching, and Liang Yuwei said she would take the day off this Friday and come hang out for a few days. And during those days if Liang Xiaohan started acting strange and suddenly snitched to Liang Yuwei, he’d surely be done for. Therefore, no matter what, he had to soothe Liang Xiaohan’s temperament, ensuring she wouldn’t blurting out anything inappropriate, or he’d be in deep trouble.
Thinking about this, because it was late night, there weren’t many cars on the road, and the driver was speeding up a bit, probably eager to finish this ride and go home, keeping a steady fast pace. Hao Jian reckoned at this speed, he’d be home in about ten minutes.
But at this moment, the phone in his pocket suddenly vibrated, and then rang; someone was calling.
This late? Generally, people would be sleeping at this hour, unlikely to call for no reason, and not many people knew his number. So, when the phone rang, Hao Jian reached into his pocket to grab his phone, and to his surprise, it was Zhang Danlin calling.
He hesitated, feeling conflicted, unsure whether he should answer the call. If he did, it might seem inappropriate for her to be calling so late; moreover, he had been deliberately distancing himself from her, avoiding conversations as much as possible. Sometimes when he encountered her on the street, even if she called out to him, he’d be cold and indifferent, intending to make her hopeless and give up—he didn’t wish to lead on such a young girl.
However, if she was calling now, could there be an emergency? Otherwise, she wouldn’t have called at this hour; normally she’d be sleeping. If it weren’t important, she wouldn’t disturb him like this. He doubted Zhang Danlin would do something so idle.
Faced with this dilemma, he finally pressed the answer button and took the call.
"What’s up?" Hao Jian said as soon as he answered.
Unexpectedly, although he had answered the call, there was silence and stillness on the other end, not a single sound, making him frown. The call went through, so why the silence? He felt something was off and didn’t speak, listening carefully to any noises from the other end.
Could something have happened? Hao Jian speculated, furrowing his brows even more deeply, imagining various scenarios. If there wasn’t a problem, Zhang Danlin wouldn’t have called him. Judging by her behavior recently, if she decided to call, it must be serious, considering girls her age have their pride.
A while passed, roughly thirty seconds, and there was still no sound from the other end. Gradually, he began to hear breathing, Zhang Danlin’s, quick and seemingly frightened.
Pausing, Hao Jian realized something was wrong and quickly asked, "Hey! What’s happening with you? If there’s something wrong, say so; otherwise, I’ll hang up."
Hao Jian said this, having no idea what was going on with Zhang Danlin, only able to faintly hear her breathing, while she said nothing else. Unable to hear anything else, he hoped to figure out if Zhang Danlin needed something or not, encouraging her to speak. If she truly had no issues, he would hang up, feeling a bit tired, unwilling to get dragged into teenage drama.
But just then, he heard Zhang Danlin’s cry for help.
"Hao Jian, I’m really scared right now!" Zhang Danlin’s voice was very small.
Upon hearing this, Hao Jian frowned; since Zhang Danlin called him, he felt something was amiss. She wouldn’t have called for so long without speaking up, and she wouldn’t be so idle late at night. The breathing made him suspect something was wrong, as if she wanted to speak but was too scared.
From her whispering earlier, he sensed something was seriously wrong. There must be something happening, or she wouldn’t speak so quietly. He frowned and hurriedly said, "What’s happening? Don’t be afraid, I’m here; if it’s inconvenient to speak, whisper, I can hear you."
"Okay!" he barely heard her small voice, followed by, "I’m home alone, scared. I think there’s a thief in my house, I don’t know what to do, Hao Jian, please come quickly!"
Upon hearing this, Hao Jian’s frown deepened, a thief had broken in! Instantly, his mind raced to the worst case scenario; Zhang Danlin was just a girl at home alone, which could be incredibly dangerous. He immediately said, "Don’t hang up; stay connected. I’m heading to your place right now, don’t be afraid."
Saying this, Hao Jian urgently told the driver ahead, "Driver, turn around, head to Shanghe International Community, hurry, faster!"
The driver had overheard Hao Jian’s call and sensed something was wrong, recognizing the urgency from Hao Jian’s tone and anxious expression, so he didn’t hesitate at all, immediately turning around and driving toward the destination Hao Jian indicated.
"Can you go faster?" Hao Jian urged again.
The driver pushed the speed to the maximum, cruising swiftly down the road. Meanwhile, Hao Jian kept urging the driver to go faster while speaking over the phone to Zhang Danlin, assuring her to stay calm and not fear, as he was almost there.
In this manner, it only took less than ten minutes to reach the entrance of Zhang Danlin’s community. Hao Jian instructed the driver to stop, knowing that driving up to Zhang Danlin’s door might alarm the thief, which wouldn’t be good. After paying, the driver left, and Hao Jian quickly hastened his steps, running toward Zhang Danlin’s house.
Under a minute later, he was at her doorstep.
"Don’t be afraid! I’m here!" Hao Jian announced.
Zhang Danlin on the other end of the call was already terrified to her core; imagine a girl alone at home encountering such an incident—fear would already be overwhelming. If Hao Jian hadn’t been talking to her continuously, she might have already lost it.
"Okay!" she softly replied, staying hidden in the corner, waiting for Hao Jian to arrive.
By now, Hao Jian had reached her front door, inspecting closely—surprisingly, the door was locked, with no signs of forced entry, indicating the thief hadn’t entered through the main door or there would be visible damage.
With the thief inside and no key to the door, breaking in would alert the thief and they might escape, making it impossible to catch them.
Thinking this, Hao Jian planned to find another way in and noticed the window next to Zhang Danlin’s was open, clearly the thief’s entry point.
Upon seeing this, Hao Jian quickly moved to the window and climbed in, easily jumping into Zhang Danlin’s home.
Looking around, entering the living room, he didn’t find anything unusual, with nothing having been disturbed.
He had visited Zhang Danlin’s home before and knew where her bedroom was; she must be in her bedroom now. Without hesitation, he ran directly upstairs to her bedroom.
Zhang Danlin’s bedroom door was closed, and Hao Jian approached and immediately opened it.
Zhang Danlin was originally huddled in the corner clutching her blanket; as soon as she saw the door open, she instinctively retreated.
"Don’t worry! It’s me, I’m here!" Hao Jian called out.
She glanced over and saw it was Hao Jian.
