Kael watched as Irelia ran toward the first carriage of the convoy, her elegant figure still exuding an air of innocence. She quickly opened the door and entered, disappearing from Kael’s line of sight. He crossed his arms and sighed, feeling like he had just gotten involved in something bigger than he had anticipated.
"Oh, yes, of course, because nothing in your life is simple," Umbra murmured sarcastically at his side, floating with a mischievous expression. "The noble girl enters the story, and the next chapter is about to be a drama of intrigue."
"Give me a break, Umbra," Kael replied, rolling his eyes. "I just said I would travel with them. That doesn’t mean I’m getting involved with them."
"Sure, sure," Umbra responded with a mocking smile. "Because accepting an invitation from a random noble girl has never led anyone into trouble before. Not even once in the history of the world."
Kael ignored her comments and looked toward the carriage where Irelia had entered. After a few moments, he heard muffled laughter coming from inside the vehicle, followed by a deep, masculine voice questioning something.
He tilted his head slightly, trying to listen better. "I think her uncle didn’t get as excited as she said he would," he muttered, more to himself.
Before he could reflect further, the door of the carriage opened again, and Irelia emerged, now accompanied by a burly man. He was tall, with broad shoulders and short brown hair, wearing an outfit that mixed elegance with practicality. His eyes assessed Kael with a mix of curiosity and distrust.
"You’re the young man who helped with my dear niece’s carriage?" the man asked, his deep voice carrying an authoritative tone.

Kael straightened his posture and nodded slightly. "Yes, sir. I was just passing by and saw that they needed help."
The man furrowed his brow slightly, as if trying to size Kael up. "I’m Lord Adalric Ainsworth, Irelia’s uncle," he introduced himself. "And you are?"
"Kael RedGrave," he replied, maintaining a respectful tone, but sensing a subtle tension in the air, like an invisible web tightening.
Adalric, a man of imposing stature and sharp gaze, crossed his arms. A small smile crept onto his lips, but it wasn’t exactly welcoming. "Hmph. RedGrave, huh? Never heard of that name. But it doesn’t matter. Seems like you got my niece excited, so I’ll trust her judgment… for now."
Adalric’s smile morphed into something that looked almost demonic, a kind of expression that seemed to pierce through Kael’s confident facade and penetrate his deepest thoughts. The tension in the air seemed to heighten with each passing second, as if the man were studying Kael thoroughly, almost predatory in his scrutiny.
Kael tried to maintain composure, but he felt an involuntary shiver. Shit, what have I gotten myself into? he thought, trying not to show his discomfort.
Umbra, floating beside Kael, didn’t miss the opportunity to tease him. "Oh, look, Kael. You’ve finally found someone who can intimidate you. Impressive."
"Shut up, Umbra," Kael muttered, without moving his lips, trying not to draw more attention to himself.
Adalric tilted his head slightly, as if he had sensed the exchange of energy between Kael and Umbra, but said nothing. Instead, he snapped his fingers, catching the attention of one of the men accompanying the convoy. "Prepare a place for the young traveler in the last carriage. And make sure he doesn’t cause any trouble."
"Ah, uncle!" Irelia interrupted, appearing beside Adalric with a radiant smile. "You don’t have to be so strict. I’m sure Kael will be a great travel companion. Right, Kael?"
Kael nodded quickly, though his mind was still screaming internally. Great. Now I have to impress an uncle who looks like a demon and a noble I barely know. This is just getting better.
Adalric gave Kael a long, assessing look, as if he were still deciding whether to allow such closeness with his niece. Finally, he shrugged and turned to Irelia. "If that’s what you want, so be it. But remember, Irelia, my patience is not infinite."
"Understood, uncle!" Irelia replied with an innocent smile, clearly ignoring the warning tone in Adalric’s words. She grabbed Kael by the arm and guided him toward the carriage.
Kael just followed, still trying to understand how he ended up in this situation. From surviving in a forest to traveling with nobles. What progress... or bad luck, he thought, throwing one last glance at Adalric, who had already turned his attention back to the other members of the convoy.
Irelia opened the carriage door with enthusiasm and gestured for Kael to enter first. "Come, sit. It’s much more comfortable than walking for hours."
Kael stepped in, immediately noticing the understated luxury of the interior. Cushioned seats, polished wood details, and small curtains at the windows gave the carriage an elegance he wasn’t used to. He hesitated for a moment before sitting in the corner opposite Irelia, trying to maintain some respectful distance.
Irelia, however, didn’t seem interested in formalities. She sat directly next to him, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "So, Kael, tell me more about yourself! Where are you from? What are you doing alone on these roads?"
Kael scratched the back of his neck, trying to formulate an answer without revealing too much. "I... come from a small village. I’m traveling to Azalith. There are... things I need to take care of there." He decided to keep the explanation vague, but sincere enough not to raise suspicions.
Irelia tilted her head, clearly intrigued. "Azalith, huh? A busy place. And traveling alone is pretty dangerous. You’re either very brave... or very lucky," she said, laughing softly.
Umbra, invisible to Irelia, appeared beside Kael and whispered, "Brave? Lucky? She clearly doesn’t know your list of bad decisions so far."
Kael gave a light cough to disguise his discomfort, ignoring Umbra. "And you, Irelia? Why are you traveling with this convoy?" He asked, shifting the focus of the conversation.
Irelia crossed her legs gracefully and rested her hands in her lap. "I’m going to the Azalith Academy. My uncle has important business there, and he thought it would be good for me to accompany him, learn more about the world, and go to school. It’s a bit tiring, but I like traveling."
Kael raised an eyebrow, surprised. "Azalith Academy, huh? Sounds... grand. I’ve heard of it, but never really thought much about it." He looked out the window for a moment, wondering what a place like that would be like, so different from the life he knew.
"And there goes Mister ’Faking Lies’ again…" Umbra said with a smile, glad no one could see or interact with her.
Irelia smiled, her eyes shining with excitement. "It’s an amazing place, from what I’ve heard. It brings together the brightest minds, the strongest warriors, and the most talented mages from all over the world. My uncle says it’s a privilege to study there. Honestly, I’m really excited, but also a bit nervous."
Kael looked at her, intrigued. "Nervous? Why? You seem more than capable."
She gave a slight smile, but there was a hint of vulnerability in her gaze. "Well, I’m from a noble family, so the expectations for me are high. Everyone expects me to be exemplary, but... what if I can’t live up to those expectations? Also, I’m not very good at magic..."
Kael crossed his arms, thinking about what to say. "Well, at least you have the chance to try. That’s already more than many people get. And if I may give you some advice, just do your best. Forget about what others expect for a moment and figure out what you really want."
Kael’s words took Irelia by surprise. She watched him for a moment, as if evaluating the depth of what he had just said. Then, a soft smile curved her lips. "You have an interesting perspective, Kael. Maybe I should think more like that."
Umbra, invisible beside Kael, couldn’t resist teasing. "Look at you, giving out wise advice now? Who would’ve thought you had it in you?"
Kael ignored Umbra’s provocation again, focusing on Irelia. "And what about your uncle? He seems... well, serious."
Irelia let out a soft laugh, shaking her head. "Oh, he is. But deep down, he just wants what’s best for me. He’s protective, sometimes even too much, but I know he cares. You’ll get used to his way eventually."
Kael raised an eyebrow, skeptical. The image of Adalric staring at him as if he could pierce him with his eyes was still fresh in his mind. Still, he decided to drop the subject for now.
"Well, I hope your experience at the Academy is everything you expect," Kael said, looking out again as the scenery continued to pass by.
"Thank you," Irelia replied softly. "And you? Any plans once you get to Azalith?"
Kael shrugged, his gaze distant. "For now, it’s just the next step in my journey. But who knows what the future holds?"
"Well, who knows," Irelia replied with an enigmatic smile, growing more intrigued by the mysterious young man beside her.
