Chapter 2494: Chapter 2,558: Even the Secretary Can’t Help
Xu Zhenguo shook his head and said, "I’m not trying to intervene. It’s just... sigh, let’s not talk about it. Actually, I’m not too angry that the person responsible ran away. After all, saving someone was my personal choice. I didn’t expect an apology or compensation, which is wrong too. But what these people did really made me angry. A situation that could have been easily resolved, do they really have to complicate it because of their status? Do they have to use their power to oppress others?"
Old Xu was also an official, and not at a low level, so he naturally understood their mindset. But now he has retired early and doesn’t get involved in these matters. Even if he did, he wouldn’t be able to change anything. From top to bottom, and bottom to top, it’s all the same. What can he change?
With a light sigh, Xu Zhenguo didn’t need Li Yifei to console him and said, "Yifei, since it happened, just... handle it, but be mindful of the boundaries to avoid causing trouble."
The so-called "causing trouble" was out of fear that Li Yifei’s actions might displease some big shot. Xu Zhenguo knew that his son-in-law was not an ordinary person anymore and could now reach the heavens. But, they still lived in Ning Province.
Li Yifei nodded and said, "Dad, don’t worry. Once this is handled, I’ll focus on helping treat you. As for these people, the reason for complicating things is just... to get some satisfaction. I reckon they’ll look for us soon. Today we can finish this up."
"Alright, you decide these things yourself!" Xu Zhenguo said.
Xu Yingying winked at Li Yifei in agreement.
After a while, Li Yifei saw Zhao Tiezhu call to say someone had come by, so he started heading back. Xu Yingying escorted him out, saying, "Husband, go for it."
"Haha, alright, I’ll do my best to deal with him," Li Yifei replied with a smile.
Leaving the hospital’s inpatient department, Li Yifei wiped his mouth, still tasting Xu Yingying’s lipstick, as she had just kissed him. Though they were an old married couple, such small affections made Li Yifei quite happy.
But Zhao Tiezhu hadn’t finished speaking when he hung up, and Li Yifei heard some commotion, so he hurried back. Without him, Zhao Tiezhu and the others might stand up to the opposition, but they’d lack confidence.
If District Chief Yue came personally, Zhao Tiezhu and his group wouldn’t be able to hold their ground.
However, it wasn’t District Chief Yue who came but his secretary, Su Meng. A graduate and having been Secretary to District Chief Yue for two years, he was close to the chief. Naturally, he knew some things. So when District Chief Yue didn’t hear from Wang Gang, he sent his secretary personally to check things out. His son was unreachable, and neither could he contact Wang Gang. He needed to know why.
Upon arriving, Su Meng quickly learned from outside that all the police were in the conference room, so he headed straight in. But at the entrance, he was blocked. The officers recognized Su Meng, as he was an influential figure in the District Committee. Departments usually gave him face. Under normal circumstances, these police officers wouldn’t dare stop him, but today... with Li Yifei backing them, they felt differently. As Su Meng approached, the officers exchanged glances, nodded, and decided to actively block his way, not letting Su Meng go upstairs.
"What’s going on?" Su Meng, from the south and somewhat small in stature, stopped and questioned as soon as he saw several police officers in uniform blocking his way.
"Hello, this is a police office area, please do not approach," a police officer said, pretending not to recognize him.
Su Meng frowned and said, "I’m Su Meng from the District Government Secretariat. I’m here to see your Director Wang."
"Director Wang?" The police exchanged glances again. The same officer shook his head and said, "Director Wang is not here."
"Just because you say he’s not here, he’s not?" Su Meng said with displeasure, raising his voice.
"Sorry, we are in the middle of an investigation. You can’t go in!" the officer said.
"Heh," Su Meng chuckled, even though he was angry. As a major secretary, he considered himself cultured, so he said, "I know Director Wang is inside, so, brother, just go and notify him that Su Meng is here to see him. Yes, District Chief Yue sent me!"
"Secretary Su, I’m sorry. This case is rather special, and we really can’t let you in. Besides, Director Wang is not here!" The officer shook his head, thinking to himself, damn, this case is indeed special. Our director is handcuffed by us; how could it not be special? Not only Director Wang, but your superior is also in trouble this time. Of course, he didn’t say this out loud, only thought about it.
Damn, are they really not giving face? Su Meng found it strange. While it’s impossible for everyone within the system to know about him, he’s been Secretary for two years, appearing in various scenarios. How come it’s ineffective now? This made him a bit annoyed, so he quickly said, "Brothers, don’t be so rigid. I’ve already said I know Director Wang is inside. I’m not trying to interfere with your work; you just need to convey the message. Director Wang will definitely come out to see me, especially since it’s a task given by District Chief Yue..."
"Secretary Su, Director Wang is really not here. No matter what you say, it won’t help. I definitely won’t lie to you!"
"You’re not acting like a friend," Su Meng’s face darkened. In the new development district’s various office locations, he hadn’t encountered such a situation before, being blocked at the entrance and failing to enter despite kind words. This was too much loss of face. Damn, do these few little police officers dare to act against me? I’ll make things difficult for you all later. Still, Su Meng said stiffly, "I suggest you listen to me. I am Su Meng, Secretary to District Chief Yue. Even if you don’t know me, you’d better consider my identity to avoid conflict later."
The police officer snorted inwardly, thinking, damn, pulling rank on me won’t work. If it were before, I would’ve ingratiated myself with you. But now your master is in trouble, so I won’t care about you. With that thought, he chuckled and said, "Secretary Su, we have rules and regulations. We can’t allow strangers in while there’s an active case. Even if you’re the Secretary to the District Chief, you can’t force your way in!"
"You damn little cop, do you think you’re that important?" Upon hearing this, Su Meng couldn’t hold back, pointing at him and cursing, "Do you really think you’re something?"
"Heh!" The insulted police officer sneered, "Secretary Su, watch your language, don’t say anything too unpleasant, it could undermine your dignity as a major secretary."
"If I didn’t have urgent matters today, I’d definitely hit you. What are you? Remember this, I will get in here today. Are you stopping people? I’ll call Wang Gang right now. If Wang Gang isn’t available, I’ll call your Deputy Director. You little runts think you can block me!" Su Meng said with some arrogance.
"Secretary Su, mind your status," the officer frowned.
"Mind your damn status!" Su Meng cursed aggressively, and angered enough to resort to physical confrontation. The other two officers immediately pushed him away slightly, ostensibly breaking up a fight, but were actually pushing him outside.
Su Meng was furious but helpless. Though his position was not low, he was merely at the Deputy Section Level, a lackey wielding someone else’s power. Without District Chief Yue, he’d be nothing. So he could only make futile threats, not daring to actually do anything.
As he walked out cursing, Su Meng saw a man approaching. The two glanced at each other, and Su Meng glared at the man, who seemed to ignore him and walked straight past.
This person was Li Yifei. Upon seeing Su Meng, Li Yifei knew this was probably the person sent. As he walked into the building, Su Meng, having just cursed inwardly, quickly turned around and watched Li Yifei stride inside. Su Meng muttered under his breath, damn, why does he get to go in?
He then hurriedly followed. Li Yifei didn’t stop, nodded to the three officers, and proceeded upstairs.
"Stop right there!" Su Meng shouted, seeing Li Yifei continue upstairs unimpeded. His mindset immediately became unbalanced, and he yelled at the officers, "Are you damn messing with me? You’re stopping me but letting this jerk in?"
"Secretary Su, mind your language," though they had just been insulted, the officers’ demeanor shifted when Su Meng cursed Li Yifei, their faces turning cold as they genuinely warned him.
"Screw you guys, what? Yeah, I’m swearing. You bastards, letting him stop me. I’ll call your Director and Deputy Director right now and ask how they manage their subordinates."
"Secretary Su, what you’re doing isn’t right!" the officer narrowed his eyes, discreetly clenching his fist.
Li Yifei paused, turned back, and looked down at Su Meng, calmly asking, "Who are you?"
"I’m Su Meng, Secretary to District Chief Yue. Who are you, damn it? When you talk to me, you’d better come down. I hate you tall guys the most."
"Secretary to District Chief Yue?" Li Yifei chuckled upon hearing this, descended a few steps, and asked, "What are you here for?"
"Here for what?" Su Meng thought the man was intimidated by his identity, so he stood tall and said, "I’m here to see Director Wang today. You all better let me through, or I’ll deal with you later."
"Secretary Su!"
"What?"
"Did you have a serious illness as a child?" Li Yifei inquired with a frown.
A serious illness as a child? Su Meng faced the man who didn’t look much older than himself and shook his head, "Never, I’m healthy."
"No, you must have had a serious illness, otherwise how could you be so brainless?" Li Yifei concluded. The three officers beside them immediately burst into laughter. They hadn’t expected Li Yifei to say this.
