Chapter 287: The First Phase Of Operation Quiet Anvil Was Complete

Karven Spire did not become safe overnight, but by the next morning, it had stopped getting worse.

That alone felt like progress.

The breach site in Vortan Redoubt remained sealed under quarantine, and the entire district around the ruined plaza had been locked down by remote systems, drones, and sealed patrol units.

Elowen’s environmental teams kept working through the residue samples, while Eirenne searched the Vhaloric archives for anything that looked like a real containment method rather than another warning written by someone who had already lost three stations.

For now, there was no trace of a second manifestation.

That did not mean Aurelian trusted the place.

It only meant he did not need to order it burned from orbit.

Karven Spire’s planetary grade had not suffered a catastrophic drop, though the environmental readings around Vortan had worsened.

Elowen estimated that if the quarantine held and no hidden residue remained in the drainage layers, the planet would recover with time.

The capital’s lower districts still needed treatment after the black reserve incident, and Vortan Redoubt would likely remain restricted for months, perhaps years, but the wider planet had survived.

That mattered.

It meant Karven Spire could still become useful instead of turning into a cursed warning marker on the map.

Aurelian reviewed the first full recovery estimate in the Black Crown’s briefing room with Astra, Eirenne, Elowen, Astercourt, and several family specialists.

Elowen looked tired, but her voice stayed steady as she explained the planetary condition.

"The main biosphere is intact. The industrial damage is manageable. The black reserve contamination was stopped early enough that we can clean the affected systems, and the Vortan residue is isolated. The planet will need help, though. Soil treatment, water audits, atmospheric filtering around industrial zones, and strict control of any site connected to old Kharov relic storage."

Astercourt folded her arms. "So, everything is expensive."

Elowen gave a faint smile. "Yes."

"Wonderful."

Aurelian looked at the planetary map. "Can Karven Spire support a forward base while recovering?"

"Yes," Elowen said. "The orbital station and relay can be used almost immediately. The planet can provide industrial support after inspection, but I would not yet rely on local food production for the occupation forces. Too much of the agricultural network was controlled through the Kharov ration policy, and I do not trust the records."

Neris, joining by voice only because she was apparently eating while reviewing supply manifests, said, "I already assumed the records were lying."

Aurelian almost smiled. "Good."

"They always lie when food is involved."

Astercourt nodded. "That is sadly true."

Karven Spire’s starport had survived the battle mostly intact, and that made the system far more useful than anyone expected after the abyssal incident.

The military dockyard needed repair, but the relay core worked, the cargo arms could support fleet traffic, and several fuel storage rings had been captured before the Kharov could sabotage them.

With the relay under Eirenne’s control, the system could now serve as a shield in front of Larkspur Haven and a listening post pointed toward deeper Kharov space.

The first phase of Operation Quiet Anvil was complete.

It had taken less than two days from fleet movement to planetary containment, though nobody in the room treated that as simple.

The victory had been fast because the Arcturus family brought overwhelming force, because Eirenne kept the communications dead, because the Kharov had been surprised, and because several disasters had been stopped before they spread.

Fast did not mean easy.

And it certainly did not mean clean.

Cassian did not intend to stay at Karven Spire longer than necessary. Once the relay, starport, and main planetary command structure were stable, the expedition would move into the second phase.

This phase would be different. The family’s main force would remain ready, but individual branch fleets and March units would begin taking assigned targets in the outer belt, clearing smaller systems, securing mining areas, and preparing the way toward Virell’s Reach.

Aurelian’s role changed with that.

The Crownward March was no longer only receiving help from the family. It had to start acting like the authority over the region.

That meant supervising allies, training younger commanders, and letting others fight under his command structure without letting them make a mess.

He was not sure which part would be most annoying.

Astercourt had already guessed.

"All of it," she said.

Aurelian looked at her. "I did not ask aloud."

"You looked like you were about to."

Eirenne smiled gently. "She is improving at prediction."

"She is worsening my mood," Aurelian replied.

Astercourt did not look sorry.

The next assigned target for the March-linked detachment was not Virell’s Reach itself, but the Serrow Belt, a minor three-system holding belonging to a Kharov viscount named Targan Rell.

The name meant little to Aurelian at first, but the location mattered. The Serrow Belt sat between Karven Spire and Virell’s Reach, covering two mining systems and one developed habitable world called Nhalis.

Nhalis was not as important as Virell’s Reach, but it was not useless either. It had a cold-water ocean world with several industrial islands, scattered orbital stations, and a small but stubborn Kharov fleet.

According to the first captured records, Targan Rell had been hiding more strength than he reported to Varensk, likely because he did not fully trust the larger Kharov lords around him.

Aurelian understood that instinct.

It just would not save him.

Eirenne displayed the updated intelligence in the briefing room.

"Earlier records claimed Targan Rell had approximately eight hundred warships across the Serrow Belt. The newer Karven Spire archives suggest the number is closer to two thousand six hundred, with a higher-than-expected ratio of Tier III hulls and several near-Tier IV command vessels. Most of his true fleet strength is docked around Nhalis rather than spread through the mining systems."

Rhoswen, now fully cleared and back aboard the Black Crown, leaned forward with interest. "So he was hiding his ships."

"Yes," Eirenne said. "Likely from his own superior."

Rhoswen nodded. "Smart."

"Not smart enough," Astra said.

Rhoswen looked at her. "That was mean."

"It was accurate."

Aurelian studied the map. "Why hide that much?"
