As their caravan made its way through the forested landscapes and countryside, Hallen found a lull in the moment to engage Lassim in conversation.
The rhythmic clatter of the carriages against the road provided a soothing backdrop to Hallen leaning forward, getting Lassim’s attention.
"Young Master, have you ever delved into the lore of the Aetheria Kingdom? Are you familiar with it?" Hallen inquired, passing the time as he glanced at Lassim.
Lassim shook his head slightly, "Not really. My father and tutor at the Vanthar estate focused mostly on the Aurora Kingdom and its nobility. That way I’d be able to recognize the other noble’s crests and be aware of our alliances at the time. They always mentioned that I would learn about the surrounding kingdoms in due time."
Hallen nodded, understanding the gaps in Lassim’s knowledge. "Well then, allow me to enlighten you about the wonders of Aetheria," Hallen said with a smile, launching into an enthusiastic explanation.
"The Kingdom of Aetheria is one of the more wealthy nations of the Veridian Continent. Renowned for its skilled smiths, and the unique and revered profession of Geomancers they established," Hallen began, his voice carrying a sense of awe.
"These Geomancers are masters of earth shaping, specially trained and learned to be capable of growing special crystals at their command. They then enchant them with intricate arrays and magical engravings unlike anything you’ve seen before."
Lassim, interest piqued, replied, "Crystals enchanted with arrays and magical enhancements?" he echoed.
"Yes, indeed," Hallen confirmed. "They use them for all kinds of functions and are a crucial part of their architecture. It’s one of the countries I love the most due to their sense of style. I thoroughly enjoy every chance we get to travel to this country for me to learn more."
"But that’s not all. Aetherian cities hold a marvel that will astonish you when we arrive, Young Master! I won’t spoil the surprise just yet; it’s something you must witness firsthand. I promise you will nearly fall over in shock once you see it!"
"Oh really? Well, I can’t wait!" Lassim replied, eager to learn about this secret wonder.
Hallen then shifted the conversation to the royal family of Aetheria, whom they’d be meeting once they arrived in Etherys.
"Regarding our contract and reason for traveling to Etherys this time is thus. The Aetherian royal family is currently in the midst of a significant project," he explained. "They are constructing a new royal palace for a newly wedded princess who hails from the Kingdom of Harmony, a neighboring realm to our west. We are commissioned to assist in the castle’s designs and overall feel.
They’ve been tight lipped on the actual details, but we’ll learn more about the design they have in mind once we arrive."
Lassim listened intently, absorbing the new information. "A princess from the Kingodm of Harmony? That’s interesting, but I’m also not familiar with this kingdom as well." he remarked, his mind already pondering over the political situation.
"Yes, indeed. Aetheria in recent years has been attacking the border or at least encroaching upon it these last ten thousand years, and its been a bit of a back and forth. This marriage is a strategic move to strengthen ties between Aetheria and Harmony, and hopefully resolve some of this particular issue." Hallen elaborated.
"One thing that I think is important to understand, Young Master, is the Kingdom of Harmony is ruled by a long-standing Emperor, whom prioritizes societal balance above all else. Every aspect of his kingdom receives an equal budget and he governs with balance in the mind to the extreme.
There are rumors that it’s mainly due to his cultivation technique, but details on that is a closely guarded secret, known only to his inner circle. The current emperor is known to have a Day based element, but he tries to find a balance with night elemental strategies and influences into his style. It’s rather unique if I must say so."
Lassim furrowed his brow at Hallen’s explanation. "So the marriage will just solve the animosity between Aetheria and Harmony? Is it just that simple?" he inquired curiously.
Hallen nodded solemnly. "That’s the plan at least for this marriage alliance. Harmony hopes to foster peace and more collaboration. Harmony could also thoroughly use the connection to such a wealthier nation, so I’m sure that’s another non-official reason for the political move. Regarding our role there, we will set to work alongside the Aetherian smiths and geomancers in building the new palace.
It’s a pretty lucrative contract and will put our company’s name front and center at kingdom level politics once it’s finished."
Hallen leaned back in his seat, his gaze thoughtful as he considered the Young Master’s upcoming journey. "Young Master, with the border crossing just four days away and Etherys eleven days beyond that, have you thought about when you plan to part ways with the caravan?" he asked.
Lassim pondered for a moment, tapping his chin lightly. "I haven’t decided yet to be totally honest," he admitted. "I suppose I’ll have a better idea once we reach the border. There are still a few things I need to sort out before venturing on my own. I also don’t really know the route I need to take to get to the Southern Continent either."
Hallen nodded understandingly. "It’s wise to take your time and ensure everything is in order," he remarked. "I would suggest staying with the crew for at least the first few days after we arrive in Etherys. It will give you time to settle in, make any necessary purchases, and ask around for information on the path you’ll take."
"That sounds like a good plan," Lassim agreed. "I’ll also need to stock up on supplies and acquire a map of the region."
Hallen smiled reassuringly. "Leave that part to me," he offered. "I’ll make sure you get a map and help assist you in plotting a relatively safe route to the south."
Lassim’s eyes brightened. "Thank you, Hallen. I appreciate your guidance," he said sincerely.
"It’s my pleasure, Young Master," Hallen replied with a warm smile. "Once we have the route figured out, you can decide when it’s best to part ways from the group. Until then, rest assured that we’ll support you every step of the way!"
With a sense of gratitude and anticipation, Lassim was looking forward to the adventures that awaited him in the Kingdom of Aetheria and beyond.
Their conversation slowly died out and Lassim took the chance to delve back into his meditation, focusing on refining his cultivation and reaching Spirit Growth level 2.
The rhythmic rocking of the carriage lulled him into a deep state of concentration.
Images of his recent battles flashed through his mind as he reviewed each move and countermove, analyzing them as he pulled in more mana from the surroundings towards his mana pool in his heart world.
Moments stretched into minutes and beyond as the outside world faded into a distant hum as Lassim’s spiritual energy surged within him.
Surprisingly, he felt the familiar sensation of nearing a breakthrough. His senses heightened and attuned to the subtle flows of energy around him.
Suddenly, the carriage jolted to a stop, snapping Lassim out of his meditation before he could break through.
He blinked, readjusting to the present moment as he sent his spirit sense outwards and realized they had arrived at the line for the border crossing.
The carriages took turns slowly moving and repeatedly coming to a halt as they progressed the line as the guards processed their arrival at the border crossing.
Hallen turned to Lassim with a smile, tapping lightly on the carriage wall to get his attention. "Lassim, we’ve reached the border crossing into the Kingdom of Aetheria. Time to stretch those legs."
Lassim, still awakening from his meditation, nodded as he adjusted his posture. "Already? Feels like we just left Durelia Town."
Hallen chuckled. "Time flies when you’re deep in thought. Come, let’s see to the formalities."
Lassim then followed Hallen as he stepped out to converse with the unique looking border crossing guards that approached their caravan.
The guards, clad in unique armor, caught all of Lassim’s attention once outside. They were like crystalline warriors.
Their armor was crafted from sheets of metal beneath layers upon layers of opaque orange or dark red crystals.
Each guard’s armor was one solid color with the majority being orange crystal armored guards.
One guard at the front stood out the most with armor adorned in dark red crystals, exuding an aura of authority.
Above the shoulders of all of the guards, three small floating pillars made of crystals glowed softly. The dark red armor guard’s pillars seemed to add an intimidating yet mesmerizing aspect to their appearance.
Lassim’s curiosity went wild as he wondered about the technology behind these floating gems.
Hallen approached the border crossing guards, who stood vigilant, "Good day," Hallen greeted them with a respectful nod. "I’m Hallen, representing the Rohese Architecture Company. Here’s the roster of our personnel and equipment for inspection."
Meanwhile, Hallen efficiently handed over the caravan’s roster and equipment details to the Aetherian representatives. He had prepared this list to ensure a smooth passage through the border, a common practice when transitioning between kingdoms.
The guards inspected the documents with practiced precision, their demeanor professional yet vigilant for any issues.
The lead guard, adorned in his striking dark red crystals, accepted the documents with a nod of acknowledgment. "Thank you, Hallen. We’ll ensure everything is in order."
"Alright! Conduct the inspection! Grade 3-B cargo and individuals. Proceed with CW-2/78 protocol." He announced to the Orange crystals guards behind him.
As the guards scrutinized the caravan, Hallen engaged in casual conversation with the leader. "The line today is quite long. Busy day at the border?"
The guard nodded, his voice carrying a hint of pride. "Always, but especially so with the political visitors coming to congratulate the royal couple on their recent marriage. Only a select few were invited to attend the wedding, so we have quite a few well-wishers that still hope to show their kindness.
Our apologies for the additional wait, ensuring the safety and integrity of our kingdom is paramount."
Lassim marveled at the magical craftsmanship in the guards’ armor, admiring how cool he thought it looked.

Catching Lassim’s staring out of the corner of his eye, Hallen nodded in agreement before adding, "Indeed, security is crucial. Your armor is quite impressive. It looks like your team has received new upgrades since the last time I was here."
The guard’s expression softened into a proud smile. "Yes, crafted by our master smiths and infused with some unique strengthening enhancements. They really outdid themselves this time. Our higher ups explained that they wanted us to look more intimidating to the visiting kingdoms’ envoys, haha."
Lassim, intrigued, stepped forward to ask, "What are those floating pillars above your shoulders? They look fascinating."
The guard’s eyes sparkled with enthusiasm. "Ah, those are our symbols of honor and rank. They also channel the suit’s energies and enhance our senses during the patrols."
Lassim remarked, "It’s honestly amazing! I’ve never seen anything like it."
At that moment, one of the subordinates in orange armor came up and gave the all clear report to the leader.
"Alright, you’re clear to move forward." The red armored man shook hands with Hallen and Lassim.
Hallen, satisfied with the inspection, bid farewell to the guards. "Thank you for your diligence. We look forward to our journey through Aetheria."
The guard nodded, his tone respectful. "Safe travels, Hallen. May your time in Aetheria be guided by the crystals!"
The guard regiment gave a quick wave, saluted the caravan to move forward so they could service the next in line.
As they resumed their journey, Lassim couldn’t shake off the excitement after seeing his first example of the unique gem technology the Kingdom of Aetheria had. He was giddy to explore Etherys as soon as possible.
