Chapter 141: Sword God
The golden chest suddenly stood directly over Lukas’s shoulders and said in a knowing voice, "Of course it is me. Who else could it be? Were you expecting someone else?"
The chest did not wait for Lukas to speak. Instead, it looked around with a slightly surprised gaze.
"Indeed, you are the chosen inheritor of the Death God. To stumble upon the legacy of the legendary Sword God as well... as expected."
Lukas had been focusing on the chest the entire time, so when he heard the mention of another god, a chill ran down his spine.
The trials from the Death God’s inheritance were still fresh in his mind. The fact that he managed to walk out of there alive was only because of a single reason: he was meant for it. Because of his undead nature, he was not immediately turned into bones... but there was nothing about him that a Sword God would fancy.
So why did he arrive here? More importantly, wasn’t this suspicious? To find the inheritance of one god after another... it felt as if he was being led by an unseen force.
Countless thoughts flashed through his head, but none showed on his face.
The White Knight Guild Master, whose eyes had been on the chest the entire time, finally spoke.
"Do you know this monster?"
Lukas simply nodded with a forced smile on his face, giving a vague answer. He himself did not know much about the golden chest, but he would be lying if he denied knowing anything about it.
After this short interaction, the golden chest fell completely silent, not bothering to speak at all, seemingly waiting for something.
On the other hand, the expressions of both Lukas and the White Knight Guild Master turned heavy. They could feel the surrounding atmosphere slowly turning suffocating. Just as the pressure reached a tipping point, the golden chest opened its mouth.
"Both the Death God and the Sword God were close friends, sharing life and death together. When the world first descended into the method developed by the Death God, he was the first to step forward and take his side. From then on, their bond was forged, and in the end, they lived and died together."
The golden chest’s expression turned slightly grim by the end of his words. It appeared he genuinely missed his master.
Lukas did not have the time to care about the chest’s emotions. Instead, he focused ahead, looking at a slight distortion in space. Lukas almost would have missed it if he were not paying attention.
One wrong move, and it would catch his notice.
From the White Knight Guild Master’s perspective, she was also looking at this scene. It appeared he was the only one who had noticed this particular change.
Under her watchful gaze, the distortion continued to grow like ripples in water, moving outward as if fully stirred. The space cracked like a mirror.
"Is this a portal...?"
For some reason, Lukas found the crack to be strangely familiar. When he could summon Tommy, a crack like this would also appear.
The golden chest also turned toward the newly opened portal.
"So it finally begins, huh?"
Because the Sword God was as straightforward as the Death God, he valued urgency and had an extreme single-minded mindset. One wrong move, and he would not care that you were the precious inheritor of his friend’s legacy.
Lukas acted as if he had not heard those words at all. His eyes were glued to the portal.
A moment passed, and a fully armored knight, roughly six feet tall, fell from the ground with a booming sound. The earth rippled as if something heavy had hit its surface. The next moment, the two eyes hidden behind the iron mask seemed to lock directly onto the figures of Lukas and the White Knight Guild Master.
"Alright, this is getting far enough. I am healing back, trying to survive as long as possible. There are no exits here — you will either pass the trial or die trying. Nothing in between."
The golden chest said those words and did not continue further. Soon, it disappeared into Lukas’s shadow once more, coming and going as he pleased.
Lukas did not try to stop it. Although he did not know much about the chest, he knew it was extremely moody. There was nothing he could say to stop it from doing whatever it wanted.
While he was lost in these thoughts, one by one the sword-wielding knight moved toward them.
Thud! Thud!
With each step the knight took, the earth shook and the air vibrated.
Its complete clean armor reflected the light falling on its surface, and as it stood in the air, the atmosphere screamed like a banshee.
Just as he was thinking about how he was going to deal with this monstrous thing, the White Knight Guild Master took a step forward, an icy expression on her face.
"You stay back. I will deal with this."
Perfect.
Lukas almost exclaimed out loud. This was the best outcome he could wish for.
He had been thinking that the guild master would force him to take action, exposing their relationship, but now that she was going to deal with the monster on her own, it was perfect.
The next moment, his gaze once again turned to the monster ahead.
This knight is giving me a very bad vibe. Not a single drop of starlight in its frame, yet why is it giving me such a dangerous feeling?
Lukas instinctively frowned.
While in the rest of the realm, star energy seemed to have frozen to a halt, in this knight’s frame he could not sense the presence of any star energy at all. As such, it became difficult to judge the knight’s exact strength.
Maybe the White Knight Guild Master could also sense this, and that was why she did not want Lukas to throw his life away.
Just as this thought appeared in his head, he shook it away.
No way. She is not that kind.
The spot where she grabbed his throat was still hurting. Anyone who could hurt him like that would not be kind.
...
The White Knight Guild Master did not know what he was thinking. All this time, her eyes were on the knight as it moved closer. Slowly, her two slender eyebrows gathered into a tight frown.
There is not a single weak spot...
After years of battle, her battle sense had grown so sharp that she could almost sense the weakness of her opponents. But from this knight’s frame, she felt nothing.
Before she could continue thinking, the knight finally arrived. Its two eyes, filled with glaring killing intent, locked onto hers.
"Step aside and accept death!"
The words thundered in her ears without any warning.
Although the knight spoke those words, it did not wait for the White Knight Guild Master to unsheathe her sword. A faint whine screeched through the air as the sword came crashing down.
Boom!
A deafening explosion sounded as the ground cracked, sending stones and gravel flying in every direction.
Lukas’s face fell.
Is she hit...?
For a moment, he thought the knight had caught her. But once the smoke cleared, the White Knight Guild Master was revealed, standing just one step away from where the sword had landed completely unscathed.
The knight’s blade was buried deep into the sword’s surface, completely missing her. However, there was not a trace of happiness on her face, only complete solemnity.
As the distance between her and the knight was still great, she took her stance and punched hard, using as much strength as she could muster. Since she could not make use of star energy, physical strength was the only thing she could rely on.
Bang!
Another loud bang echoed, shaking Lukas’s eardrums. But this time, there was nothing.
The knight did not even move a single step, as if the White Knight Guild Master’s attack had caused it no trouble at all.
Noticing this, the White Knight Guild Master became even more anxious. She took a deep breath and punched again and again.
Bang! Bang!
Loud banging sounds of fists striking solid metal continued to echo.
But after each sound, there was nothing. Not even a single dent appeared on the knight’s pristine armor.
It became clear that the White Knight Guild Master’s physical attacks were not dealing any damage at all.
Noticing this, Lukas almost let out a breath of shock.
If her physical attacks were not doing anything, then his own would be no better — probably even worse.
At this point, Lukas had to take another look at the knight.
What exactly is this thing?
The one who was even more shocked was none other than the White Knight Guild Master herself. She had prided herself on her physical power. However, after defeating two opponents before, she was now unable to leave so much as a scratch on a mere tin can.
Just what in the world was going on?
Maybe she was too shocked, or maybe something else distracted her.
But the knight attacked. When she finally noticed the sword coming toward her face, it was already too late.
