Chapter 231: A Need To Talk
For a moment, Catherine simply stared at him.
She was not offended or shocked by the desire behind the question. She understood there was something deeper hidden beneath it, as this was not the first time he had asked this.
Maximilian was not a reckless man. He was not someone ruled by impulse. Every significant choice he made was weighed, examined, and considered from every possible angle.
Which meant this wasn’t really about desire.
Or at least, not only about desire.
She studied his face and she could see the exhaustion, the tension... the lingering anger from earlier, and beneath all of it, something else.
Fear.
The realization struck her all at once. Dorian. She was not the only one affected by him.
Maximilian’s jaw tightened slightly as though confirming her thoughts.
Dorian had crossed a line today. He had approached Catherine directly, taken her right outside his doorstep, and separated her from everyone who could protect her.
And although she had returned safely, the message had been clear.
The next encounter might not end the same way.
Maximilian knew it. She knew it. Neither of them needed to say it aloud.
Catherine reached up and cupped his face between her hands. "I love you."
Her voice was barely above a whisper. Yet those three words seemed to quiet every fear that had followed them home that day.
The fear of Dorian. The uncertainty of what came next. The possibility that tomorrow might bring another battle.
In the end, none of that mattered in this moment. What mattered was this.
Him.
Them.
Maximilian closed his eyes briefly, leaning into her touch as though he had needed those words more than she realized.
"I love you too, Catherine," he said.
Then he kissed her.
The kiss began softly, carrying all the tenderness that had always existed between them, but it quickly deepened into something more. Catherine felt the tension he had been carrying all day finally unravel. The panic he had hidden behind calm strategies and measured plans seemed to dissolve each time their lips met.
She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back.
Neither wanted to let go; not after the thought of losing one another had come so painfully close.
Maximilian’s hand slid to her waist, drawing her nearer until there was scarcely any space left between them. The familiar warmth of him surrounded her, steady and reassuring, and Catherine found herself melting into his embrace.
Without breaking the kiss, he lifted her into his arms.
A surprised laugh escaped her.
For the first time that evening, she saw a glimpse of the man beneath the strategist and professor. The man who simply loved her.
He carried her to his room.
The journey to the bedroom felt dreamlike, filled with quiet smiles, stolen kisses, and lingering touches. Every movement seemed unhurried, as though neither of them wished to rush through the moment.
When they reached the bed, Maximilian paused.
The room was dimly lit, bathed in the soft glow of the bedside lamp. Outside, the city continued its endless motion, but inside those walls, the world felt wonderfully distant.
He brushed a strand of hair from her face. Then kissed her forehead, and then her temple... The corner of her eye.
Each touch felt deliberate and reverent, as though he was reminding himself she was truly here.
Safe. With him.
Catherine felt her heart ache at the tenderness of it.
His gaze searched hers, always checking, always making sure she was comfortable as the passion intensified. To see if she wanted this, that she was certain.
And Catherine realized that was one of the reasons she trusted him so completely.
Even now, when emotions were running high, he was paying attention to her rather than himself.
She smiled softly and reached for him. The affection in her eyes was answer enough.
Maximilian rested his forehead against hers and released a slow breath as he teased her further.
For a few moments, neither spoke.
They simply remained there together, wrapped in the quiet intimacy that came from being fully known and fully loved.
Then, as the moment deepened and the distance between them disappeared entirely, as he was about to enter her... Maximilian felt it... a slightest hesitation, so small that another man might have missed it.
There was a subtle tension in her posture, a fleeting uncertainty she had not voiced aloud.
Immediately, his attention sharpened. Yes, he was disappointed. Yes, he wanted this to be the day they became one. And still, he stopped because Catherine mattered more to him than the moment ever could.
He gently lifted his head and searched her face. And in that instant, everything else faded away. There was only her.
"Are you scared?"
The question was asked so gently that Catherine almost didn’t recognize it for what it was.
She lay beneath him, wrapped in warmth and familiarity, with Maximilian’s arm around her and his hand resting at the crown of her head. His fingers moved slowly through her hair, soothing rather than demanding, and his voice carried nothing but concern.
Yet beneath that concern, she caught something else. A quiet realization. Perhaps even disappointment. It was not directed at her, but was directed at himself, as though he had finally put a name to something he had been wondering about for a long time.
Maximilian had never doubted her feelings.
He knew she loved him. He knew she wanted him. There had never been uncertainty about that.
He saw it in the way she looked at him when she thought he wasn’t paying attention. He felt it in the way she reached for him, the way she melted into his embrace after a difficult day, the way she sought his presence even when neither of them spoke a word.
There was no hesitation in her love.
Only in this. Only when they reached this particular threshold.
And for the first time, he was no longer willing to pretend he hadn’t noticed. This wasn’t something to overcome by ignoring it. It needed to be understood.
Which was why he held her a little closer before asking.
"Are you scared to do it, Catherine?"
Immediately, she stiffened.
Maximilian almost smiled, not because he found it amusing, but because the reaction itself answered part of the question.
And, exactly as he expected, Catherine became defensive.
"Why would I be scared?" she demanded. The response came too quickly and sharply. "I love you."
She pushed lightly against his shoulder as though trying to create distance between them.
"I’m not lying when I say I trust you."
The words carried frustration. And beneath the frustration was something far more fragile.
Maximilian didn’t move away. He didn’t argue. He didn’t point out the contradiction.
Instead, he remained exactly where he was, surrounding her with steady warmth and quiet patience.
He kissed her forehead. Then her temple. Then her cheek and lips. Each gesture carried the same message.
I’m listening.
I’m not judging you.
You’re safe.
Gradually, the tension left her shoulders. When he finally looked at her, his blue eyes were impossibly gentle.
"I know you love me."
The certainty in his voice made her chest ache.
"And Catherine..." His hand brushed a strand of hair from her face. "You can trust me and still be scared to do it."
The words struck her harder than any accusation could have.
For a moment, she couldn’t speak. She couldn’t even look away.
Because he was right.
The truth had been sitting inside her for so long that she had stopped examining it.
She loved him. She trusted him and wanted a future with him. All of those things were true. And yet there was still a part of her that became anxious whenever things reached this point.
A part she had never fully understood. A part she had never wanted to acknowledge.
Her fingers curled against his shoulder.
How did he always see through her?
How did he notice the things she barely admitted to herself? What made the realization almost unbearable was that he hadn’t needed to stop.
He could have ignored the hesitation. He could have assumed it would pass. He could have prioritized his own desires and she wouldn’t even have blamed him.
Instead, he had paused the moment he sensed something was wrong, simply because he cared, because her comfort mattered to him and because her feelings mattered to him.
The realization cracked something open inside her.
Suddenly, tears filled her eyes.
One escaped before she could stop it.
Then another.
Maximilian’s expression immediately softened.
"Catherine..."
She shook her head, unable to explain.
How could she put it into words?
How could she explain what it felt like to be loved so carefully?
To have someone notice her fears without condemning them?
To have someone choose patience when they had every reason to be frustrated?
The tears rolled freely now.
And for the first time since he had asked the question, Catherine stopped trying to defend herself.
Instead, she buried her face against his chest and let herself be held.
