"Yingying, what happened?" As soon as Li Yifei saw Xu Yingying’s expression, he knew something was off.
"Mom just called saying Dad was hit by someone on the street and is now being taken to the hospital. She’s rushing over!" Xu Yingying said anxiously. With her practiced inner calm, she wouldn’t usually panic like this over just anything.
"Dad got hit?" Li Yifei’s heart jolted. He hurriedly said, "I’ll go back with you."
Xu Yingying had bought a house for her parents in Mile City, but the two elders still preferred going back to their own home. When they did come to Mile City, they stayed at Li Yifei’s house. During the few months Li Yifei had been practicing, the elders had visited twice, both times to see their grandson.
The child wasn’t Xu by name only; he was no different from their other grandson. The two elders genuinely loved this child. "Mom, what actually happened to Dad? Did you report it to the police?" Xu Yingying glared at her father and turned to her mother.
Mother Xu relaxed a bit, seeing them arrive. "Your dad was helping an old friend these past few days. Today, he went to buy something for him and got hit by a car on the way there!"
"It’s nothing serious. It should’ve been the green light, but this car suddenly darted out from the side. Seeing that it was going to hit a woman in front, I quickly pulled her away, but I couldn’t dodge and got hit myself." Seeing his daughter’s stern expression, Xu Zhenguo explained.
"Did the car run away?" Xu Yingying asked.
"The car didn’t run, but the driver did." Mother Xu said, "We reported it to the police. They should be investigating now. The car ended up hitting a tree by the road, but the people in the car ran away!"
"Dad, leave this to me. You just rest and heal. I’ll treat you a bit, and you’ll be good in a few days." "You better stay out of this, we’re questioning the involved party. It’s best if you step aside," the officer impatiently said, reaching to push Li Yifei aside.
The push didn’t move Li Yifei. The officer’s face turned cold, "If you keep this up, I’ll charge you with obstructing justice."
"Are you really a policeman?" Li Yifei asked.
"Wearing the uniform means we don’t need to show ID," the officer retorted confidently.
Li Yifei shook his head, "I just asked if you verified with witnesses, cameras, and the perpetrator?"
"No, the surveillance had broken, the perpetrator... there’s no conclusion yet. As for the crowd, didn’t I tell you? Kid, I’m telling you for the last time, step back, or I’ll cuff you and take you in!"
"Heh." Li Yifei chuckled and nodded, turned back to Xu Zhenguo, and said, "Dad, rest well here. I’ll go sort this out."
Xu Yingying nodded, "Alright, be careful, dear."
"Don’t worry," Li Yifei gave her a reassuring glance, then grabbed the officer’s shirt, swiftly lifting him and walking out.
