Chapter 597: Dreams Of The Past

Unlike the others, who dreamed of interacting with Mika, she dreamed of watching him.

Her dreams were like viewing windows into moments that felt achingly real.

Mika as a baby, taking his first steps.

Mika as a toddler, speaking his first words.

Mika at three, at four, at five, every age and every stage, preserved in perfect detail.

Sometimes her dreams showed things that couldn’t possibly be real.

One night, Charlotte entered her second-eldest sister’s dream and found herself witnessing a battle of cataclysmic proportions.

The Eternal Queen, the greatest enemy the Battle Angels had ever faced was locked in combat with five familiar figures.

Charlotte recognized her mother and aunts immediately, though they looked different.

Younger. More fierce. Less worn by the years of peace that had followed their victory.

The battle was terrifying and beautiful and absolutely real in a way that dreams usually weren’t.

Every detail was precise. Every moment was vivid.

When Charlotte later described what she had seen to Yelena, her mother’s face went white with shock.

"How do you know about that?" Yelena demanded. "There’s no footage of that battle. No records. We never spoke of it to any of you children."

"How could you possibly—"

Charlotte fled before she had to answer.

Another night, she entered her sister’s dream and found herself in a strange facility.

It was clean and white and sterile, like a hospital but somehow different.

And there, walking through the corridors with a lab coat over her shoulders, was a woman Charlotte had never seen before but somehow recognized immediately.

Mika’s mother!

She was young—far younger than the portraits Mika kept in his room.

And surrounding her, following her like ducklings, were child versions of the Battle Angels themselves.

Tiny Yelena, clutching a wooden sword.

Little Nadia, already expressionless.

Young Fauna, already gentle-eyed.

The Maiden of War as a scrappy, fierce child.

And the Maiden of Fate, watching everything with those too-old eyes.

They treated Mika’s mother like an older sister. Like a mother.

Like someone they adored beyond measure!

When Charlotte told this to Nadia, Nadia immediately had a grave look on her face, like Charlotte had seen something she shouldn’t have.

"Where did you learn that, Charlotte?" She asked. "How do you know those details? Did you tell Mika anything? I hope you haven’t."

But once again, Charlotte just shyed away and didn’t answer.

She realized that her sister, the one all the sisters slightly feared seemed to have visions of the past, even though she didn’t exist at that time.

And it was probably due to her sister’s blessing—the ability to control time itself. Because of this, she was able to look through past events.

But Charlotte always avoided her dreams the most because of how strange they were.

She felt as if she was seeing something she shouldn’t.

Charlotte also traveled to the dreams of her mother and her aunts.

And shockingly, even though they occasionally had dreams of their nieces and daughters, the person they dreamed about the most was once again Mika!

And those dreams were even stronger than her own sisters’

In her own mother’s dreams, Yelena would absolutely cherish and spoil Mika.

She would pull his cheeks, give him kisses all over his face, hug him, pamper him, and treat him like an absolute doll.

"Come here, my precious boy!" Yelena would coo in her dream, pulling Mika into a tight embrace. "Let Mama love you!"

"M-Mama, please, this is embarrassing—"

Mika would call even though he never called her ’Mama’ in reality

"Embarrassing? What’s embarrassing about showing my baby boy how much I love him?"

"You’re squeezing me."

"Good. You deserve to be squeezed."

The reason, Charlotte realized, was simple.

In the real world, Mika didn’t allow this kind of attention.

He was too independent, too self-contained, too easily embarrassed by open displays of affection.

He would push the Battle Angels away when they tried to smother him and retreat to his books and his research.

So Yelena’s repressed maternal instincts had nowhere to go but her dreams.

’Does Mother love Mika more than me?’

Charlotte wondered, watching yet another dream of Mika being drowned in affection.

’She never dreams about me this much.’

She had asked the question once, directly, to Yelena’s face.

"Do you love Mika more than you love me?"

Yelena had choked on her tea.

"What? Charlotte, that’s—why would you—of course not! I love all of you equally!"

"Then why do you always dream about him and never about me?"

Yelena’s face had cycled through several colors before settling on a deep, embarrassed red.

"That’s—you shouldn’t—your blessing is not for spying on your family’s private thoughts!"

"So you admit you dream about him!"

"I admit nothing! Go to your room!"

Charlotte had gone, but she’d been smiling. She had her answer.

Nadia’s dreams were the most surprising of all.

The stoic maiden whose face betrayed no emotion in the waking world, became someone else entirely in her sleep.

In her dreams, she could smile. She could laugh. She could cry.

And she did all of these things with Mika.

Nadia would play with Mika in sun-drenched meadows, both of them laughing with pure, unrestrained joy.

She would comfort him when he was sad, her face soft with maternal tenderness.

She would hold him and rock him and sing to him, all the while wearing expressions that her waking self could never produce.

But only with Mika.

When her own daughter appeared in her dreams, Nadia’s face remained as expressionless as it was in reality.

When her sisters appeared, the same.

It was only Mika who could unlock the emotions that her blessing kept trapped inside.

’He’s the only one who truly understands her.’ Charlotte realized. ’Even in her dreams, he’s the only one who makes her feel like she belongs.’

Fauna’s dreams were Charlotte’s absolute favorite to visit!

They were the funnest, fluffiest, and most wholesome ones.

Especially the ones with Mika, which were a majority of them.

In one dream, Mika and Fauna were rock stars, playing at a concert to the rest of the world.

Fauna was on the drums, Mika on the guitar, and they were absolutely killing it.

"One, two, three, FOUR!" Fauna shouted, and the crowd went wild.

In another dream, they were at a circus act together.

Mika would be shot out of a cannon, and Fauna would catch him on the other side, both of them laughing as they performed acrobatics in the air.

In an even cuter dream, both of them became penguins, looking so fluffy and adorable that Charlotte had no choice but to go and play with them in the dream, waddling around in the snow.

’These are my favorite.’ Charlotte decided. ’I could watch these forever.’

The Maiden of War dreamed of battle. Of course she did.

Apocalyptic landscapes, monstrous enemies, impossible odds.

And through it all, she and Mika fought side by side—a mother-son duo taking on the world.

"Stay close to me, Mika!"

"I’m right behind you!"

"Good. Because I’m about to make a mess."

And she would. Bodies would fly. Buildings would crumble. It was a very violent dream, almost like some sort of action movie.

Sometimes Mika was a warrior, matching her blow for blow.

Sometimes he was a burden she had to protect, clinging to her back while she carved a path through their enemies.

And always, she would sacrifice herself for him in the end. Would throw herself in front of a killing blow. Would stay behind to hold off the enemy while he escaped. Would die so that he could live.

"Live for me, Mika." She would say, her body battered and broken, a smile on her face. "Live a happy life!"

And then she would die, and Mika would live on because of her sacrifice.

’She loves him so much.’ Charlotte thought, watching yet another heroic last stand. ’She would literally die for him. In every single dream.’

But the most disturbing dream of all, the one that made Charlotte question everything she thought she knew about her family involved the Maiden of Fate herself.

Charlotte had always been slightly afraid of her aunt.

The Maiden of Fate was the leader of the Battle Angels, the one whose gaze could pierce through any pretense and see the truth beneath.

Even Charlotte’s own mother deferred to her.

That’s why Charlotte had expected her aunt’s dreams to be similarly intimidating.

Cold. Rigid. Filled with cosmic calculations and visions of possible futures.

...She could not have been more wrong.

The first time she slipped into the Maiden of Fate’s dream, she found herself in a nursery.

A rocking chair sat in the corner and in that chair, cradling a tiny bundle to her chest, was the Maiden of Fate herself.

The bundle was a baby. A baby with dark hair and darker eyes, who looked up at her with an expression of absolute trust.

"There we go." The Maiden of Fate was murmuring, her voice softer than Charlotte had ever heard it. "Drink up, my precious boy. You need to grow big and strong."

And the baby was actually Mika who was greedily sucking on her swollen nipples!

Charlotte froze. She knew that dreams didn’t necessarily mean what they appeared to mean.

But still. This was her aunt. The most formidable woman in the multiverse.

And she was breastfeeding a baby Mika while cooing at him like he was her own child!

"Such a good boy!" The Maiden of Fate whispered. "Such a precious, precious boy. Mommy loves you so much! More than anything in the whole world!"

Charlotte retreated from the dream as quickly as she could.

But her curiosity and her inability to resist peeking at things she probably shouldn’t see drove her back.

Night after night, she visited her aunt’s dreams.

And night after night, she found scenes that grew increasingly...strange and even a bit taboo.
