Chapter 182: _Good Old Paranoia
Ambrose’s eyes batted open slowly. He’d woken up from a weird nightmare where he saw the Void Entity hovering in the clouds while the screams of thousands of people stacked up around it.
He sat up, placing a palm on his sweaty face. "What a night..." he mumbled, glancing back at the morning sunlight spilling out of his window.
Just when he reached beside himself for Devon and Viktor—he noticed something. They weren’t in bed. Frowning, he swerved his head to the bedroom door, sweeping through the suite with spatial awareness.
It didn’t take long to gather a mental picture.
Viktor was at the kitchen island drinking something out of a glass cup that he hoped to hell wasn’t alcohol. Devon was squatting on the living room floor, adjusting Orion’s collar.
He could feel almost everything from here... even up to the smiles on their faces. His fingers relaxed on the bed sheets.
"Domestic..." he sighed, hopping out of the bed slowly.
The moment his feet touched the cold marble floor, however, he got this odd twist in his stomach. The same feeling he got when he thought something bad was about to happen.
[Ah, yes. Good old paranoia.]
’You better not add to it with some crazy daily quest today.’ he finally willed himself to rise off the bed, stretching out his limbs with an exhausted grunt. ’I need a long bath. Amongst other things.’
[Don’t forget doctor Kelly. You still need to check if she has any files on Orion’s hybrid anomaly nature.]
’Ugh, right.’ he rubbed his forehead. ’At this point, why don’t I just confess to Devon about that? I mean, he’s seen the kid use powers he can’t explain that one time against Cecil.’
[Explaining to him that the anomaly just appeared in front of your door one day was so easy to take because you had no control over that.]
[But telling him about the child being a hybrid? That’ll open a lot of cans of worms. For example: how did you get to know? Which would naturally—]
’Reveal that I have a homicidal system in my head.’ Ambrose rolled his eyes. ’I get it. It was only a thought.’
He spun in the direction of his bathroom to take a shower when spatial awareness tugged at his senses hard. He snapped his neck to the bedroom door.
Someone was approaching the suite’s entrance.
In the living room, Devon tucked a stray strand of Orion’s golden hair behind his ear. "Remember what I told you? Sometimes the fastest way to make friends—"
"Is to join the conversations the other children make." Orion nodded with a look that spelt ’I know’. "Thank you, papa."
"If you ever have any problems, let me know first, okay? Your daddy and I will deal with it."
Viktor lounged lazily behind the kitchen counter, watching this scene with the last parfait glass in the fridge. He held back the urge to say something snarky... although he genuinely found it adorable.
Who would’ve thought Devon Ferguson was capable of such fatherly qualities?
"Alright," Devon sprang to his feet. "Let’s get you to school. Would you want to see daddy before we—"
A knock sounded at the door just then. All three of them swivelled their heads in unison.
"Huh." Viktor arched his brow. "Should we get that or...?"
Like a summoning spell, the door to Ambrose’s bedroom swung open. The Guide rushed out with nothing but his underwear and the short-sleeved black shirt he had worn the night before.
"Good morning, daddy." Orion greeted, and Ambrose responded with a wave.
"Morning, buddy." His eyes slid to Devon and Viktor. "Have you guys checked the door yet?"
"No." Devon narrowed his eyes. "Did you just wake up? How come you—and he’s heading to the door himself."
Ambrose got in front of the door and opened it without hesitation, putting on the brightest smile he could conjure on such short notice.
He wasn’t all too familiar with the person behind the door. But he’d heard enough discourse, especially that gotten from the past Ambrose’s memories, to know whomever he was... meant trouble.
"Guide Ambrose." A deep baritone was what welcomed him first. Then he took in the man behind it.
He was an average-built Hunter donned in a black uniform with the Guild’s symbol. His head was filled with dark brown curls and his eyes were so sharp they could cut.
One of the Guild’s only S-Ranks—Hunter Augustus. The man tilted his head calmly, scrutinising Ambrose in a way that made him feel small despite the height difference.
Not only was he an S-Rank but he was also the head of the Guild’s disciplinary team. So yeah... trouble.
"Good morning, Hunter Augustus." Ambrose kept his smile. "I hope there isn’t a... problem."
"There is actually." Augustus didn’t waste a breath. "The Guild master wishes to see you in his office immediately."
Ambrose’s heart skipped a beat.
Not just any random Guild higher up... but THE Guild Master? What the fuck was with SS-Ranks wanting a piece of him recently? And not in a fun way either.
"The Guild master?" Devon echoed inside the suite, keeping Orion close to his side. "Why?"
"Something important." Augustus remained vague.
"... I’m following him."
"I’ll advise against that, Hunter Devon." Augustus deadpanned. "Your grandfather insists the Guide comes alone."
Devon’s fingers tightened around Orion’s. ’What the hell could Rose have done to get a summons from the old man?’
"It’s... It’s fine," Ambrose gave an understanding nod. "Just let me go get changed into something presentable and I’ll be out right away."
"Three minutes." Augustus didn’t flinch, turning away from the door as the Guide shut it.
The second the door was closed, Ambrose’s practised smile fell into a scowl. "That can’t be good."
"You think?" Devon had the biggest frown in the room as he and Viktor waltzed to him. "What could that possibly be about, Rose?"
"I’m as clueless as the next person." Ambrose shrugged, brushing past them as he went for his bedroom again. "I guess there’s only one way to find out..."
Although he sounded almost carefree about it, his heart hammered behind his ribs with each step he took.
Orion tugged Devon’s sleeve softly. "Papa..."
Devon lowered his head. "Hm?"
The little boy stared at the closed suite door. "Why does it feel like daddy’s in trouble?"
