Chapter 270: Chapter 270: Wedding Night, Can I Escape?

Bright red silk satin cascaded like a waterfall, draping down the sides from the top of the bed canopy.

The overwhelming red dazzled Ji Qingwu’s eyes. She squinted, taking in the scene before her.

She had simply fallen asleep and woken up right here on her wedding bed.

She had no memory of how she had come to the Wei Family, nor of what had happened in between.

A warm, yellow glow was reflected on the bed canopy. On a small table beside the bed sat a pair of tall red candles, their flames flickering.

Had Wei Ting lit the Dragon and Phoenix Candle himself? ’What kind of wedding ceremony was this?’

Once the spell of dizziness passed, Ji Qingwu figured out why she had fallen into such a deep sleep.

It was because Yu Wen Tianqing had bribed the Imperial Hospital to drug Yuan Heng. She had taken a sip of that medicinal soup, thinking at the time that she would just sleep for a day and a night, and hadn’t taken it seriously.

’I wonder if Mrs. Qiao and Lan Zhi saw me unconscious this morning. They must have thought I’d done something rash. They must still be worried about me.’

The windows in the wedding chamber were veiled with thin red gauze.

Ji Qingwu couldn’t see the situation outside clearly, but she could hear the growing clamor of the banquet.

The maidservant guarding the door saw that she was awake and immediately approached her, exclaiming with delight, "Madam, you’re awake! I’ll go call the General back right away."

Hearing this title, Ji Qingwu furrowed her brow, unaccustomed to it. She sat up straight in the bed.

"That’s not necessary. What’s your name?"

"This servant’s name is Xuemei. Greetings, Madam."

The maid seemed level-headed. Ji Qingwu asked, "Xuemei, do you know where my handmaid, Lan Zhi, is?"

Xuemei replied, "Madam, are you referring to the young lady who accompanied you here? She is currently in the kitchen, overseeing the brewing of your medicine."

Ji Qingwu felt a momentary sense of relief, but then asked in confusion, "What medicine is she brewing?"

Xuemei said, "The medicine is for you, Madam. Since you were unwell, today’s wedding ceremony was simplified. The General specifically summoned an Imperial Physician from the Imperial Hospital, who prescribed this medicine for you."

’Medicine from the Imperial Hospital? I don’t dare drink that again.’

Ji Qingwu looked at her and said, "Xuemei, go and call Lan Zhi back. I have something for her."

Xuemei bowed her head in acknowledgement and left.

Just as she stepped outside, Han Zhi, who was also on guard, asked her, "Sister Mei, is the new madam awake?"

Xuemei said, "Yes. Madam wants her dowry maid to come over. Han Zhi, you go to the kitchen and tell her to come back."

Han Zhi muttered, "The new madam is so unwell right after arriving. What will we do in the future?"

Xuemei scolded, "Is Madam someone you can gossip about?"

Han Zhi was Xuemei’s distant cousin, and the two were close. She was only an errand girl stationed outside and wasn’t allowed to enter the room to serve, so she had not yet seen what Ji Qingwu looked like.

Han Zhi asked curiously, "Sister Mei, the General carried the new madam in. Her head was covered with a veil the whole time, so I haven’t seen her face. Is she pretty?"

Xuemei said, "You’ll know when you see her. Now, hurry up! If you make Madam wait, you’ll be in for it."

When Wei Ting announced he wanted to marry Ji Qingwu, Madam Wei had been vehemently against it. But after a long talk between the grandmother and grandson that lasted three hours, the old lady finally relented.

Although the wedding was prepared in a hurry, it was still quite complete.

But no one expected Ji Qingwu to suddenly fall mysteriously ill. Countless doctors were summoned to see her, but none could figure out the cause.

Wei Ting had even hauled an Imperial Physician from the palace onto his horse and brought him back to the mansion, but even he couldn’t find anything wrong.

Her pulse was normal; she just wouldn’t wake up.

And so, she was brought from the Ji Mansion to the Wei Family home. Even the ceremony of bowing to Heaven and Earth was skipped, and she was sent directly to the bridal chamber.

Madam Wei, who had been waiting in the main hall for the couple to pay their respects, cried out "What a curse!" several times.

With no one else in the wedding chamber, Ji Qingwu lifted a corner of the quilt, took out some red dates and longans to fill her stomach, and deliberately avoided the Peanuts.

After eating something, Ji Qingwu’s dizziness completely subsided.

She put on her embroidered slippers and got out of bed. The hem of her bright red wedding gown was wide and trailed on the floor. She lifted her skirt as she walked to the bronze mirror.

As she walked, a crisp tinkling sound came from above her head—the sound of the beaded tassels on her golden crown striking one another. Her slender, pale wrists and neck were adorned with several gold bracelets and opulent strings of pearls.

Ji Qingwu had just reached the bronze mirror and hadn’t even had a chance to sit down when she was startled by her own reflection.

She had never worn such vibrant makeup. It was different from the couple of times she had deliberately made herself look alluring.

Perhaps to conceal her pale complexion, an especially heavy blush had been applied to her cheeks. The rosy flush, paired with the bright red on her lips, was at least passable.

Ji Qingwu walked to the window and gently lifted the thin gauze. She could see that the outside was already shrouded in twilight. The splendid clouds on the horizon were the same color as her wedding robe.

In a little while, the sky would turn completely dark.

’This wedding night... how am I going to get through it?’

The door was suddenly pulled open. Ji Qingwu immediately turned to look, and the rhombus-shaped, jade-inlaid gold earrings on her earlobes swayed with her movement.

The name "Lan Zhi" was on the tip of Ji Qingwu’s tongue, but she didn’t get to say it.

The person at the door saw her and froze in place.

"You’re awake?" The man’s voice was hoarse with drink.

But his eyes showed no sign of intoxication; they were surprisingly bright as he stared at her.

Wei Ting had been plied with a great deal of wine by his close subordinates. Two men were behind him, escorting him back to the bridal chamber.

The two men peeked out from behind Wei Ting. Excited from the alcohol, their voices were loud.

"Hey! General, the new sister-in-law is awake! Let us have a look too, huh?"

"I’ve long heard of Ji Wu’s name! I was away on military duty and not in Lin’an, so I missed the scene where eighteen military generals from all over the court sought her hand in marriage. Quick, let me also—"

Their mouths gaped open, and they swallowed the rest of their words.

The bride, who was supposed to be sitting shyly on the bed, was now leaning against the window sill.

The room was filled with red, but it all served as a backdrop for her. Her beautiful eyes were captivating, haunting one’s thoughts.

Ji Qingwu was also staring back at them, slightly surprised.

Seeing this, Wei Ting took a breath, shoved the two men out with extreme speed, and even gave one of them who was reluctant to move a kick before quickly shutting the door.

The loud SLAM of the closing door was enough to shake one of the red silk banners loose from the rafters.

Wei Ting turned around and strode towards Ji Qingwu.

His tone was gentle and his eyes were bright as he asked, "When did you wake up?"

He removed the flower made of red silk from his chest and casually placed it on the table.

Ji Qingwu stood by the window without answering, simply watching him with a calm expression.

Wei Ting was dressed in a red wedding robe, his golden crown and jade belt a matching set to hers.

He must have drunk a lot in the front hall. A faint blush colored his cheekbones, and even from where she stood, she could smell the strong scent of alcohol.

Wei Ting could naturally see her guarded expression, and his voice held a teasing note.

"Did you just wake up and are already planning to jump out the window and escape?"

Ji Qingwu asked, "Can I?"

Wei Ting remained composed. He quirked his lips, a dark glint in his narrow eyes.
