Chapter 2479: Chapter 2543: Here Comes Another One
Who would have thought that Yang Jin would suddenly take off running, completely ignoring his image as a police officer, and just bolted for freedom. The onlookers all around were stunned. They’ve seen police in bad situations before, but they’ve never seen an officer escape like that for no reason, and it looked like a desperate flight.
Of course, just because he could run didn’t mean he would get away. Li Yifei was taken aback, not expecting him to be so shameless. Seeing him take off, Li Yifei hesitated for a moment before reacting. He kicked a pebble with a swift motion, and it flew with a whoosh, hitting the back of Yang Jin’s knee. Yang Jin, in full sprint, was struck and sent sprawling, landing hard on the concrete ground. Luckily, he didn’t hit his face.
"Damn!" If Yang Jin could speak, he would have cursed. Unfortunately, after rolling a few times on the ground, he experienced a brief wave of pain-induced dizziness, lying there on his back. A minute or two later, he recovered slightly, groaning in pain.
"Call for backup. None of you are getting away today," Li Yifei’s cold voice resounded. The three other police officers shivered, unable to even feel sorry for Yang Jin before worrying about themselves.
They realized they’d met a hard nut to crack today. They naturally didn’t believe Yang Jin’s fall was done by Li Yifei, but they also knew that solving this peacefully was impossible now. After some hesitation, they picked up their phones to call for backup. Police calling the police isn’t uncommon, but police calling 911 for rescue is.
Today, the three of them experienced it firsthand. Their colleagues on the other line almost thought they misheard. Once confirmed, they quickly said, "Hold tight, we’ll be right over."
"Better call the higher-ups as well. I’m afraid this isn’t something you can handle," suggested the officer making the call, sighing.
"What happened? Why’s it such a big deal that even the bosses need to come?" the person on the other end asked, bewildered.
"Stop asking. You’ll understand when you get here. Bring the bosses," was the reply.
"Alright. Hold tight and avoid any fights. It’s year-end, and they’re cracking down hard. Don’t hit a dead end," the person kindly reminded.
We’ve already hit that end, big bro, thought the caller as he put down his phone, on the verge of tears. They’ve seen fierce folks, but never someone this fierce and unreasonable, so relentless that it left them speechless.
Onlookers were all discussing the scene. Meanwhile, Li Yifei stood there arms crossed, looking indifferent. Yang Jin knew he was in trouble now. He’d fallen badly, and though he was in the hospital’s courtyard, prompt treatment wasn’t an option. The other three officers, feeling both wronged and responsible, knew they couldn’t escape punishment once the higher-ups arrived, regardless of how things were handled.
In the hospital room, Xu Yingying turned her gaze from the window back to Xu Zhenguo and said, "Dad, don’t get involved in such things again. You saved that woman, but did she take care of you?"
"Nonsense. That woman was also quite silly. She did say thanks at the time," Xu Zhenguo tried to console her.
Mother Xu chimed in, "She said thanks? You’re just fooling Yingying. Didn’t you say the woman ran off without even turning back?"
Xu Zhenguo moved his mouth, speechless as he looked at his wife. Why undermine him now? He did a good deed but the person he saved ran away. It indeed felt a bit frustrating.
Xu Yingying didn’t press further. She understood her father’s character. If such a situation occurred again, he’d still save the person. That’s just how he’s been for years, impossible to change. She was just annoyed at the one he saved. Would saying ’thanks’ kill you? Would bringing him to the hospital kill you? It’s not like they’d cheat you out of medical fees.
Downstairs, the three officers couldn’t bear it any longer. They approached Li Yifei and bowed, saying, "Sir, we owe you an apology. This is our colleague, Yang Jin, and he asked us to help without us knowing he’d cause this mess. If you trust us, let us handle the case. We’ll investigate and ensure you get a satisfactory answer."
"No need." Li Yifei turned his gaze over, giving them a light glance and said, "You’re partly responsible for this, but I’m not unreasonable. The one most responsible should bear the brunt, and those with smaller roles shouldn’t go unpunished."
"Thank you!" The three nodded, knowing this was already a decent outcome. Although Li Yifei hadn’t revealed his background, his demeanor and actions made it clear to them that he wasn’t someone simple.
Yang Jin, hearing this, cursed inwardly at the lack of loyalty from his colleagues, but he was powerless. With multiple injuries on his legs, arms, and body, enduring the pain without groaning was already a struggle.
Seven or eight minutes later, two police cars arrived, driving straight into the hospital. Seeing an officer lying on the ground with three standing beside him, a man confronting them, the responding officers rushed over. Leading them was an instructor, who had been in the bureau and, upon hearing the news, was initially stunned before deciding to come personally. After all, his bureau’s officers being hit was embarrassing to let circulate, and he felt it best to handle it himself.
Seeing the situation, the instructor signaled the others not to panic. He walked over with large strides and asked the three officers, "What’s going on? Wasn’t there a large-scale attack on police?"
"Officer, we... the thing is..." The policeman who called for backup thought for a moment and reported the situation truthfully, not daring to embellish it with exaggerations or add any dramatic flair. After listening, the officer glanced at Li Yifei and felt somewhat disgusted. These guys didn’t give any prior notice; if he had known beforehand, he wouldn’t have come. What a mess! How should he handle it with all eyes on him? If he defends his men, the word gets out, and he’ll get criticized; if he doesn’t, he’s got his subordinates acting like this...
He had already warned these brats to be more restrained in their actions, but they still created this situation of unjust accusations. The officer felt a wave of disgust and held back his irritation, turning to Li Yifei and saying, "Sir, perhaps this is all just a misunderstanding, so..."
"Who are you?" Li Yifei interrupted, knowing well that the officer was the one in charge. But as soon as the officer started with the word ’misunderstanding,’ Li Yifei was already displeased. If this is considered a misunderstanding, then what isn’t?
The officer froze for a moment, looking at Li Yifei with some annoyance, and said, "I’m Li Youcai, the officer of Qinghe Sub-bureau!"
Li Yifei remained calm and unresponsive. Li Youcai continued, "So, regarding this matter, I’ll take the people back to the bureau to investigate. Once the truth is uncovered, those who deserve punishment will be punished appropriately; we won’t tolerate anything. What do you think?"
Li Yifei gave Li Youcai a look as if he were looking at an idiot. Li Youcai was very displeased with such a gaze. He twisted his mouth and said, "If you have opinions, feel free to say them; I will consider them."
Li Yifei remained silent, not even bothering to look at him, which made Li Youcai unable to hold back. He spoke coldly, "What do you mean by not responding? Don’t tell me you didn’t hear what I just said."
"Heard it!" Li Yifei finally responded, but his next words made Li Youcai furious, as Li Yifei lightly said, "Who do you think you are?"
Who do you think you are! Li Youcai had said this before, and even the men he brought along had said it. While on duty, to show their distinction, saying such words seemed common, but today Li Youcai was told this, and it was in front of so many of his subordinates and the public, he immediately lost face.
The people around were in an uproar, those three policemen thought simultaneously, "Wow, lucky we didn’t stand out earlier. This guy is either completely reckless or has a mighty background, so much so that he won’t give the officer face, even confronting the officer directly due to his bias. At the same time, the three felt a bit relieved; with the officer stepping in, their minor offenses would be less severe.
The watching crowd immediately sensed that a great show was unfolding before them. What was initially just entertainment was now a drama because this man directly confronted their officer.
"You’d better watch your words and actions. It’s not scary to be arrogant when young, but to be arrogant and ignorant is." The officer said, lowering his face, and stared at Li Yifei. "Now, as a policeman, I’m asking you to come with us for investigation."
"Is that so?" Li Yifei still maintained a composed demeanor. Hearing their intention to take him back, his expression didn’t change—just his gaze made the officer very angry, terribly angry! "What if I don’t want to?"
"Even if you don’t want to, you have to." The officer said coldly. "I suspect you have connections with several violent cases."
Li Yifei laughed lightly, looked at the crowd, raised his hand, pointed at the officer, and said louder, "See this? This is the People’s Police. Their subordinates make mistakes, yet they refuse to admit it and try to protect them desperately. Now he’s rushing to put labels on me. What, if I still refuse, will you forcefully control me?" Li Yifei continued to be arrogant beyond measure.
The officer took a deep breath and sternly said, "That’s right, if you dare to continue resisting law enforcement with violence, then we have the right to forcibly restrain you."
"What if force doesn’t stop me?" Li Yifei asked with a playful look.
"Then we’ll shoot you!" the officer completely let loose.
Li Yifei nodded lightly and said, "Alright, I understand."
"Come on, take him back," the officer thought Li Yifei had surrendered and immediately turned to his subordinates for orders.
"Wait a minute." Li Yifei said, "I didn’t say I agree!"
"That’s for us to decide!" The officer sneered, continuing to order his subordinates, "Move immediately, take control of this dangerous person!"
