Chapter 3: Sensitive
Kalon squeezed himself under the bed as fast as his weak body would allow.
Dust tickled his nose, and his glasses nearly slipped off his face.
The space was cramped, barely enough room for his underdeveloped frame.
He held his breath. His heart was pounding so loudly!

Josinia smoothed down her maid uniform quickly and opened the door just a crack.
"Yes, I’m here. I was just... tidying up after my break. Is the Princess in a hurry?"
A sharper, more authoritative female voice replied from the hallway.
"She is always in a hurry when it comes to important matters. Hurry along, Josinia. She wants her favourite attendant by her side for the evening observation."
Kalon caught a glimpse of polished boots and the edge of a dark uniform from his hiding spot.
The other woman sounded impatient.
Josinia hesitated for a moment.
"Of course. I’ll be right there."
The door clicked shut again.
Kalon let out a shaky breath but didn’t dare move yet.
He heard Josinia’s footsteps hurry back toward the bed.
"You can come out," she whispered urgently. "But stay quiet. I have to go serve the Princess now. If anyone finds you here..."
She didn’t finish the sentence. Instead, she crouched down and looked under the bed.
Their eyes met. Her purple cheeks had a faint darker tint to them.

He crawled out from under the bed, brushing dust off his academy uniform.
The servant’s room felt even smaller now that he was alone.
He walked over to the window and stared out at Venduros’s night sky. The orange planet’s atmosphere swirled slowly. He could still see Earth in the distance.
So close... yet so far.
Kalon sat back down on the edge of the bed and pulled up his status again out of habit.

Kalon groaned quietly.
"Great. No pressure or anything... it’s not like my body’s not already fucked up enough."
He spent the next while pacing the small room, eating a few pieces of the sweet, glowing fruit Josinia left behind.
It tasted like strawberries mixed with honey.
His mind raced between memories of Richard and Ruby laughing at him back at the university and the way Josinia had smiled at him.
No one’s ever called me cute before. Why can’t women like Thea see me this way?

Time passed strangely. It felt like hours, but when he checked the System, only forty minutes had gone by in Venduros time.
Finally, the door opened again. Josinia slipped inside, breathing a little fast. She locked the door behind her and leaned against it, her white curls slightly messy now.
"The Princess is distracted with the star charts tonight. We should have a little time."
She looked at Kalon with a mix of nervousness and curiosity.
"You’re really here. A real human. Tell me more about your planet. Is it true your health is capped at 1000?"
Kalon scratched the back of his head, feeling awkward but strangely excited.
"Yeah. No humans have gone past 1000 health yet, but we have high potential with Mana... Just not me."
He laughed bitterly without meaning to. The words just slipped out.
Josinia tilted her head slightly, wondering what he meant.
So he explained.
"Back home, they pull my pants down in class for laughs. Call me names. I’m basically invisible except when they need someone to bully."
Josinia’s eyes widened. She stepped closer and gently touched his arm.
"That’s horrible..." Her voice was soft. "Why are humans so mean to you? Aren’t they your allies?"
