Chapter 75: Chapter 75: Only Two Days?

After a short break to eat, Faye Yardley stood up and said, "I’m going into the academic building to walk it off."

As she spoke, she tossed a clementine to Yvonne Lynch.

Huh? Walk it off?

Yvonne Lynch caught the clementine tossed to her, a confused look on her face. ’Should I follow her or wait here?’

Before long, she heard the increasingly loud roars of zombies and the sounds of fighting once again.

Then, she saw dismembered zombie limbs falling from the windows one after another.

"Can I become that strong too?"

After clearing a floor of zombies, Faye Yardley would sit on the hallway railing for a short break. She would do a quick review, thinking about what she could have done better to kill faster and with less effort.

She would peel a clementine and hold the peel under her nose, taking a deep sniff to keep her sense of smell from going numb.

After finishing the clementine, Faye Yardley hopped off the railing and walked toward the stairs.

The academic buildings were connected by walkways. You could go directly from Academic Building 3 to Building 1, which, along with the faculty office building, formed a somewhat irregular, quad-like structure.

However, Faye Yardley’s plan was to clear Building 3, then take the walkway to Building 1. From there, she would fight her way from the fourth floor of Building 1 down to the second, cross over to the faculty office building, and finally sweep through Building 2.

Killing and resting, resting and killing, time passed bit by bit.

By the time night fell, she couldn’t find a single zombie left in the academic buildings.

But the system still hadn’t notified her that all the zombies were eliminated, so there were definitely some stragglers.

Faye Yardley couldn’t help but wonder: did Yvonne Lynch count as a zombie?

’If I sweep every nook and cranny of the school tomorrow and still haven’t killed them all, should I get rid of Yvonne Lynch?’

The moment this thought crossed Faye’s mind, a chill ran down Yvonne Lynch’s spine. She spoke weakly, "Big Sis..."

The two of them were on the roof of the office building. At five stories, it was the highest point in the entire Dungeon.

Night had fallen. Faye Yardley took a Fire Pit from her backpack, then tossed Yvonne a bottle of mineral water and two large meat buns. She then began to eat quietly herself.

After finishing her bun, Faye Yardley looked up and asked, "How long were you hiding in there?"

"Huh?" Yvonne Lynch thought for a moment. "Maybe two days?"

’???’

’Only two days?’

’That sounds so unbelievable.’

Faye Yardley just said "Oh," then asked, "Would you mind telling me why this place ended up like this?"

"I don’t really know. It was two days ago. I came to school for class like normal, and during the break, my classmates went downstairs to relax. Suddenly, they all fainted. When they got back up, their bodies were stiff, and they started chasing and biting each other. They would swarm any students or teachers who hadn’t changed."

"The school was in chaos. Someone pushed me as I was running for the exit, but when I got to the gate, I saw those slow-moving, biting... monsters were everywhere outside, too. One of my classmates pulled me into the security office, and the guard told us to hide in the small breakroom inside..."

Yvonne Lynch tapped her head as she spoke, trailing off. She couldn’t remember how she’d ended up hiding in the cabinet, nor did she know how she knew she could heal wounds. What had she forgotten?

’Hasn’t it only been two days?’

’How can I not remember? My memory used to be so good.’

Seeing Yvonne’s distressed expression as she struggled to remember what happened next, Faye Yardley didn’t press her. Instead, she said, "Perhaps the zombie virus awakened your superpower, but it also affected your memory. Don’t worry about it too much."

"Really? So all the teachers and students turned into zombies? No, that can’t be right. There were definitely others who hid with me or escaped."

Faye Yardley’s expression remained indifferent. "Maybe they found a chance to escape while you were hiding. The window of opportunity was too brief, so they didn’t have time to call for you."

Hearing this, the color returned to Yvonne Lynch’s face. "You’re right. If they really could have afforded to be even a second slower, they would have called for me. It’s only been two days, but the school has changed so much. Without anyone cleaning, the chairs are already getting dusty."

Faye Yardley grunted in acknowledgment. "Are you still hungry? You probably haven’t eaten properly in two days."

"I’m not hungry. I wasn’t really hungry after eating the bread you gave me earlier," Yvonne Lynch said, a little embarrassed. "I was just being greedy just now, that’s why I ate both buns you gave me."

"You’re at a growing age. Having a good appetite is a blessing."

Faye Yardley offered two comforting reasons at once.

Inwardly, her thoughts were in turmoil, but her expression remained placid.

She hadn’t even been in this world for half a month, but she felt she had already changed so much.

’The old me would never have been able to listen so calmly to someone telling such a story full of holes.’

She knew that Yvonne Lynch appearing in the Dungeon as a living person was highly unusual. After all, the system had even given a prompt when she met her.

Finding the truth was the mission for Dungeon 3, but it seemed she could continue making progress on it here.

Unless this place was a complete world in itself—one where, for some reason, humans had turned into zombies, leaving very few survivors. And then this world, too, was invaded by the system from The Survival World, which presented itself as a game.

Just like the world in that book she had read.

The book just never explained why the male lead’s world had been invaded by The Survival World.

Perhaps it had also been facing the immense crisis of impending human extinction.

’If I think about it that way, the appearance of this survival game actually preserved humanity.’

’Didn’t the system save my life, too?’

Outside, it was now pitch-black without a sliver of light. Faye Yardley tossed a piece of charcoal into the Fire Pit.

"Are you sure you don’t have a Space Ability, Big Sis?"

"Mm, I don’t." Faye Yardley looked at Yvonne Lynch and said, "If everything is normal tomorrow, I’ll tell you when I get the chance."

’The male lead was able to take her out of the Dungeon, which means I should be able to as well.’

’I just don’t know what I’ll need to do.’

"Oh, okay."

Yvonne Lynch looked at her pitifully. Faye Yardley stood up from her chair, dragged the desk closest to the entrance into the corner between the door and the wall, blocking the door and bracing it against the wall.

Quite satisfied, she lay down right on top of it, then closed her eyes and said, "Zombies probably won’t be able to climb up to the fifth floor for now. You can pick a desk and lie down, too."

Although Faye Yardley closed her eyes, she was not completely unguarded. She worried: what if she actually fell into a deep sleep and Yvonne Lynch decided to slaughter her in the middle of the night?

That was why she had chosen a spot by the door and against the wall—to put as much distance as possible between herself and Yvonne Lynch. If Yvonne made any strange moves, Faye would have enough time to react.

Yvonne Lynch simply sat by the Fire Pit, hugging her knees. Her gaze shifted back and forth between the flames and Faye Yardley.
