Chapter 166: Chapter 166: Taming the Shadows

Dante stared into the dense dark tree line of Rain Valley.

The massive shattered remains of the Rain Demons littered the clearing behind him. The air still smelled heavily of burnt wood and sweet toxic nectar.

"She is not alone," the voice of Nyx echoed through the private party comms and sounded tense.

"The tracking marker shows another high-tier player signature standing right next to her. It is Xerxes."

Dante frowned.

The Guild Master of the Blood Throne.

He had bypassed the chaotic fight in the clearing, utilized high-level stealth mechanics to slip deeper into the grove, and directly pursued the rogue NPC.

"He really wants that pet," Dante murmured.

"Boss," Casanova asked nervously. He stood a safe distance behind Dante.

"Should we just let him have it? The Boomshade Trickster is clearly a psychopath. She dropped a tree on Silas and then tried to gas us. I do not think she is house-trained."

"She is a Level 45 Rogue Sylvan," Dante corrected him.

"She possesses reality manipulation and high-tier illusion magic. If Xerxes binds her, the Blood Throne gains an untargetable scouting asset capable of bypassing all systemic detection arrays."

Dante couldn’t let a major syndicate secure an asset that broken.

He already had his hands full dealing with Vanguard’s Legacy. He didn’t need Xerxes acquiring an invisible spy network.

"We are going in," Dante ordered. "Mei, stay close. Lila, keep your mana pool topped off."

He didn’t activate [Velocity Paradox]. He needed to approach carefully.

He drew the [Dawn-Breaker Blade] and walked slowly into the dense shadowed grove.

The environment grew significantly darker.

The thick canopy of the ancient peach trees completely blocked out the golden sky. The only illumination came from the faint pulsing pink light of the falling blossoms.

They walked for five minutes and followed the coordinates Nyx relayed through the comms.

The Intuition stat of Dante flared.

They reached a small enclosed glade. The trees here were massive, and their roots formed a localized elevated platform of twisted wood.

Standing on the platform was the Mischievous Boomshade Trickster.

She wasn’t smiling her wide malicious smile.

She was backed against the trunk of a massive tree, and her solid black eyes were wide with genuine panic.

Standing ten feet in front of her was Xerxes.

The leader of the Blood Throne was no longer projecting an aura of lazy unbothered wealth.

His deep crimson robes were slightly scorched from the earlier explosion, but his posture was aggressive and commanding. He held a glowing silver-bound parchment in his hand.

[Item Identified: Forced Subjugation Contract]

[Tier: Divine]

"A Divine-tier binding scroll," Dante noted quietly and observed from the shadows of the tree line. "He is not asking for her consent. He is going to force the system to overwrite her autonomy."

Standing directly beside Xerxes was his chief lieutenant, a heavily scarred rogue gripping two poisoned daggers.

"You belong to the Blood Throne now, glitch," Xerxes sneered and held the glowing silver scroll out toward the terrified Boomshade Trickster.

"I will strip away your chaotic parameters and mold you into a perfect obedient shadow."

The Boomshade Trickster hissed, and her small purple hands glowed with pink illusion magic. "I will not serve a weak loud man! I will break your mind!"

She fired a concentrated beam of pink hallucinogenic pollen directly at the face of Xerxes.

The Guild Master didn’t even flinch. He didn’t dodge.

He casually raised his free hand and activated a high-tier consumable. A shimmering translucent barrier of red light materialized in front of him.

The pink pollen hit the barrier and instantly dissipated into harmless dust.

"Did you think I would track a Sylvan rogue into the deep woods without consuming absolute status immunity elixirs?" Xerxes laughed mockingly.

"Your illusions are useless against me. You have no raw damage output. You are mathematically defenseless."

Xerxes crushed the silver scroll in his hand.

A heavy glowing silver chain erupted from the crushed parchment and shot rapidly through the air like a striking snake. It wrapped tightly around the wrists of the Boomshade Trickster.

The NPC shrieked in absolute terror and struggled violently against the chain. The system interface violently hitched and prepared to execute the forced subjugation protocol.

Dante didn’t wait.

He didn’t yell a warning. He didn’t dramatically announce his presence.

[Skill Executed: Phantom Dash]

Dante vanished from the tree line.

He materialized instantly directly behind the heavily scarred lieutenant standing next to Xerxes.

BOOM.

The sonic boom of his materialization detonated point-blank.

The avatar of the lieutenant locked up instantly, and the bright yellow stun icon flashed above his head. He didn’t even have time to turn around.

Dante swung the [Dawn-Breaker Blade] in a brutal horizontal decapitation strike.

The Gold-tier weapon backed by his massive Level 71 base stats and the guaranteed critical hit from his [Predator’s Eye] passive sheared cleanly through the neck of the rogue.

[-45,000! Critical Hit! OVERKILL!]

The health bar of the lieutenant vanished. He exploded into a massive shower of blue pixels and was instantly deleted from the server.

The concussive force of the sudden execution blew the crimson robes of Xerxes back.

The Guild Master spun around.

His eyes widened in absolute unfiltered horror as he saw the towering dark-armored Outworlder standing exactly where his elite bodyguard had been a fraction of a second ago.

"Dan," Xerxes gasped and took a panicked step backward.

The sudden interruption completely shattered his concentration.

The glowing silver chain wrapped around the wrists of the Boomshade Trickster flickered and snapped and dissolved into harmless light.

The forced subjugation protocol failed.

"You should have stayed in the desert, Xerxes," Dante said. His voice was entirely flat and devoid of emotion.

Xerxes didn’t try to negotiate. He didn’t try to fight.

He was a Guild Master, but his entire combat strategy relied on his elite escorts and massive wealth. He wasn’t equipped to solo the most dangerous anomaly on the server.

He immediately reached into his robes and pulled out a glowing blue teleportation crystal.

"The Blood Throne will remember this!" Xerxes yelled and crushed the crystal in his hand.

A swirling blue portal instantly opened behind him and sucked him out of the glade before Dante could trigger another strike.

Xerxes was gone. The threat was neutralized.

Dante slowly sheathed the [Dawn-Breaker Blade]. He didn’t care about the empty threat.

Xerxes was a hoarder, not a warlord. He wouldn’t risk his massive treasury on a costly drawn-out guild war.

Dante turned his attention back to the Boomshade Trickster.

The Rogue Sylvan was still backed against the massive tree trunk.

She was panting heavily, and her solid black eyes darted between Dante and the spot where the lieutenant had just been vaporized.

"You saved me," the Boomshade Trickster whispered. Her voice lost its high-pitched mocking tone and was replaced by genuine confusion.

"I saved myself a future headache," Dante corrected her smoothly.

He didn’t draw a binding scroll. He didn’t demand her servitude.

"You are free to go," Dante said and gestured to the deep woods.

"Go find a darker corner of the valley to hide in. If you stay near the arrival zones, another guild will eventually catch you."

The Boomshade Trickster didn’t run. She stayed completely still and stared at his glowing dark armor.

Her malicious playful demeanor completely vanished.

She recognized that the entity standing in front of her wasn’t a standard player. He was an apex predator who had just casually swatted away a Guild Master.

"You are strong," the Boomshade Trickster said softly. "You do not need an army."

She took a slow hesitant step forward away from the tree trunk.

"I do not want to hide," she stated. Her solid black eyes locked onto Dante. "The system traps me in this grove. It forces me to play tricks. I want to see the world burn."

She didn’t raise her hands to cast a spell. She didn’t attack.

She initiated the localized Master-Servant dialogue protocol again.

But she didn’t direct it at Dante.

She looked past the shoulder of Dante. Her gaze fell entirely on Nyx who had just stepped out of the tree line with the rest of the squad.

Nyx froze and adjusted her dark glasses. "Why is she looking at me?"

"Because you are quiet," the Boomshade Trickster said. She walked past Dante and stopped directly in front of the analyst. "You watch. You calculate. You do not shout like the shiny men."

The system interface popped up directly in front of the face of Nyx.

[System Event: NPC ’Mischievous Boomshade Trickster’ has initiated a Master-Servant Contract.]

[Do you accept?]

Nyx stared at the prompt. She looked at Dante.

"Dante," Nyx whispered completely baffled. "She is offering me the contract."

"Take it," Dante nodded.

"You are an analyst. A untargetable stealth asset is exactly what you need for reconnaissance. And it keeps her out of the hands of Xerxes."

Nyx didn’t hesitate. She tapped ’Accept’.

The system interface flashed a brilliant pulsing violet light.

[Master-Servant Contract Formed.]

[Pet Acquired: Mischievous Boomshade Trickster]

[Grade: 5]

The Boomshade Trickster didn’t shrink or turn into a wisp of light like Aura.

She remained her normal size, but the chaotic aggressive aura surrounding her completely smoothed out. She bowed deeply to Nyx.

"I serve the shadows," the Boomshade Trickster murmured.

"I am going to call you Violet," Nyx decided and looked at the purple hue of the skin of the trickster.

Violet smiled. It wasn’t a malicious grin this time. It was a sharp dangerous smirk. "Violet is acceptable, Master."

"Well," Casanova laughed and walked into the glade.

"That worked out perfectly. Nyx gets a high-tier stealth pet, we did not have to fight a Guild Master, and nobody got turned into a bleeding statue."

Before the squad could celebrate the acquisition, the Intuition stat of Dante flared again.

It wasn’t a player. It wasn’t an assassin.

It was the heavy rhythmic thudding of dozens of massive wooden roots pulling themselves out of the earth.

Dante turned around.

The dense tree line surrounding the glade wasn’t empty.

The hallucinogenic trap of the Boomshade Trickster had failed earlier, but she had been running deeper into the grove for a reason.

She had led them directly into the heart of the spawn zone.

Dozens of massive towering Rain Demons stepped out of the shadows and completely encircled the small glade.

"Uh oh," Violet squeaked and hid quickly behind Nyx. "I might have accidentally agitated the grove earlier."

"You think?" Mei yelled and raised her colossal frying pan.

"Formation!" Dante barked and drew the [Dawn-Breaker Blade]. "Lila, prepare the gravity! Mei, hold the line!"

The demons raised their massive razor-sharp scythe-arms in perfect synchronization.

The true battle of Rain Valley was about to begin.
