Chapter 265: Wearing a mask again

After finishing his dinner, Adam dozed off in the chair.

Kyle carried him to the bedroom, gently laid him on the bed, and pulled a blanket over him.

"I should text Blake and let him know Adam is staying over," he muttered.

Naturally, in that state Adam wouldn’t be going back.

As he stepped out of the room, he found Amanda already picking up her bag.

"Hmm? It’s only eight. Leaving so soon?" he asked.

Amanda nodded with a sheepish smile.

"I’m having dinner with my relatives. My cousin invited all of us to celebrate his wedding anniversary."

Kyle let out a soft hum.

"So that’s why your phone kept ringing."

She nodded again.

"They’ve all arrived already. But it’s fine. It’s not like my absence would stop them from talking."

Amanda only needed to make an appearance and stay for the meal. If her father hadn’t insisted, she would have happily spent the entire evening with Kyle.

Especially knowing he would soon be leaving for the academy.

She stepped closer and slipped her hands into his.

"Tomorrow, we’ll have the whole day to ourselves."

After joining the academy, Kyle would only be able to return home on weekends. Naturally, the time they could spend together would become much more limited.

And that would continue for months.

Amanda wanted to make every moment of tomorrow count.

A faint smile appeared on Kyle’s face as he lifted her hand and gently kissed her fingers.

"As much as I want to plan our date tomorrow, I have a feeling that if I do, something will come up and we’ll end up spending the day apart."

Amanda couldn’t help but agree, no matter how much it hurt.

Too many of their plans had fallen through because of her work. Even recently, when Kyle was supposed to teach Maya, she had been urgently called back to the base.

With a helpless smile, she said, "Then let’s just hope lady luck is on our side tomorrow and we get to spend at least one peaceful day together."

Kyle nodded in agreement.

Soon, the two of them began strolling toward the entrance, their hands intertwined.

After a brief silence, Amanda suddenly asked, "By the way... why did Adam say you were cheating on me back then?"

She looked up at him, her eyes narrowing suspiciously.

Kyle chuckled.

"Veronica dropped me off since she was invited to that discussion as well. He saw her and made things up."

Amanda looked surprised.

"She was part of the counseling too?" She believed the Commander was still recovering, but she was actually with Kyle.

"No. She was there for something else. But she somehow barged into my counseling session as well."

Now that he thought about it, he had never asked what Veronica discussed after he left.

"Hmm..."

Amanda simply hummed, her expression giving nothing away.

Soon, they reached the door. Kyle opened it for her and smiled.

"Drive safe."

Amanda returned the smile and nodded before stepping outside.

Just as Kyle was about to close the door, she suddenly called out,

"Oh, wait. I forgot something."

He paused and slowly opened the door again, assuming she had forgotten her keys.

Instead, Amanda leaned forward and gently pecked his lips.

"There. Now I can finally leave."

She gave him a playful wink before hurrying toward the elevator, her hair swaying with each hurried step.

Kyle remained rooted to the spot, completely caught off guard.

A helpless smile slowly spread across his face as he lowered his head.

Seriously, this girl never missed a chance to toy with his fragile heart.

Shaking his head with a smile, Kyle closed the door and walked back inside before heading to his room.

Adam was sleeping soundly, hugging a pillow while mumbling something incoherent in his sleep.

Kyle let out a quiet sigh and was about to text Blake about Adam staying over when, to his surprise, his phone rang.

It was Blake.

Picking up the call, Kyle smiled.

"Quite busy these days, aren’t you?"

He had called Blake that morning as well, hoping to talk before the counseling session, but the call had gone unanswered.

{I was tied up in a meeting. Anyway, how did it go?}

Blake sounded a little exhausted, so Kyle decided not to tease him any further.

"It went well. They tested me a little, but I passed. I’m officially part of the academy now."

{That’s great news. Though, to be honest, the test was just a formality. They would’ve accepted you anyway.}

He said something similar to what Amanda mentioned. Naturally, being an anomalous Nightwalker they wouldn’t have let Kyle fail the exams and become a rogue Nightwalker again.

"Yeah, that’s true. But let me tell you, the assessment wasn’t easy at all," Kyle said with a weary sigh.

Holding back his strength had been far more difficult than he expected. He had lost count of how many times he came close to knocking someone unconscious with a single punch.

Especially when they were so exposed to his eyes. First experience at holding back taught him things which he barely wanted to make a part of his habit.

He hadn’t checked the examiners’ stats, but from what he had sensed during the assessment, they were at best third-grade Nightwalkers.

Did Russel underestimate him or were those students his best option?

Kyle believed it wasn’t about the students’ strength and what they could offer in the first place.

{Regardless, you passed. That’s all that matters.} Blake said, breaking his train of thoughts.

After a brief pause, Blake asked,

{Have you bought all the supplies?} He had Lara help him buy things while uniforms was something he bought with Amanda.

"Yeah. I’ll sort through everything in a bit. Oh, and Adam’s staying over tonight, so let everyone know."

{He’s with you? Uncle’s been really worried. He even called me.}

Kyle scratched the back of his head.

"That’s strange. He didn’t call me."

{That’s because you recently changed your number. He probably still has the old one. Anyway, I’ll let everyone know.}

Kyle let out a quiet hum in acknowledgment.

A few moments later, the call ended.

Kyle walked over to his cupboard and carefully went through the list, making sure everything had already been packed.

"Hmm... toothbrush, shirts, shoes... yeah, everything’s here."

The academy would provide books and a few other necessities. He had only been instructed to bring a single weapon, which would be inspected before he was issued a permit.

That left one question.

Would Aquilla be considered his one permitted weapon, or would it count as a skill instead?

He decided to ask someone knowledgeable once he arrived at the academy.

For now...

"I need to prepare."

He took out a black jacket with a hood and slipped a face mask into his pocket.

Walking to the window, Kyle gazed at the silvery moonlight spilling across the city.

He drew a slow, steady breath.

Tonight, he would once again walk the path of a rogue.

’I hope this is worth the risk.’
