Chapter 644: Office on the Lance
Jace stood in an office near the bridge that was not being utilized until now. He was looking out into space through a reinforced window that looked both towards the front and the port of the cruiser. His office was sparsely populated with a simple desk and computer and not much else aside from his personal effects. He will be sleeping in here for the foreseeable future as well but that was not as important at the moment.
What he did not expect was for Cho and Jordan to both be aboard as well. That was a last minute detail he did not really think about.
The space in front of the ship warped as the warp rider drive activated. He turned away from the window and sat at the desk as streams of blue light turned orange. Which was just the transition from warp activation to the warp rider drive activation.
At his desk he tapped a hologram puck and a hologram opened. He then manipulated it as he moved around information. It was the latest information package coming from MILD. Everything from politicians movements to the latest pirate locations. He needed to go over all of it to make sure none of Cerberus’ assets were being threatened.
Whoosh!
The door to his new office swooshed open and he looked up from what he was looking at. His eyebrows twitched as a slight frown graced his face. He swiped his hand through the hologram and made it disappear before his guest could memorize it.
"Aren’t you supposed to be in class?" Jace asked with a raised eyebrow. Cho was supposed to be in class at the moment. Not at his office. He knew because he looked up the information on the class and they were supposed to be watching the transition to warp. Apparently they were already studying such information.
It was honestly a bit high level to Jace considering Jace was still cleaning out gutters when he was their age. But according to Hielo it was a premium education that they were handing out for free. Especially since their unit had grown so large.
"I am. But the stuff she was talking about got boring. So I snuck away. Is this your new office?" Cho asked as she gingerly stepped into the room and looked around.
"It is." Jace frowned before making an observation as she moved into the room. "If you came here because you were bored you would have dragged along Jordan. Since you did not, that means you want to talk about something. So talk."
Cho puffed up her seats before plopping herself down in the chair on the opposite side of the desk. "Something is weird. I do not know why but I can sense in my being that the game has changed. I know you and others are doing something behind the scenes, but I do not understand how."
Jace smiled and nodded. "It is called foresight. Although it is probably called something different among others. It allows me to see into the future."
Cho frowned. Her mind processes this revelation. "That... can’t be possible. You are still in this dimensional plan. You can’t be in the future and past at the same time."
Jace nodded. "Yeah, it would probably mess with my mind quite a bit. But I have secluded part of my mind and am locking away the foresight ability with that part of the mind. All I receive from it is information so my mind is not stuck in multiple points of time."
Cho tilted her head. "I know that is incredible but I know that will also still get you in trouble. I do not know why."
Jace shrugged. "I know it will too. But that is for future me to handle... I think."
"Bwweeepp..." Cho made a noise with her mouth to show her discontent. Then she slapped her arms down on the arms of the chair. "Okay, I am going to stop bothering you and not stop you from doing boring human stuff."
"Hold up." Jace stopped her as she stood up. "You are going back to class. I am aware of your class schedule as well. So unless it is important you will not skip class again. Is that understood?"
Cho pouted before nodding as she moved to the door and walked out it. "Can we play games later?" She stopped at the door and asked.
Jace looked at the time. "You have class for a few more hours. I can play games with you and Jordan if you get permission to return." He informed her before nodding in agreement. As she walked out of his office he could feel the Lance transition into real space. He looked over his shoulder and looked out the window.
For a normal person it would just appear to be space with nearby asteroids being the only thing actually ’visible’. But Jace’s senses were enhanced. His eyesight being one such sense. So he could just barely make out the outline of large celestial bodies in the distance.
Beep! Beep!
A device on his wrist began beeping and he tapped it to answer. "This is Jace."
"Jace we are in the Oda System and have located the psychic blocking station. It is undefended. Do we just want to destroy it or do we want to power it down?" Shilla asked over the call. She was probably asking from the bridge.
"Destroy it. We do not want to leave it around to get powered up again." Jace declared. "Remember, we are going in stealth fully and destroying it with as little cannon fire as possible before leaving the system. Minimal presence, we do not want anyone to know we were here."
"Understood." Shilla answered and then the call cut off as the Lance started moving through space at a speed that was visible since celestial bodies began passing them by.
As he browsed the information from MILD he saw momentarily as they bypassed abandoned space facilities along with plenty of rubble. They did not even stop as a few explosive shells were fired from the portside artillery and destroyed the psychic blocking space station.
As soon as it was gone he could feel his connection to Salem reestablish itself. It was like a piece of the puzzle was reconnecting itself in his mind. He let out a sigh of relief as he could feel his mind connect to Salem’s.
He closed his eyes and found himself in his mind. He was sitting on the fictional porch and watched as a door appeared and then opened with Salem stepping through it. "Hey Jace," he walked through his mind and leaned up against the railing of the porch. "So I suppose you just destroyed the psychic blocker?"
"We did." Jace nodded. "Is it better now to use your abilities?"
"Yes, unfortunately so can the Xenar. I already felt them reaching out. But I can now confirm that Eduta is not involved with them. I can also tell who is and who is not on our side." She explained.
"Anything I should know?" Jace asked.
"I have plenty of spies among my ranks and I will check the Cerberus Unit once I am done here." Salem explained.
"Done?" Jace asked.
"Yes, we actually have been preparing for a counterattack for a while. We have been keeping it a secret from the Governing Council which is why I did not mention it to you. You have too much focus on yourself." Salem told him. "Now that you seemingly disappeared, I can tell you. Not to mention they already know that myself and several other Admirals and Generals have been preparing invasion forces for the last few months."
"You think they are trying to find fault or something else?" Jace asked, not really surprised.
"Yes, specifically a pro noble faction wants to withhold resources to cause casualties and blame us. Fenrir has already uncovered their plot. It is not going to go the way they believe. We are already working around them." Salem explained.
"Do you need help from me?" Jace asked.
"Nope." Salem shook her head. "We have it handled. But once we completely drive out the Mortella we will need a fool proof way to keep them out. Are you sure your idea will work?"
Jace raised an eyebrow. "You do not even know my plan." He rocked in the rocking chair he was sitting in. "At least I did not tell you. How do you know?"
"I am a telepath." Salem shrugged. "I read Taylor’s mind years ago. I have known about your plan for years. It is really smart. But I just do not understand how it is feasible."
"It involves gravity manipulating the edge of the galaxy. Doing so will prevent all types of travel into our galaxy. It will mean they will have to stop at specific areas at the edge of our galaxy in order to enter." Jace explained. "It is not exactly a shield but it uses some basic physics to prevent entrance to our galaxy. Nothing simpler, but it requires a complex method to cover the entire galaxy."
