Chapter 424: Chapter 361: Want to Rest? Impossible.
"A meniscus tear?"
Inside Chen Yu’s office, Chen Yu picked up the scan and held it up against the bright window.
A very obvious second-degree tear on the lateral meniscus of the right knee.
Unfortunately, the tear was located almost entirely in the white zone.
"What did you people have the President doing? How did he tear his meniscus?" Chen Yu looked up at Warren, the President’s personal assistant, and asked in confusion.
’I haven’t seen any news about the President being attacked or anything.’
Warren was around the same age as Chen Yu. Dressed in a crisp suit with immaculately styled blond hair, he exuded the air of an elite Anglo-Saxon. He shrugged helplessly and said, "You know him. He still loves to run. He didn’t have time for a while, but now that the war is over, he’s had a bit more free time, so he’s started his night runs again."
"And unfortunately, it was pitch black, and he stepped in a pothole."
As he spoke, Warren’s tone was filled with helplessness and a deep urge to vent.
’Running is his life, I guess. He’d rather die than not run.’
Chen Yu glanced at the Special Service Bureau agent standing like a stone statue at the door.
The agent stared straight ahead, but his expression was a little strained.
"Are you sure about surgery?" Chen Yu asked, putting down the scan.
Warren nodded. "He’s in a lot of pain, and it’s already affecting his mobility. He has great confidence in you and believes you can solve his problem completely, so he’s decided on surgery."
"I can do that," Chen Yu interjected before Warren could finish. "The surgery isn’t difficult; a minimally invasive procedure will suffice. However, I strongly recommend we take this opportunity to also address his runner’s knee. We could perform a microfracture surgery to repair the cartilage at the same time."
His runner’s knee had always been treated conservatively.
Warren shook his head. "I’m afraid that’s not possible. The recovery period for that surgery is too long; he doesn’t have the time. And even for this procedure, we’d prefer to use local anesthesia. We can’t have him under general anesthesia, unconscious. Dr. Chen, do you understand what I’m saying?"
Chen Yu froze for a moment before it dawned on him.
’He was right. General anesthesia would be a huge problem.’
’Two hours under general anesthesia would require a temporary transfer of power.’
"Local anesthesia is no problem," Chen Yu readily agreed. But as he said this, an idea suddenly sparked in his mind.
"Here’s the thing. This is my clinic, and I’m more familiar with the environment here. Therefore, I want him to come to Phoenix for the surgery. I believe it’s the best option for him."
A sharp glint flashed in Warren’s eyes. He suddenly grew more guarded. After meeting Chen Yu’s gaze for a moment, he smiled and said, "Dr. Chen, the medical facilities in Washington are hardly lacking. And whatever surgical equipment you require, we can provide."
’Warren has already guessed my intentions,’ Chen Yu thought.
But since he had already brought it up, Chen Yu decided to press the issue. "I don’t think the location itself is the problem. But suppose I were to insist on performing the surgery in Phoenix? I’d ask you to please convey my position to the President."
Warren suddenly sighed. "Chen, I’d like to think we’re friends. Why does it have to be this way?"
Chen Yu smiled, thinking, ’It’s precisely because we’re friends that I have to do this.’
"Let’s leave it at that. I’ll wait to hear from you." Chen Yu said no more and put away the patient’s chart.
Warren nodded and rose to his feet. "Alright."
He didn’t press the matter further and left with the agent.
The next day, Ryan arrived in a hurry in Phoenix with a team in tow to tour Chen Yu’s cartilage regeneration project group.
"It’s certainly a promising line of research, and there are others in the field working on it." The medical consultant Ryan had brought along, a man named Jesse McIntosh, glanced at Chen Yu as he spoke.
’If I recall correctly,’ he thought, ’Professor Cunningham at Harvard Medical School is researching this very same area.’
’Chen Yu must have gotten the idea from him.’
"Of course, it has broad applications and a huge potential market, but it’s a very challenging research project," he added, his words still tactful.
’Otherwise, looking at Chen Yu’s Mickey Mouse operation, he felt like cussing someone out. Even if you’re going to scam investors, at least try to look the part!’
Ryan was a sharp operator; of course he understood McIntosh’s subtext.
Besides, he had evaluated numerous research teams. While Chen Yu’s wasn’t the absolute worst—the kind that tries to swindle you with nothing more than a PowerPoint presentation—it certainly wasn’t much better.
’But you have to consider who you’re dealing with.’
Ryan smiled slightly and said, "The project may be challenging, but I’m confident Dr. Chen can overcome this hurdle. Dr. Chen, do you think five million US dollars will be enough?"
’He was here to deliver money, plain and simple.’
’Ryan even suspected that Chen Yu had brought up the research project as just a tactful way of asking for a handout.’
’So if Chen Yu wanted it, he should just give it to him.’
McIntosh’s expression immediately stiffened.
’Not long ago, my own targeted-tumor lab struggled like hell to get two million in funding, and Eli Lilly hemmed and hawed the whole time. But this guy? With this shoddy operation? They just take a quick look and hand over five million?’
’Weren’t you people always telling me you were short on cash? I guess you’re not anymore, huh?’
Looking back at Chen Yu, McIntosh’s gaze was filled with resentment.
’We’re both doctors. What makes you so damn special?’
"Five million it is."
Chen Yu agreed with a nod, not giving it much thought.
’Five million, ten million... for a project with such an uncertain future, it didn’t make much of a difference.’
’If it failed, even a hundred million would be money down the drain. If it succeeded, pouring more money in would be a no-brainer.’
"Excellent. The funds should be in your account by tomorrow," Ryan said with a wide smile.
