Chapter 551: Maniacs
Moon turned towards Kael, "Cover me from range."
Kael nodded, his hands already heating with fire bolts.
Moon’s body flared with mana, purple lightning began to crackle across his two arms. Just ahead, four separate corpses were still on trajectories toward the largest surviving cluster of Evolvers. Alaric’s swords were engaged with a different section of the barrage. The archers below wouldn’t have angle in time.
Four bolts of purple lightning streaked into the corpses. Four explosions detonating in the air half-second later, the shock waves overlapping into a rolling wave of concussion that shook the arena floor.
The cluster of Evolvers survived.
Moon exhaled sharply.
Then the next wave of corpses lifted from further inside the venue, freshly killed elites floating up into the same lethal barrage.
Ace’s laughter drifted across the arena.
"Now this is fun! Let’s spice things up a little."
His thumb and middle finger came together slowly. The entire arena felt the momentary silence.
Moon watched Ace’s thumb press down against the pad of his middle finger. Sliding off, creating a soft yet disastrous snap.
BOOM!
BOOM!
BOOM!
The explosions came in overlapping waves.
Screams rose across the venue for the span of a single second, then died out almost instantly as the shock waves consumed the sound and everything else. Nearly every dark organization elite still fighting inside the arena exploded, their bodies detonating, destroying themselves and those around them.
Leaving nothing but ashes and destruction in their wake.
Moon’s face darkened. "He doesn’t care... he killed his own living subordinates. This was his plan from the start."
At this point, Moon had already concluded that Ace was not just a random member of the dark organisation. He was a vital piece of the highest caliber. His ability to control the lives of these peoples with a click of his fingers showed that.
The elites had been mobile bombs on a delay, given weapons and orders as a cover for the real objective.
Ace had let them run wild across the arena, engaging Alaric’s team and the competitors, right up until the moment their proximity became useful. The corpses were used as a distraction.
Everyone knew the surviving elites had bombs implanted inside them, but no one expected them to detonate in the middle of a fight. Few had imagined Ace would be this ruthless—or that his fighters would be this fanatically devoted.
Bodies still charging toward the surviving Evolvers exploded when they were in proximity. Others locked in melee took their opponents with them, the blast radius engulfing both attacker and target in the same ring of fire. A pair of elites who had cornered a mage against the collapsed western wall detonated so close to her that she vanished in the flash, leaving behind nothing to ever prove she existed.
Smoke and debris filled the arena. Chunks of pillar, shattered stone, twisted metal from broken stands became living weapons.
Very little flesh remained of the victims, burnt from the explosions.
The elites who had been running toward the retreating cluster of Evolvers didn’t slow down as their bodies started coming apart.
Some of them managed a final grin under their hoods before the blast consumed them. Others had no time to react at all, their faces frozen in mid-shout as the runes tore them from the inside.
The dust rose in a thick grey wall across the venue floor.
Moon coughed as the wave reached him. Kael staggered on the wall he was perched on, his fireballs flickering as he raised an arm against the flying debris.
Alaric hovered beside Moon in the air, his golden swords still circling him. He hadn’t moved to help the ground-level Evolvers who had been caught in the closer detonations. He couldn’t have reached them in time even if he had tried, Ace had played a smart yet ruthless game.
Across the arena, Ace lowered his hand.
His smile widened.
"As expected of you two...you really don’t make things simple."
♢♢♢♢
Away from the arena floor, at the far end of the venue where the collapsed western wall opened out toward the ruined skyline, five Ascenders were locked in a battle that no First Order being was meant to witness.
Ian and Farid clashed above the rubble.
Ian’s double-bladed spear was a work of art, slicing through the air in sweeping arcs, gracefully rotating between stances without losing momentum.
Farid answered with layered ribbons of blue flame that spiraled around his staff, deflecting the spear tips and forcing Ian to reset his rhythm with every exchange.
Neither of them was pulling their strikes.
Ian’s spear caught Farid across the ribs, tearing through his robe and drawing a line of crimson red blood.
Farid barely reacted to the injury, swinging his staff in response. A lance of concentrated blue fire punched into the side of Ian’s thigh, taking out a massive chunk of flesh, and incinerating it.
Ian laughed, ignoring the injury. "Getting slow in your old age, Farid?"
"I’ve been slower than you my whole life." Farid responded calmly.
"Because you’ve always been beneath me."
"Because I’ve never wasted energy on flashy moves."
Ian’s spear came up in a two-handed grip, both blades igniting with a dark violet glow. He drove forward in a lunging thrust that would have skewered a mountain.
Farid didn’t move.
His staff tapped the ground once, forming a wall of earth between them. Ian’s spear struck the wall and stopped dead, the tips embedding a hand’s width deep before the earth’s pressure held them in place.
Farid tilted his head slightly.
"You should try being quiet sometime. It might suit you."
Ian yanked his spear free with a snarl and came rushing again.
♢♢♢♢
"We are losing this battle..." Moon’s expression was incredibly sour. To win this battle, they needed a massive lead, something that would tip the balance into their favor.
His mind worked on overdrive, using everything he had learnt about the organisation from the moment he first met them, to Alaric’s information, to this very moment.
Moon’s mind connected the scattered dots, dot after dot, creating an image that, dare he say, was nothing short of terrifying.
His eyes glanced at the Five Ascenders fighting before turning towards Kael, activating a silencing rune around them.
Nobody could hear them speak, unless they triggered the eavesdropping alarm in the rune.
"Do you have a private connection to your father?" Moon covered his mouth.
Kael mimicked Moon, the two of them avoiding the enemies from reading their lips, "Yes."
"Good. Tell him this..."
