Chapter 21: Chapter 21 Lu Yi Comes to Pick Up
Shen Heyu hurriedly declined, “No need, it’s not appropriate due to our social statuses…”
“What’s inappropriate about it? Back in college, we were already so close; to him, you’re just like me, his own little sister. That settles it, staying in a hotel isn’t safe. It’s pretty obvious those people were orchestrated by Bai Sheng’er. What if you go there and she sends them to come after you?”
Lu Yunlan hung up the phone after that, then sent a barrage of comforting messages, saying she had already contacted Lu Yi, and he would come to pick her up soon.
Looking at all her comforting words and the myriad of funny emoticons, Shen Heyu finally smiled.
There were still people willing to believe in her.
She didn’t have to wait long by the roadside, as Lu Yi quickly arrived. He drove up in the latest model Jaguar, thoughtfully loaded her suitcase into the trunk, and then drove her away.
...
The Lu family had their own businesses, but Lu Yi’s choice of pursuing a career in medicine was purely out of interest. His family was just as wealthy, and he lived in a villa community.
The villa had many rooms. Upon reaching the living room, Shen Heyu first surveyed the place with polite interest. The decoration of the villa was cozy, with matching hues of pink and blue, cool yet warm.
Lu Yi brought her suitcase in, and with a gentle smile said, “You stay here for now. There are plenty of rooms; pick any you like. The one at the end of the second floor is Yun Lan’s, you can stay there if you want.”
Feeling somewhat embarrassed by his friendly demeanor, Shen Heyu smiled, “Thank you, I’ll move out soon. I’ll find a place of my own, it’ll just be a matter of two or three days.”
“It’s okay, you can stay as long as you like. You and Yun Lan are just like little sisters to me.”
Lu Yi was very generous. After Shen Heyu chose her room, he helped her put her things inside. Then, checking the time, he speculated, “You probably haven’t eaten yet, have you? I haven’t eaten either. Tell me what you want to eat, and I’ll cook it.”

Shen Heyu then realized she was hungry. “Anything’s fine, I’m not picky.” After saying that, she added, “Thank you.”
“No need to thank me. That just makes it more formal.”
With a smile, Lu Yi restrained the urge to touch her soft, jet-black hair. Considering her past relationship with Pei Yansi, he managed to hold back.
He then turned and went into the kitchen.
Shen Heyu followed him and watched as he busied himself in the kitchen. Suddenly, she felt a bit dazed; it had been a while since she last saw Lu Yi after graduation, but to see that he was still as gentle and considerate warmed her heart.
He didn’t even press her for the reasons behind today’s events, giving her space and preserving her dignity.
Throughout her years of marriage to Pei Yansi, he had never once cooked for her.
After watching for a while, Shen Heyu felt it wasn’t right just to stand there, after all, it was not good to freeload. She stepped forward, close to him, and said, “Let me help too.”
Lu Yi laughed and didn’t refuse.
She helped take out the vegetables to wash, and as the water flowed from the tap, a few droplets accidentally splashed onto her face.
Seeing this, Lu Yi casually pulled out a paper towel and gently wiped them off for her.
His sudden proximity startled Shen Heyu, creating a slightly awkward atmosphere, and she hurriedly stepped back to put distance between them, pulling out a paper towel herself to wipe her face saying, “I can do it myself.”
Noticing she was keeping her distance, Lu Yi nodded with a smile and stepped back a bit further.
After dinner, Lu Yi had to go to the hospital. With him gone, the large villa was left to Shen Heyu to roam freely. She slept in the guest room all day, didn’t tell her grandmother about it, and certainly didn’t go back to the old house to avoid Pei Yansi finding out and causing her more trouble.
Night fell quickly, and Lu Yi was on the night shift with a surgery, not coming back till late.
Shen Heyu locked the guest bedroom’s door before going to bed.
Meanwhile, Pei Yansi was sleeping. Without consciousness, he turned over, his muscles instinctively reaching out beside him, but unlike usual, he didn’t embrace anything. All he felt was the icy chill, and he suddenly woke up.
In the darkness, he was disoriented for a few seconds. As he gazed at the empty spot beside him, he remembered that the woman had already left.
Restlessly at heart for no apparent reason, he turned on the bedside lamp, leaned against the headboard, and lit a cigarette to soothe his agitation.
He had barely taken two puffs when the master bedroom door opened.
Glancing sideways, he saw Bai Sheng’er clutching a pillow. She was wearing a white spaghetti strap nightgown, revealing her bare shoulders, and her pale, slender legs peeked out from beneath the dress. Her figure was delicate, but she was curvy in all the right places, a different type of beauty from Shen Heyu’s completely slender elegance.
One was the beauty of bones; the other, of flesh.
His eyes traveled up to her neck, but he glanced no further, withdrawing his gaze coldly. He stubbed out his cigarette and spoke in his usual gentle tone, “Why aren’t you sleeping?”
Bai Sheng’er, with red-rimmed eyes, edged closer to his bed and said in a soft voice, looking down, “I had a nightmare. I am scared… Can I… with you…”
“No.”
Pei Yansi cut her off, his voice cooling by half, “There are many lullaby stories online. Search for some and listen to them. Please leave.”
Disappointed, Bai Sheng’er gritted her teeth inwardly. She had deliberately worn a particularly alluring nightgown, its nearly transparent material revealing her well-formed figure in subtle ways.
But he didn’t show the slightest bit of passion, not even letting his gaze linger on her.
She could feel it; no matter how kind he was to her, he always refrained from touching her. There seemed to be an abyssal gap between them—a superficial closeness, but in reality, he had never opened his heart to her.
Pondering this, she heard his voice ring out again, “I said to leave.”
Bai Sheng’er perceived the underlying chill and dared not stay any longer, reluctantly turning around with her pillow in tow and leaving.
After she left, silence returned to the room, and Pei Yansi’s thoughts drifted back to Shen Heyu.
He had thought she would return to the ancestral home and expected a call from his grandmother questioning him, but there was none.
So she hadn’t gone back to the ancestral home.
Realizing this, Pei Yansi still reached for his phone, expertly dialing her number—a series of digits without a saved contact name or note, but he knew it well.
Shen Heyu, who hadn’t endured his torment, was sleeping soundly when her phone’s ringtone woke her. Too sleepy to look, she hung up directly.
Two seconds later, the ringing started again.
She cursed silently, just as impatiently ending the call without a glance.
But the caller was persistent, like a lunatic. Losing her patience, she picked it up and seeing it was Pei Yansi, her anger intensified. She had already moved out; what else did he want? Was he calling to let her listen to how wonderfully he was carrying on with someone else?!
She continued to hang up.
On the other end, Pei Yansi’s face darkened with each of the four or five consecutive hang-ups, his frustration growing. Why wasn’t she answering? It was late; she wasn’t back at the ancestral home. Did she have company? Was it inconvenient?
With that thought, he didn’t hesitate to keep calling. She hung up; he called back.
Finally, after countless attempts, the call didn’t go through.
He had been blocked.
